England my fav civ to play but I tend to go tradition for the amazing early growth bonuses and then beeline to navigation to get those SOL's out early. Once you have them out it's easy pickings for the domination victory, especially combined with longbowmen.

Use the two early spies to steal and catch up on military tech while heading toward navigation.

PS. and I do like my GL and also the extra bonus for taking the relevant pick in exploration. Also try to take god of the seas pantheon for the extra production.

You should make sure to get as many longbow men as you can afford. They are awesome in their age and they keep their range bonus when promoted. You can rule with an army of longbow men and ships of the line. Throw in a couple melee units to actually capture the cities and you are golden.
