Get outta heeyah..no way!

I have HOMM3, but need to find my way into it. Started it a couple of times, but played the heck out of 5 years ago and struggle getting into 3 for some reason.

I recommend some UI mods that make it control a bit more modern.

Mileage may vary on speed turn-order (III) vs initiative (V) but both have some merits in combat. Town buildup strategy/resource prioritization/importance of creeping should be very similar, even if the units are different.

HOMM III has more broken adventure spells though! Expert earth town portal lets you just warp to any town you own of your choosing, multiple times a day (...) while dimension door is like that teleport spell in V...except with expert air magic you can cast it 5 times a day if you have the mana for it IIRC. Dimension door + expert air is almost untouchably broken lol.

The other big difference is HOMM V skill wheel vs HOMM III where you can just take 8 different things to expert (no sub specialization). HOMM III should be easier to understand at a glance since it's simpler, though I think V ultimately did better there.

I would recommend this campaign for Homm3
http://www.maps4heroes.com/heroes3/campaigns/download.php?testcookie=1&id=4

Much more challenging than regular ones, also very detailed (and touching imo) story.
And no worries TmiT, you will not get any spells here that you are not supposed to get :b

Haha, no worries. Getting through Dark Elf campaign in HOMM V and doing the Orc campaign in the expansion both on heroic have helped to free me from such crutches ;).

Spoiler :
When I did the dungeons & devils campaign for example I just built up Kreegan heroes in mission 1 and ran ballista specialist might hero and random heretic with summon elemental magic to clear the surrounding towns fast. Guides say to build up for black dragons but I say no way and build up the castle towns :D. You can have over 200 griffons, 150ish crusaders etc. It turns a map many people find hard/want to cheese to sneak past the boss fight into a really easy fight.

Learning to take most relevant stacks and leave others unrecruited in garrison, creep to progress building with resources, and prioritize what I'm attacking really helped a ton. I have to say after using might heroes for most of the lifting this go around I like their style more, you're not as dependent on mage guild draws and can progress faster w/ less resource investment.

As long as it's not rife with crap like one-way exits near starting town or hidden ambush/resource event screws it should be good times :mischief:.

No hidden events i think ;)
First map is like an intro, rather simple but well done.

Then you mostly battle powered up AIs, be careful which border guards you open ;)
Chances of not winning in the end are high here, even for very good players.
But nope, no unfair stuff like monoliths. Just very strong roaming enemy heroes.
So expect to get beaten up if you play :)

Only five? Hmm...

In no particular order

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Medieval II: Total War
Deus Ex
Age of Empires II
Half Life

It's virtually impossible for me to pick five, these were just the first to mind. But these are classed as my very favourites.

From best to worst (still the worst is really good)
Victoria 2 HOD: the best Pdx game. Much more complex than the map-painter simulator (*cough* Eu4 *cough*) with actual pops mechanics and an economic system plus the best research system in a Pdx game. Seriously, the only game I think that compares to civ IV in the hours of enjoyment it has provided me, and without mods it is far superior
Fallout New Vegas: After playing NV, I couldn't go back to Fallout 3. The best fallout up to date , with the best RPG experience, some memorable characters, passable combat (much better than 3, worse than FO4(the only thing that FO4 gets right with weapon customization)
Rome TW/Medieval 2 total war: the best TW games, both of then are really enjoyable games . I put thm together because they are actually similar . of course MTW2 is superior , but RTW , specifically with Europa Barborum is an incredible game
Crusader Kings 2: the second best Pdx game , the RPG possibilities make this title to stand out . Not as deep as Vic2 , and can get really easy but still a Wonderful game
Warthunder: It isn't as good as the others and there are game off of the list that are "better" (MGSV,XCOM-EW) but is my casual game for when I only got 30 minutes to spare

As a plus, 5 games that i hate, from less hated to more hated
Eu4: Not that it is a bad game, but try playing as a non European country (Aztec, Inca) and it is super boring. Try playing as an European country and it is easy. Of course OPM (theodoro) or Byzantium are fun to play, but the game itself seem is very shallow. Also the only good game from the hate list
Fo4: it killed the Fallout series for me. All missions are about lots of killing (contrary to NV were most could be done by talking). And the dialogue wheel is sub-par compare to the normal conversation. Combat is good, but I don't play FO for the combat, but for the RPG possibilities, which this game lacks.
Dawn of war 2: you pick a good game (DW:soulstorm wasn't excellent but it wasn't bad) and try to turn it into Company of Heroes ( great game BTW) and fail miserably. I hate it more than Fo4 because at least from Fo4 I get some very little enjoyment. And I get it discounted, instead of this full priced :) :) :) :):) :) :) :):) :) :) :):) :) :) :).
Civ VI: the confirmation that 1Upt is the norm. Is basically Civ V +. And you should probably know which is number one
Civ V: the Antichrist, the god slayer, the devil. Specifically at release. Gets extra Hate for not being as good as Civ IV. Gets even more hate for basically sending civ in a dark path of 1UPT and global happiness (good to see it removed) . Good game? Would you consider a son who kill is father and then burn is house Good? The father being Civ IV bts, the house being all that made Civ IV great. Then he covers the ground with salt so that nothing good grows . that's what Civ V did. Honorable mention to BE, which is CIv V in space. And even more honorable mention to starship's, because it sucks

PS: civ V isn't that bad, and DOW2 or FO4 should be heading the list but knowing the general feeling towards CIV V here I couldn't miss the opportunity. Still a bad game IMO

I haven't had it long enough to say top five, but I recently picked up Capitalism Plus and Capitalism 2 and have been playing them basically nonstop for <looks at calendar>...

Ummm...it's June? Really???

Good games.

Someone put forward some honorable mentions, so I thought I'd add my own to the thread:

1. Bioshock: Infinite - Simply awesome!
2. TES: Skyrim
3. Galactic Civ III - Another great game
4. Silent Storm 1 and 2
5. Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 - with expansions, now remastered with better graphics. I'm hoping they do the same with Icewind Dale.

And a couple of stinkers:

1. Space Engineers - Boring!
2. Garry's Mod - Can't figure it out, therefore boring.
3. Doom 3
4. Fractured Space - Glad I didn't pay for that one. (Free to play alpha. Zzzzz)

Alpha Centauri (assuming it counts as "Not Civilization")
Shogun
Europa Universalis III
Victoria II
Caesar III

[if Alpha Centauri gets disqualified: Pirates]

What's so bad about Doom 3?

Regards

Well, a lot actually. Extreme darkness to the point where I could hardly see anything, an insanely difficult targeting system that was too sensitive to mouse movement, and several rooms that I kept getting stuck in and couldn't get out of.

All in all, I just didn't get the "Just one more demon..." feeling that I got out of the first few chapters of Doom. It just wasn't fun for me.

GalCivIII OTOH, definitely rocks, good mention. Mod community is busy as hell too.

My problem with any Doom past the first one was that it did feel like "just one more demon." The original wasn't groundbreaking (Wolfenstein) but it was at least fresh. By the time they got to Doom 2 there were other games expanding the territory, and in that expanding territory there was really no need for a rerun. By Doom 3 there was so much available in the FPS genre that just another demon shooter was dead and stinkin'.

If I were to say anything negative about GalCiv III its that sometimes it feels a bit too much like Civilization. I tend to get a little bored with it rather quickly, which is not fair, as it's a great game in its own right.

The problem with Doom 3 was that it was such a departure from the first three games (Doom, Doom 2, and Final Doom). The first three were fun, campy, and a just a riot to play, especially in "God mode". It was a great way to release tension after work. :)

Doom 3 took this dark turn, and tried to be more frightening than fun. It left me cold (in addition to the problems I noted earlier).

The Doom reboot looks like it might be fun, though. I think I'll pick it up when it goes on sale.

Lemon - GOG has a EE version of Icewind Dale 1. I'm sure one will eventually come out for 2, but it appears Beamdog has had some issues with it.

1. Arcanum of Steamworks and Magic Obscura
2. TES 3: Morrowind
3. Planescape Torment
4. HOMM3
5. Baldur's Gate 2
6. Fallout 2

Now that I see the list, it seems that I have stuck in 1998 - 2002. :D

I saw what you did, there, mighty penguin ! :D

I go :
- Starcraft : Broodwar (can't play it but love it)
- Shogun Total War (2000 edition ; can play it)
- HOMM 3 (can't play it)

Haven't played any other games in ages. Baldur, sure. Morrowind, sure. Ages ago.

In no particular order:

-Planescape Torment
-Baldur's Gate
-Baldur's Gate II
-Icewind Dale I
-Witcher I

Having just bought Pillars of Eternity, that may jump into the list as well, but it's too early to tell.
