Thank You Post

Hello. And welcome to Dawn of the Middle Kingdom.

With this story, I'm hoping to draw attention to Leoreth's Dawn of Civilization modmod for Rhye's and Fall of Civilization,
which I consider infinitely superior in almost every way. This story will mostly focus on gameplay and specific quirks about the mod itself.

Over the course of the game, I will be following a doctrine that has served me well when playing civs
(Arabia, China, Ottomans) that are not exactly Western Euro tier,
but have the capability to rise above their station and prevent European domination over the game world.

As of DoC version 1.81, the two major civilizations that have been inexorably changed
the most from their original states in vanilla RFC are China and India.
Both have received incredible map overhauls and China now has a much different
(but better stability map) in that it lost Tibet & Xinjiang as relatively stable areas,
and gained Yunnan, northern Vietnam & southern Manchuria to make up for it.
Both civilizations also have completely different (and better/more appropriate) UPs and UHV goals now as well.

Here are my settings:

And without further ado, we can begin.

DoC always needs more advertising :D

Westward We Go.

Opening up with China at 3000 BC, you can see that China no longer starts off in Beijing like in vanilla RFC,
but in region of the traditional western capitals of many Chinese states; which housed cities such as Xi'an, Louyang & Chang'an.
The AI typically makes good usage out of the spot, but it is not ideal for our purposes.

Our first Warrior bravely marches off into the Gobi Desert to begin one of the first stages of the D.E.A.T.H doctrine.
Claim all the huts. It doesn't even matter if we don't get Gold or Tech,
so long as all the other AIs are denied Gold & Tech, the mission will generally be considered a success.
In the meanwhile, the Settler moves 2E, 1S to settle a much better city site.

Normally, it's understood that many players will take the City Raider promotions
to undertake an early rush, but if failed, can really cripple the general game plan.
The Warrior opts to be trained in forest walking instead, which will help
him cover much more ground and be of more use to me in the long run.

Some new players don't know this but in RFC and DoC,
the player is alotted 3 free barb wins right out the gate.
I expend one to make an insane maneuver that under normal
circumstance, would not succeed. The Woodsman Warrior
fords the river to attack a fortified Barbarian Warrior.
The Barbarians are so stupefied by the bold display that
they don't even see the clubs flying towards their heads in time.

We meet Sargon of the Babylonians.
When the Persians come for him, he surely will not be missed.

India does not spawn in 3000 BC like it did in vanilla, and instead, spawns in 1500 BC.
Before their spawn, two independent cities will spawn by the southern bank of the Ganges.
India usually becomes very advanced if all goes well for them, and our second Warrior aims to cripple them.
By means of a squat. We will take Varanasi out of the picture and maintain this position until the Indian spawn.

The compulsory subscription. A bit different from TCB, but I can hardly complain, it's another Dawn story :D

Yet another good story by Dawn! I like the fact that this one is a little shorter, and it is also of China :D

Animal Planet.

A group of Settlers narrowly avoids death by lions
by hunkering down and transforming their bodies into buildings.

In the interim, our Woodsman Warrior has reached the western coast of Anatolia
in record speed thanks to every hut giving him experience.

Unfortunately, our other exploring Warrior was not so lucky.
Bears are overpowered, especially without difficulty level bonuses.

One of the indie cities on the Ganges spawned,
but thanks to my squat, the other one isn't coming out.
He'll have to stay there just a little longer.

Word on India. Their new UP is a +1 Health bonus for each Specialist,
resulting in a very powerful bonus and an emphasis on growth.
Also, their map has been significantly altered. All along the banks
of the Ganges, you can see Flood Plain Grassland riverside tiles.
They give a whopping +5 Food & +1 Commerce.
Yeah, that's right. India's serious business now, like it should be.
They do have two difficult threats to fight against though,
which I'll bring up when they come up.

The two Confucian Academies & two Taoist Pagoda UHV goal is still in.
Which is good, considering that the goal encouraged the player
to practice micromanagement on a timetable (having to
prepare for the Mongol spawn while juggling UHV requirements).
I want +30 Hammers per chop ASAP anyways.

Zhongdu (Beijing) becomes the new Holy City.
Also, Holy Cities in DoC cannot be razed, whatsoever.
Something to bear in mind here.

Very interesting, subscribing, and wish to see more. :)

Don't Worry, It's For Science.

Yeah. I already have my first GP, thanks to the new Chinese UB; the Taixue.
The Taixue, or the Imperial School is a Library replacement with a +3 Culture bonus & 3 Scientist slots.
It's not exactly plausible to run 3 Scientists when your happy cap is 4 (5 for the capital)
but it definitely helps mid-game and helps to generate GPs much quicker.

Li Fan's body is torn apart and warped into an Academy as he is sacrificed for the greater good.

Ahem.

I forgot to mention China's new UP. The Power of the Myriads has been replaced
by the Power of Invention. China's tech costs are -20% for techs that no one else has discovered.
It ends after the Renaissance is over and from then on China suffers a tech penalty,
but that's being worked on in the SVN versions.

Hangzhou is settled on the coast; it will be a critical city for some gambits that I'm going to utilize.

Yeah, all new stories have quick updates. It'll get slower...

Anyway, another Dawn story is always good.

Any plans for K(c)orea?

Oh my, seems that Dawn is picking up the pace with this new story of his. :)

That's 3 updates in under 24 hours. New record!
Although, gameplay updates take less time than narrative/other updates; factor that in.

I will be subbing! Too bad I cannot get DoC...

Unless you have a mac there is no reason you can't.

Or a slow computer without a lot of memory and power to it.

Any plans for K(c)orea?

D.E.A.T.H of course.

Gyros.

In exchange for learning how to count with fingers,
the Greeks teach us every single component needed for making gyros.

Unfortunately, due to the language barrier, the Chinese interpreted their instructions
for more practical purposes (such as being able to put a wheel on a cart,
rather than the mad, raving insistences that "gyros are cylinder-shaped").

In the end, the art of gyro-making forever eluded the Chinese, even to the modern day.

The Greeks also attempted to have the visiting Chinese sign up for some of their clubs
(read: cults) but the only one that achieved some modicum of success was the cult of Aphrodite.

Not to be outdone, the Indians taught the Chinese how to cast Heal and remove status effects.

Persia spawned and it was important to secure Monarchy from them.
Monarchy is even more critical in DoC than it is in even regular BtS,
at least for an early-spawning civ. With a happy cap of 4 & no access
to Calendar resources right now, we can't boost our output,
without growing. It used to be that playing China on RFC, I had the misguided
idea of spamming Cottages when what I needed were Farms instead.
Don't let the abundant Food resources in China fool you, you'll need ALL
the growth you can get, and commerce is more easily gained from other sources.

(The Persians too, knew the ancient art of the gyro,
but sadly, would not impart those wisdoms to the Chinese)

And here we meet Phoenicia, another civ that has received an extreme home makeover in DoC.
Instead of spawning at Carthage, they actually spawn in the Middle East in Canaan.
