Spoiler :

We have made some progress. Sapporo just fell this turn and that has helped to flatten out our northwest border. Japan's offense has been about 7 units; only one is still alive.

Tsetserleg was ours for about two turns then it flipped on us.

Trades
Japan will accept straight peace.
Mongols will accept straight peace.
Britian and Germany have Incense to sell, if we want to buy.
Clockworks is widely known, but only Greece and Britian need it and neither one is wealthy.

Workers (west to east)
1NW of Bulgan: 1 native worker, 6 Move2 slaves (1 road per turn). Need to road the mined hill and then hang around until Bulgan's culture expansion in 2 turns to road for the sniping stack that is 1W of Bulgan. Maybe road to Ulaangom from the south?
1SW of Sapporo: most recent enslaved slave (Move1). No plans.
1S of Sapporo: 3 native workers (1 road per turn). No plans.
3SE of New York: 2 native workers, 2 Move2 slaves (3 turn mines). Currently mining a grassland. Sorta planned on using them to improve around New York, to at least mine both roaded grasslands that New York could work.
1E of Philadelphia: 2 native workers, 6 Move2 slaves (2 turn mines). Mining the last 3 hills around Philly; the hills already have roads.
1W of Missisuaga: 3 native workers (1 road per turn). Roading around Missisuaga, for others to mine later. The city is currently working an unimproved BG.
1W of Halifax: 14 Move1 slaves (2 turns mines). Movement exhausted this turn, but they could mine where they stand. Two extra slaves for their current task but no spare units to escort the extra to a more productive combination.
1W of Charlottetown: 1 native worker and 8 Move2 slaves (1 road per turn). These guys are planned to road westward to Ottawa. Two slaves are not needed to road in one turn, but lack of escorts hampers us.
2SE of Quebec: Supply Shipment.
1W of Surrey: 6 Move2 slaves and 2 Move1 slaves. These guys don't do anything very well together. For a while I had these in two stacks, each working their own forest chop for Surrey. No real plans; just stay out east and improve tiles as needed.

Random Stuff
We have one geek learning for us, in Calgary.

We have 15 taxmen; some, maybe even all of them, can be fired and put back to working tiles.

We have cash to spend again.

We can adjust the luxury slider upwards if desired.

We have zero Academies, though they have been available to us for 100 turns.

We met France, who is getting clobbered by Spain.

We captured Tsetserleg but then had it flip back to the Mongols. We lost 6 units in that flip.

Incense can be bought from Germany and Britian. That should let us lower our luxury rate.

If we hook up another Fur we could see it to France, the wealthiest nation we know, wtih 36K in gold.

The only luxuries in our part of the world seem to be Furs and Incense.

The Greeks have done nothing, except to send two Ghosts to attack us. We lost 2 Pikes and they lost both Ghosts. Their lack of action is getting worrisome.

Bulgan will have culture expanison in 2 turns. Thunder Bay will complete its second 10 shield culture building this IBT. Ulaangom needs a Christian Community. Sapporo just started an American Flag.

Missisuaga can start on military after the aqueduct completes this turn.

New Castles in the East are training Pikes, mostly.

We have an embassy with Germany, but I think they built it.

Our Missionary is in Sapporo.

Another hard round, but a nice second effort at Sapporo. :goodjob:

Keshik is kabobed by a Pike outside Ulaagnom (4 of 5).

The Sapporo campaign has served its purpose in getting us peace with Japan whenever we want, so we should concentrate completely on Mongolia and make peace with the Japanese as soon as any significant stack appears. It's very likely that Sapporo will flip on us during the truce, but it's the Mongol heartland we need to build a winning position, not Sapporo.

It appears we're nowhere close to affording both Clockworks and Sacred Art, but we have fair prospects of a threefer by buying Clockworks and offering it to the British and the Greeks. I don't see any problem in dealing with the Greeks; we'll need the next twenty turns or so to conclude the Mongol war.

Before hitting Enter we can put several more units into Sapporo to suppress resistance during the safe interturn, from as far away as Ulaangom.

Slow progress, this one is really going to be tough, but we wanted nothing else :D

Got it, hopefully we can make some real progress versus the Mongols soon.

Short update well into the turnset.

We got a few techs at the start, made peace with Japan once war happiness was gone and their units started to show up, fell into a deep happiness hole.

We recovered from that and started to push deep into the Mongol heartland using our settlers as well to push on.
They seem gassed and are ready for the taking during the next turnset.

Our economy is starting to look healthy and I believe the next round of turns will get us on a very positive track.

Sounds great. :goodjob: Thanks for the update.

Pre turn

do as suggested by NP:
get clockworks from Spain for 137gpt and elephants :)
we don't need no elephants at this moment

get alchemy from Greece for clockworks, they even throw in 100gold
this opens up two new techs, but they are all known by the rest :(
Get gunpowder from Britain to know where saltpeter is located, need to add 18gpt and 38gold

well, we don't have saltpeter and I can see only one source in Greek land

I do switch a few cities from castles to markets, we will need those markets for a long time to come
move some units towards Tsetzerleg as we want to take that city back

min research set to PP as we don't research that path anyway

IT Mongols happily waste 4 of their units against us

Turn 1 1220AD
war happiness has gone with the wind, sign peace with japan and need to deal with a massive happiness issue

massive happy building order started, we need more temples, theaters etc, not going to raise lux to 40%
overall not very pleasing to play, defeat a few Mongols but lose some units too

Turn 2 1230AD
prepare for attack on Tsetzerleg while building the happy stuff

Turn 3 - 1240AD
first few happy buildings come online, we also get a missionary for free

build road and get the attack stack to Tsetzerleg, together with a settler of ours

IT French build Vatican

Turn 4 - 1250AD
trade our furs to Britain for their incense, have to throw in some cash though

Tsetserlegs time has come, take out 3 units and capture the city and replace it with or own
known as Chicago, gain a MGL while taking out units, rush a castle in Chicago with it

move the attack stack forward towards the Mongol core

IT no attacks from Mongols, Greece execute an invisible but unsuccessful attack

Turn 5 - 1260AD
move a combat settler into the Mongol territory too

IT Mongols now avoid attacking us to move into our core, let them do that

Turn 6 - 1270AD
found combat city of Seattle to get into the Mongol core
take out several units behind the lines, push aggressively towards Daland

IT Mongols still have quite a few keshiks to boot and attack here and there taking out 3 units

Turn 7 - 1280AD
take out most Mongol units including 3 keshiks near Daland, attack the city ina bloody fight
manage to take out 5 units and take the city, however the culture borders are really not in our favor

IT Mongols muster again 5 attacks and defeat 4 our our knights
their GA has to be over or are keshiks that cheap?

Turn 8 - 1290AD
while taking out the enemy units finally get a monk that culture bombs Daland

decide to sell France iron and horses for 26gpt, we can use everything we can get
we now make 89gpt though we still pay a lot of gpt to others

IT again 5 keshik attacks but this time only 1 succeeds
Daland riots

Turn 9 - 1300AD
we can reach Choybalsan and take it defeating a mere 2 spears :)
gain another monk and culture bomb the city

IT no attacks by Mongols, they are finally gassed
Babylon finishes Holy Book Printed

Turn 10 - 1310AD
prepare attack on Baruun Urt, we got a big stack there with a worker trio to build roads as well.

For trades, we do not have enough cash yet, but hopefully we can afford renaissance soon

Our new Mongol possessions

Nice work! I think the next player should send invasion forces south to Hovd, then Tabriz, Mandalgovi, and Karakorum. Working in a clockwise fashion like that will leave Mongolian cities as a buffer zone between us and Japan/Germany until we're ready to wrap up the war.

Who's up next?

BtW, I'm just interested for myself: what rules do you apply for settlers? Can they build cities inside enemy culture (i.e. non-home culture)? Is it okay to build cities like CxC with enemy cities?
I tried to play with diffirent rules for myself and it's interesting to know what rules good players usually use for so-called combat settlers.

Nice progress! However, the position still looks very though. It's really challenging game. And therefore it very interesting to read all these turnsets.

The Roster:
ThERat -
Northern Pike - up
Greebley - on deck
Elephantium

@ RedKi, we do use combat settlers which can be powerful in CCM as settlers have double moves. We do not play CxC as we do have a limited number of settlers and I personally strongly dislike this sort of exploit

Fine work on the battlefield, and even better in the exchequer.

I've got it.

The only thing we rule out is abandoning a tactical town in the turn when it's founded to found another one one tile forward--the bubble-chamber trick, as it's been called. Otherwise, creative and aggressive use of settlers is permitted and encouraged.

And abandoning tactical towns in the turn of their foundation so that it's not necessary to garrison them is fine--it just can't be done to burrow forward.

Edit: Cross-post with Rat's slightly less permissive view. I don't think there's anything wrong with CxC, but it's a non-issue in CCM where letting every city have its full twenty-one tiles is important, and really too tight even for C3C AW.

CxC on a huge map just doesn't make much sense anyway, so the point is more or less moot.

It does occur at times but that's merely due to the map layout.

btw, I am still hopeful that we might discover some saltpeter in the Mongol FoW...we never know but NP's turnset will give us a better idea.

CxC makes sense in C3C in tundra/desert and usually std maps. Even then I tend to use it mostly on my starting continent. Settlers are just too hard to come by in CCM, until it is fairly late. At that point you tend to have a lot of open spaces and do not want to waste settlers like that.

Yes this is one thing about CxC, the other thing is to build cities near (or inside) enemy borders in style CxC (when after building the city borrows enemy tiles). So, this can let attack enemy cities from own roads and in one step. This speeds up things. However, I don't know how it works in CCM...
I noted for myself that this things makes much differents for me comparing to civ4, sometimes I even try to play civ3 with rules for cities from civ4.

My view agrees with NP for C3C.

For CCM, I think you can do what you want and it doesn't matter. Early, your settlers are limited. By the time you have settlers galore usually with rails, sending a settler in with move 2 into enemy territory simply speeds the war with less units doing nothing other than moving up. Usually the outcome is determined by that time in any case.

I guess with the speed 2 settlers, I assume that using them to attack is ok, because otherwise why make them speed 2? It offsets the fact that CCM units don't go to speed 4 like cavalry armies do. I also find the game more fun when I can use all the units in a turn and don't have to spend multiple turns plodding along to the city to attack it.

I think the speed 2 settlers were well designed to keep later warfare more interesting. I totally approve of their use.

Oh, yeah; me, too!

By the time you've sweated through the early parts of CCM and can finally make your own settlers, you want to inflicit some damage on the AI and having faster settlers helps do just that. Rail to the border in question, bring up the Motorized Settler, move him/her/it across the border, and, because it still has a movement point left, build a city, and then start battering down the AI. It feels so good to be able to be on a fast paced offense!

In fact, I now sorta resent having to do things differently in C3C. Whatdayamean, I can't build a city on the same turn? How lame is that? :D

I like the Speed 2 Settlers.

I've played five turns, and we've taken five Mongol cities. Karakorum may still present a problem, but once we've taken it we'll essentially be mopping up.

I'll try to post by midday Saturday--possibly late Friday--so that the next player will have most of the weekend.

sounds good NP :goodjob:

Ya, I can play this weekend.

I am thinking that unless we get involved in another war that going back and dealing with the Greeks after the Mongols might be best. What do you all think? The initial part of the war may be tough as I think they have all their units still (no wars).

Greebley, I think that's a good plan. We'll need to deal with the Greeks sooner or later, and they might just invade us if we wait too long.
