Year 656 of the Forging

The South

Even as money flows in from western buyers, the Venetianers look to expand east. Their first move is to send a trade expedition to the isolationist kingdom of Arlen, where they plead for lower tariffs and open ports. While lords of Arlen, in little need of foreign goods, return a firm no, more independent minded merchants strike limited deals with the southerners behind their lords’ backs. Despite these concessions, the expedition returns home with relatively little to show for their efforts, and the merchant-lords of the city think it better to not risk a loss again, and so instead invest in storm drains throughout the city, meaning the city does not all but shut down during the stormy season.

Unchecked thus far, the Cult of Arot spreads farther than ever before, working its way west to the island of Lusus. When the Venetianer trade expedition visited the island on its way to Arlen’s heartland, a small group of cult members joined the crew. By the end of the year, the cult has spread to Zlato Island and even the mainland of Bogatstvo.

In Kæderith a group of Arots are found to be keeping tabs on the royal family and are executed on the steps of the palace, but not before coins from Arlen are found in their possession. Further investigation reveals the Arots were employed by House Arr.

Perhaps frightened by Ciaden agitations on their borders, Aernolean builders finish their fortress on time. On the southern edge of Lake Virid, near the new Denardan border, the castle rises out of the forest like a mountain. It is essentially impervious to attack, but many now regret not building it in a mountain pass near Ciad in light of their recent aggression. The Hasks of Aernolea also greatly expand their infantry army, and some say they plan to march upon the bankrupt Denard using their new fortress as a jumping-off point. Others suggest the Ciad, weakened from their failed invasion, are the target.

The Gyllendal continue their focus on developing their trade lanes, investing in a naval academy where it is said they keep scrolls and charts that outline secret coves to take on fresh-water, natural deep-water ports to put in during storms, and a myriad of other secrets to help their ships navigate far and wide.

The lord of Dresul expands their already impressive agriculture base, importing cattle from Arlen and breeding them, and then exporting the cheese and milk at large markups. While a plan that would be lucrative in peacetime, it flounders due to civil war in the Republics, making exporting anything a challenge, save at great expense.

Gotthard Halling watches as his dockyard struggles to service the increased traffic from Kaerditch and Venetianers and takes step to correct the problem by expanding Baumstadt’s seaport: investing in new dredging, new oxen-powered cranes, new warehouses, and a custom house. By the end of the year, trade on the Bay of Pearls has largely moved west to Baumstadt.

In Arthendal the Old Faith holds a festival in honor of King Deargwin II, whose piety is reinforced by yearly donations to the druidic orders which serve as preisthoods for the faith, and several sacrifices are made to bring luck to those on campaign. When news of success arrives from the front, King Deargwin attributes them to the druids and wins their favor almost effortlessly.

Peace At Last for the Royal Remnant

At last, the lands of Copperhead lay silent. House Arden, one of the two sides of the Twilight War, has finally triumphed over the Harts. The leader of the house, Jacob Arden, praised the entry of House Marshwell of Malair into the war on their behalf as the key turning point, but several observers have also pointed to superior horses from Venetianer breeders as an important factor. The victors immediately turned to securing their position, and appointed several Marshwell and Arden minor vassals to positions of power. Soon after the city was secured, Jacob removed it as the capital of the kingdom and instead proclaimed a new kingdom with him as king, that of Denard, which only covers the lands under his control

But changing the name of their lands won’t solve the problems that still plague it. House Hart, even after being beaten in the field and bending the knee, still has great influence in the city. Moreover, after three years of strife, the fields lay fallow and unplanted, the mines stand silent, the serfs are buried or burned, and the soldiers have no homes to return to. Without real income for the crown of Denard, the treasury is disappearing- and with it the soldiers’ loyalty. Jacob has turned abroad for loans, but as past creditors look for repayment and find none, and the cost of restoring the city to greatness mounts, even those cannot fund him. The war may be won, but Copperhead’s problems are not over.

War Through the Sitka Spruce Pass

Meanwhile to their north, yet another war begins. King Wels IV of Ciad declares war upon the heathens to their north. Ciaden soldiers rush through the narrow Sitka Spruce pass into the mountains of the Brotherhood of the Cowl. But the attack is ill-advised, as the Cowled Hammers’ heavy plate combined with the unfavorable terrain spell heavy losses for the invaders. In one battle, an ambush in a forested valley leads to a full-on rout, to the invaders’ shame. Before August even sees its end, King Wels IV is leading his forces home, tail between his legs, beaten but perhaps not discouraged.

The Brotherhood, though outraged at the attack, chooses not to pursue a response and instead offers a condemnation of the Ciaden kingdom from on high.

The Republican Civil War

War, unsurprisingly, continues in the southeast. The newest front, that of the United Republics, stalls as dissent at home from House Yew’s greatest rival, House Hawthorne, pulls their troops from the front and demands an end to the war. Their motives are unknown, but accusations range from cowardice to Massoul gold as the year wears on. When House Yew declines, House Hawthorne forms an anti-war coalition to replace the current Triarchs with pro-peace leaders, and ropes in many minor merchant princes, who likewise recall their troops. Left nearly alone at the front while their enemies have the military advantage at home, House Yew finds itself unable to advance further and instead focuses on entrenching their position.

But matters take a harsher turn when House Hawthorne, finding the Yew family unwilling to yield the war, attempts a coup which bloodily breaks past the Tridian city guards and kills many of the senators. Torn between abandoning the front and securing the homeland, House Yew chooses to walk the middle path and leaves only a skeletal force to hold most of their captured land. As the bulk of their forces march home to Tridia to confront the Hawthorne alliance, a small detachment storms the Tear, a major castle on the Drop, by sea, securing the island at last. They install a merchant prince as lord of the Drop and claim the land for House Yew (notably, not the United republics, but the merchant house itself). Meanwhile, House Yew retains control of the navy by doubling wages, and manages to even blockade the city.

The city is no castle. It is not made to withstand a siege, despite what its imposing walls might say, and before the campaigning season is even over House Hawthorne is forced to the field. Starved and disheartened, they are easily shattered and sent packing, leaving House Yew unchallenged. But the senate is in tatters and the Republic in disorder. Hoping to restore order, the princes of House Yew force a bill through what is left of the senate which temporarily abolishes the Republic. “Temporarily”, however, is not defined, and is only assumed to be the end of the war. The move causes widespread dissent, but could be beneficial in the long run if the people accept it.

Despite House Yew’s disorder, the Kishlahi army left in the homeland is too small even to challenge this skeleton force holding the eastern plains. The Islanders have more luck at sea and force the Republican navy out of the straits of their familiar islands, using the confusing tangle of islands and shoals between the Drop and the mainland to their advantage, albeit taking losses of their own in the process.

War on the Ishtin

King Donan IV of Ellarion marches together with Lord Eastlyn and Lord Osbryn of Tareen from Bridgeport for the fiefdoms of Osbryn to retake the waterfront and throw the Massoul back into the sea, accompanied by a major host. Massoul soldiers flee before them, abandoning sound defensive positions out of fear. Indeed, all goes well until a Tareenan scout stumbles into the command tent the night before a major offensive and warns of ambush ahead. Uncertain of how to proceed and wary of being caught from behind, Tareenan forces choose instead to wait and watch, and soon the Islanders realize their ploy has failed. Now they truly do flee: House Bede to Saltstone and a combination of Ghupta and Massoul forces back to the city of Greyshell.

Unable to assault Greyshell without massive losses, King Donan sets up camp abutting the town and settles in to wait. By the time the year closes, the Islanders are stubbornly holding onto the city while the besiegers lament the lack of a porper siege train. At Saltstone, however, the garrison manages to hold out until relief arrives in the form of Lord Osbryn and half the Tareenan army. Caught between the hammer and the anvil, Bede surrenders and are relieved of their flag, arms and officers before being sent back to the Whale Tale.

Bridgeport

King Diomenes of Aelrich, his army picked bare by starvation and siege, calls upon his vassals for reinforcements, but long years of war have worn on their realms as well and only house Leng answers the call. Reports abound that Arco has three thousand men massed at their castle whom they refuse to send, but when confronted the duke of Arco denies their existence despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

Meanwhile the forces of Arthendal march south, their legions numerous and grim. The entire Tareenan coast of Terrin bay north of the Esthellen river falls under their sway, though it all ostensibly is returned to Tareenan control. What few Aelrichi soldiers that remain outside Bridgeport either flee or are captured, and those that resist are executed.

While the Arthali were originally greeted as liberators, their almost mechanical approach to freeing occupied land and harsh discipline sows fear in even their vassals. Indeed the Saoirthal are convinced of treachery; they even present intercepted correspondence involving their supposedly allied king detailing plans to seize Tareenan land for themselves. Despite their king’s protests to the contrary and his renowned piety, the Saoirthal cannot be convinced and their lords order their forces home. King Deargwin, scared to anger his other vassals while so far from home, lets the duke leave without trouble.

As the Arthali approach and the Saoirthal desert, the Aelrich are busy preparing further defenses in the captured city. Captured craftsmen are enslaved (a practice not illegal but generally looked down upon in the Hallowed Kingdom) and put to work repairing and rebuilding the city’s walls. A secondary wall is built about half a mile inside the original, effectively creating a city inside a city, and it is here most Aelrichi operations are based. The Aelrichi also implement a district system, in which preexisting divisions inside the city (religious quarter, merchant’s sector, etc.) are made official and travel between them are restricted, so as to hinder organized resistance.

The Arthali finally arrive in July and surround the city, but make no progress against the now reinforced walls. By late September, running out of time, they assault the city anticipating devastating losses, but are saved by a group of Tydwell loyalists who manage to fight there way to the gatehouse and open the gate. The Tydwells are promptly skewered by crossbow bolts, but the damage is done and the Arthali pour through the opening.

But without the Saoirthali heavy armor to absorb crossbow bolts and break through spear lines, the Arthali still suffer heavy losses. Despite this, though, discipline and leadership win the day, and a well timed charge to the spearmen’s flank by a contingent of eastern lancers incites a rout. By the end of two days’ fighting, Arthendal controls the city outside the inner wall.

A second siege then sets in--one at a much reduced range--with both sides assembling cover on buildings tops. An archer’s battle between the opposing crossbowmen begins, with Arthali men sniping from the outer buildings and Aelrichi men from the inner. Very quickly however, it becomes obvious that the defenders have the advantage at range and the Arthali will have to either suffer gradual but severe losses or storm the walls. Two weeks after they take the outer walls, Arthali men again prepare for an assault, this time on the inner fortress. The battle is bloody but the Arthedhal are able to gain the interior through overwhelming force and grim disciplined determination. Inside they meet the heavy lancers of the defending Aelrich, who punish the invaders severely with a charge just as they break through the gates. But numbers and training are decisive and the lancers are forced to withdraw for fear of being pulled from their mounts and slain as they lay immobile on their back in their heavy armor.

House Leng is the first to break, fleeing via galley while Houses Treiscos and Uradel cover their retreat. Soon both Treiscos and Uradel follow, the Aelrichi commanders fighting valiantly to the end and ensuring many of their soldiers, including, incredibly, their heavy lancers, escape cleanly away. They sail back to Aelrich, defeated for now but maybe not forever.

Ultimately it is the Arthendhal who control Bridgeport at the end of the campaigning season, though heavily depleted. They have made camp in the city to await reinforcements while hostile galleys maintain a blockade beyond the river mouth.

Raiding the Namidas Coast

As Treiscos fights in Bridgeport, and its ships blockade its port, along with allies from Aelrich and Massoul, the Langroan vassals take turns raiding the Namidian coast. After some initial successes by the Gildblade and Gathous, the Haro prove less lucky and run into a Namidian trap. Ambushed, their ship does not return, but the raids draw valuable troops away from both the new eastern lands and defense from the Salt Kingdom.

North

Even as the new year dawns crisp and clear, House Rascuit , once proud and loyal vassals of the Chairt, declare their independence. It seems that Yeldum Rascuit, lord of the minor house, was murdered, coldly and openly, during a dinner by his younger brother Celdon. Celdon has long campaigned to distance the rich south-western holdings from the lords of Chairt and has sent multiple messengers to their southern neighbors the Rallus in an attempt to secure their support and perhaps protection.

Chairt has long been expecting such a move, and in response has been building up their military. Almost as soon as they receive the message, Chairtan forces march south, crossing the mountains even as snow lies upon the path to quickly subdue the rebel house. Celdon, it seems, had expected them to wait for the spring thaw to clear the passes before attacking him, and thus was caught in mid-preparation. Many of his forces are caught outside the castle and put to the sword, but a few manage to retreat to the hold and are besieged throughout the year, surviving off fish from an underground river that runs through the keep.

(-3 levy infantry House Rascuit, -1 levy infantry, -1 levy slinger, House Chairt)

Meanwhile the Orus of the Sea are also growing closer to House Castus, signing several new agreements with them, primarily trade related but also relating to shared access rights and an officer exchange program, in response to a major diplomatic mission by the Castus to the Orus port capital. Indeed, Prince Ventos is honored in the same fashion an Orusian high lord may be, which is rare for foreigners.

The Araskamenians are hardly known for their patience. In the wake of the cultural and now religious differences arising between themselves and their mercantile vassal, they do not wait for the Pearl lands to formally declare their independence. When taxes fail to be delivered and the proper tribute is not paid, Rask soldiers march upon the Pearl; a show of force is in order. They encounter stiffer resistance than expected, however, when lightly armored infantry begin to make hit and run attacks from the southern coast, on at least three occassion evacuating on mysterious galleys in the face of committed Rask counter-attacks. Ultimately the Rasks are forced to officially occupy the Pearl lands, installing Rask lords in place of openly rebelling Pearl ones. The enforced compliance does much to take the wind out of the sails of the Pearl lords, but it is not known for how long they will have to maintain their presence. For now the lords prove much more compliant, seeing as the penalty for otherwise is exile or death. As for the Arot priests, they suddenly seem much rarer. Perhaps to make their point that much more pointed, the Rasks build a grand new temple to the old ways in the grand port city of the Pearl guild. Unpopular with the locals, it serves as a rallying banner for the vassals of the kingdom and an unmistakable reminder of who is king.

(-1 levy infantry House Araskamemni, -2 levy infantry Pearl Guild)

The lords of Langro, House Treiscos, expand local ports and invest further in their merchants, plying the new routes all along the western sea. As the majority of trade moves inland or to the eastern coast, they are coming to increasingly dominate what little western trade there is left, and in many coastal markets are the only merchants left. But despite the stabilizing control of the Langroans over the western routes, as war spreads, trade is faltering like never before and they find themselves barely breaking even on investment.

In Zakijaya, the sounds of hammer hitting anvil ring through the air as they craft new, heavier armor as quickly as possible. Having gleaned the secret of the Eastern lancers’ armor -- some say through espionage, others through diplomacy -- from the lands of Aernolea, house Jana set about upgrading their cavalry to be both more armored and more powerful.

Namidian Troubles

While King Erwin Mandragoran of Namidas is in the west, campaigning against the Aelrich, his vassal, the lord of Ravenwing is busy organizing the fallen Payans. He is gathering up all able-bodied men of fighting age and, instead of leaving them sitting around, he is training them and arming them and making them loyal to him... In essence, he is using them to form his own personal army. This he does with the full permission of the remaining Payans, for out of his king’s knowledge the Raven lord has no illusions of loyalty -- instead, he has delusions of grandeur and an ambition that cannot be quenched.

Almost simultaneously in the east of Namidas, other nobles plot more openly to declare independence. The combined forces of Houses Daemael and Telamon offer an ultimatum to the king: withdraw from the wars, bring home the soldiers, or be deposed. While the king has offered no response as of yet, reports indicate that his response will most likely be no. Whether the high houses of Namidas will make any move to enforce their declaration is an answered not yet answered.

Meanwhile the King Erwin Mandragoran is faring much better in the lands of Aelrich, where the Houses Cepehales and Acro are strangely silent and the majority of Lengan and Uradelan forces are away in the south.

Despite some significant losses, attributed mostly to poor morale and increasingly distrustful troops, King Erwin takes two relatively small but well stocked forts over the course of the summer and manages to secure his holdings south of the mountain range separating his lands from those of the Uradelans. Now, with the mountains securing his northern flank and Terrin Bay his south, he is in a relatively defensible position to hold out against the inevitable Aelrichi response.

Namidian forces in the Jaegar fiefdom face increasingly heavy pressure from House Cren and its vassals. The combined Salt army, cleverly outwitting the defending Jaegar by presenting false hope of recapturing a border fortress and then ambushing them in a mountain pass, outmaneuver the latter and engage them in pitched battle. The Jaegars are crushed, their lord killed and his family captured. With the heir in their hands, the Salt kingdom is easily able to bargain for the Jaegan capital city and accompanying fortress. After that, though, the Salt Kingdom makes no further moves inwards as the year drags on, instead choosing to secure what they’ve captured so far and build up easy supply lines as foragable resources decline.

War for the Iknitsh Holds

The Őctahágyűrë king declares war upon the Iknitsh holds, claiming the Iknitsh lands have historically been Őctahágyűrë, though none save the Őctahágyűrë seem to believe this. They march into the Holds proudly, taking what they wish as they claim is their right. The Iknits avoid open battle or even skirmishes, instead hoping the Őctahágyűrë will be sated with what they have already pillaged. His hope is in vain, and open battle is finally forced late in the year.

The battle is a one-sided one. Heavy Őctahágyűrë mounted ax lead the way for heavily armored infantry and a long line of skirmishing slingers. Despite the superior number of Iknitsh infantry, theirs are levies and poorly led, while the Őctahágyűrë are battle-hardened, expertly led professional killers in ½ inch-thick plate armor. The Iknitsh attempt to hole up at near a border fort but a well funded siege train quickly constructs the tools they need to demolish the walls. Within months the Iknitsh are defeated and their lords forced to bend a knee. The Iknitsh Holds become the newest fiefdom of the Kingdom of Cságyűk-Észtergyálj.

But northern blood runs cold and thick, and the Iknitsh Holds are fiercer than some. They’ve bent the knee and sworn the oaths, and northern honor is renowned, but Iknitsh peasants are chafing under foreign rule. A brotherhood betrayed does not pass easy.

War in the Bangor Holds

House Telaar, perhaps relieved by the Őctahágyűrë focus elsewhere, turns their mighty army southwards, declaring war upon the Bangor holds, revanchist claims of rebuilding their ancient empire spurring their soldiers forth.

They attack and, pouring over the ranges separating Raemyn lands from those of the Weden, manage to take several of the mountain fortresses of the Weden. And while the Tareen have the numbers to push through, the Bangor make them pay dearly, their highlanders especially inflicting disproportionate losses in hit and run attacks upon the slower moving, heavier armored northerners. The invasion bogs down in the forests as hit and run attacks increase, leaving the entirety of the northern highlands occupied by Telaaran forces.

Player Notes

I just switched all nations who did not send orders to NPC. If you still want to play, please indicate as much.

All players,
If you have forces in foreign soil or on multiple fronts, you MUST detail who is where. If you do not it makes my job MUCH more difficult and I have to make all sorts of assumptions I would rather not make.

Ailedhoo,
Please try to provide some precision to your orders. “Invest 15k in infrastructure” is not nearly as useful as “invest 15k in sewers” for example.
Also, you had 25kC and tried to spend 30kC. We ignored your orders to purchase a merchant cog.

Golden1Knight,
Your increasingly diverse army is proving difficult to supply for your logisticians. Maintenance and supply costs are increasing without a real increase in efficacy.

To: Aelrich
From: Arthendhal

Your pathetic armies have been crushed, your great defence at Bridgeport has been proven wanting when faced with the power of Arthendhal and the favour of the true gods, your vassals have fled before our might like deer before the wolves. Yet we do not thirst for blood, nor do we as some attest seek domination as you did over our ally Tareen or Aelrich itself through conquest.

We thus present these terms. Submit in fealty to House Arthalas and pay tribute to Arthendhal and withdraw your forces and ships from all foreign engagements. Do this and you, your Lords and your people will have the peace and serenity they have long desired. Fail to heed us, and we shall wipe out you and all those of your vassals who defy us as surely as we wiped out your armies in Tareen, and divide the lands of our foes in Aelrich amongst our vassals.

~ King Deargwin II

ooc: So much for Bridgeport :p oh and tribute would constitute I suppose 4kC per turn, my yoke is light.
