Babylon : I guess I like Mesopotamian war themes ! The Babylon war theme is very recognizable and distinctive, and I enjoy it a lot.

Morocco : It's appropriate for Morocco, but not appropriate for war. It's also pretty anoying with the voices.

+ Same as the peace theme, Arabia's war music is unique, as it changes constantly and thus avoids becoming dull as several other pieces. It starts very slowly, like some general regretting what he has to do, but in the middle, the mood changes and the Arabian troops march against their enemies!

- I can appreciate dissonance in music, but this tune goes too far. In the beginning is a mix of several screechings and chaos, that suddenly loses its way and ends up nowhere.

+ A very varied piece: starts with a lot of drama, goes on with some impressive pizzicato strings that seems to show the tragedy of war, and the final part is almost optimistic, signaling the Aztec victory. Really, listen to it once more, you'd be surprised how underestimated it has been! :)

- Boudicca's theme wouldn't be if it was just another Europan war track, but, as a celt music, sounds rather generic. I wasn't expecting any New Age-ish tune, but the only celtic influence seems to be the ulliean pipes -which are pretty subtle, by the way.

I've had a few more listens to England's war theme. It's terrible. Way too many seemingly arbitrary changes in style at inopportune points, sounds nothing at all like its base, and parts seem horribly anticlimactic, like the instruments were building up to a crescendo that wasn't there. Overall, a messy hodgepodge of sort-of-English-militia-type stuff that doesn't get off the ground at any point. It's a shame, because I actually like what they were apparently going for, in a light, almost folksy theme, avoiding the omnipotent sweep-you-off-your-feet majesty of America or Assyria, but it keeps sliding into that somehow.

Compare this with Shoshone, which I think is actually the best piece of music in the game. It's colorful, it has a dramatic but well-integrated and engaging change in style at a clear point halfway through, and there's no sense of anticlimax when it hits the quieter pipe solo - instead, it starts a new ground from which to build up a really striking instrumental mix, with the climb-down at the end rounding it off perfectly.

In both of the pieces there's a sense of flavor, of some mystical idea of what a war with the civilization 'should' sound like, but whereas with the Shoshone this sense increases the drama of the war and provides a real feeling of majesty (without the menace of e.g. Washington or Montezuma's themes, which I feel fall a bit flat), the English theme seems entirely built around this fuzzy concept, which is not the way I think a piece of music should be done, unless you're writing it for Shaka, because, hey, it's Shaka, you can ham it up however you like.

+ I won't sleep well if England's theme goes below 20, but I just couldn't help but notice that Persia's hymn is ranking too low. Why is that? Not every single war theme has to be bombastic. Darius' theme reflects the anger and sorrow in a slow but beautiful way.

- Oh, Venice, Venice... why are your themes so unimpressive? They lack personality and end up sounding like a standard Hollywood score. Please, go away and never return.
