World War II in the Pacific

I know about this, but I think you might be missing my point. "The attack was planned many days or even weeks ago." The Japanese deceived the American government into believing that peace might still be possible, but wanted to announce war only 30 minutes before the bombing would commence. It went wrong ultimately, but either way it was still treachery.

It wasn't as though it was clear (except maybe to a few diplomatic officials) that all alternatives were exhausted, and that it was only a matter of time. For example, it wasn't like the run-up to the 2003 Iraq War where George Bush finally said, "It will come at a time and place of our choosing." Of course, that's not a declared war... :crazyeye:

I think the idea is that traditionally, one declares war first and then invades... 30 minutes is so short a time you might as well not even bother. Surprise is fair game in war, so there was really no point in a DOW. The only reason they did it is so they could say "Hey! We followed the Geneva Convention," when it was moot.

Anyway, let's not derail the thread with history discussions.

This scenario/mod looks very interesting.
Once downloaded, where do you put it? Clearly I have done something wrong as I start in 7195AD?

Never mind...I realized my error!
I put it in My Games/etc...
It appears to have to go via the Firaxis route of MODS.

Sorry for the bother!
* Note to self...download and play more scenarios so as not to appear too Noob-ish

Gonna have to try it again. :goodjob: I actually never got around to finishing ie before, life got in the way.. :grr

(...) Here is an updated Python events code which fixes a minor problem on the first turn. Just put it in the Assets\Python subfolder of the mod directory.

What problem does it fix?

Obviously it didn't fix the problem I described with Manilla reverting back to US control on Turn #2, after it had been captured by the Japs. That new .py file wasn't intended to fix that, I'm assuming -- do you plan on releasing another modified .py file that does fix this event? Thanks!

I downloaded the scenario and the patch and started the game. It says "You have been defeated!" and the game ends. Every time. Any ideas?

My guess is you probably didn't save the scenario folder in the right place. It should be in the program files folder of your hard drive (not in My Saves) -- Firaxis/SidMeyerCIV4/Warlords/Mods... Once installed, go into the scenario's public map subfolder and double-click the file in that folder. It should launch your scenario directly.

It should work now. Play it again, Sam...

It does. It's also way harder now to run Japs.

Don't look here if you haven't played the game:
Spoiler :
There's a bazillion US subs showing up after the attack in Pearl -- too many I think. The reinforcements that come into Pearl -- I forgot how many P38's and other troops -- seem to dispell any realistic prospects of invading Pearl.

The attack on Pearl itself seems to be an entire waste of time since, as you pointed out, CIV4 does not allow sinking/damaging ships in a port. Since no Japanese landing troops are available nearby either, why bother attacking Pearl at all? No Python coding can help with this limitation??

Well, I believe you can bomb Pearl Harbor's air defenses with the carrier force. I seem to recall that planes in a city can be bombed, but not ships. You could also decide to move on to Hilo, or back toward Midway and think about an invasion there.

My advice is to get the heck out of Pearl Harbor as quickly as possible before the planes from the mainland and from the U.S. carriers arrive. Just like in real life, submarines were out looking for the Japs... which is one reason why they couldn't stick around. :D

You could stand and fight, of course, as the subs ultimately don't stand a chance against your superior naval power, however you will take heavy damage in the process (and the U.S. will lose just about every sub.) :D

I don't know how to make it so you can sink ships in port yet. (If anyone else does, I'd be happy to know...) Hopefully in BtS this will be fixed. The way it's set up right now the game technically starts just after the raid on Pearl Harbor, and the battleships that are left are down to virtually zero strength.

That's what I ended up doing. Taking both Midway and the other US outpost is fairly easy and it gives a better chance for the Japanese fleet to lick its wounds before heading for the Aleutians.

Yup -- same conclusion... Eventually, all these US subs, all 15-20 of 'em, for whatever reason flocked around Tarawa where I happened to have a few ships and a Zero. It was like shooting fish in barrel. Plus the AI was sending unescorted carriers to sail by Tarawa, heading in the general direction of Japan... Maybe they were on a mission. They didn't survive. :sniper:

Greetings, please excuse me if this topic has been posted, but is this for vanilla CIV 4 or CIV 4 Warlords?

I have not switched to Warlords out of fear of losing the ability to play JLocke's TCW: Small, fast & Beautiful.

I must admit, I am salivating over the idea of going home and recreating "Victory at Sea".

@ The Navy Seal:
Paratroopers are not in yet, unfortunately. :( That is why several techs are less-than-filled right now. Expect them after July 23. ;)

@Koba the Dread:
It is for Warlords.

This isn't something you have to worry about. Once you install warlords you can still play plain old Civ 4, and all the mods for it.

Dear Hell Hawk,

It is my understanding that there will be some code issues when switching from vanilla to Warlords; much like when trying to play a scenario that was created before a patch update.

Did that make sense?

Nonetheless, I want to believe your recommendation and then be able to play this scenario. I'll be sure to let you know how this pans out.

Have a pleasant day/evening.
