What the hell?

I've beaten quite a few deity games at this point... but I've never seen this happen. What's wrong with Eli?

EDIT: Some people can see the image but some, including me, can't(using firefox). I can see other people's uploaded images though.
For those who can't see, it's an image of Elizabeth being 'afraid' even though we just met and all I have is 1 warrior and waaay behind in score on one of my failed cultural OCC attempt.

I believe the afraid status is based on your relative army strengths, not diplomatic scores, but its' appearance is rather random.

A lot of times, even on Immortal, but they tend to fade away pretty quickly.

All I got is that 1 warrior on the screen.
One of my failed attempts at cultural OCC...horrible spawn location and both the SH and Oracle on turn 40...lol.

Wait...you guys can see the image? I clicked the spoiler button and it's just blank. I can see other people's uploaded images though.

i've had this happen a few times before and it's almost always egypt who is afraid. i can never tell why because my army is always smaller than their's when they are afraid. it might be that you are way ahead in technology, wonders, policies, etc.

I don't see it either. Google chrome browser. (I've given up on the slow and buggy firefox).

As I mentioned, all I got is 1 warrior. Aside from that, all I researched were AH/Calendar/Writing, I lost on SH(and someone, I reckon egypt, got the Oracle on turn 40...). I believe on Deity computers start with 4 or 5 techs already researched, so it can't be that I'm ahead in tech.
I've played about 15 deity games including the ones I died in, but I've never seen this happen. Even in the domination games when I beat some AIs down, I haven't seen anyone becoming 'afraid'.
Is this a bug or what?

I've seen AFRAID quite a few times on lower levels. In my case it usually happens to warmonger AIs who think they can't beat you but badly want to. Distance plays a factor in this - neighbors are never afraid (at least for me). Some of the ladies (and a few men too) are nutheads who do not hesitate to DOW a civ on the other corner of the continent but they find the distance to be a powerful hindrance so instead of really DOWing I guess that's how the status comes.

Still I'm afraid no one has really figured out the mechanic after so long.

I had Monty being 'afraid' of me with no reason whatsoever at deity. 10 turns later he knocked on my door with dozen of jags. It's all good. She'll come to her senses, don't you worry.

that's really strange. i would guess it's a bug, or just the fact that the AI is wacky in general
