No Gold on Rivers and Ocean - I'm stuck -80 GPT - Help!

I'm playing Shoshone. I got lucky, and early on, with help of these awesome pathfinders, I early killed off all the 5 other Civs on my continent. I have 10 cities connected total. I'm currently researching currency. But as I'm -88 GPT (resulting in 0 science but interestingly units are not disbanded nor buildings) and I will never get it until I can get a Great Scientist.

What really sux about BNW is that THERE IS NO WAY TO MAKE UP FOR THAT THERE IS NO LONGER GOLD FROM RIVERS AND COAST/OCEAN. 2 trade routes bringing in only some 10 GPT is what I will have all through the next 1000 years as I have to wait for other CIV's getting advanced enough to contact me. At which point I'll be 1000 years behind in science. Pretty realistic actually thinking of north America. The others are gonna come with riflemen while my most advanced units are horsemen and swordsmen.

What do I do?

Thank you for all your tips. I've tried many of them already wasting much time on all cities set to gold and unhappiness leading to a status quo in science & gold. For those interested I posted a bunch more screenshots later in this thread: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=12627196#post12627196

After some thinking and listening to your good advice this is the crazy(?) plan!

Start deleting units. If you have a massive army and massive debt, that's really the only thing you can do. I'm not sure how you managed to paint yourself into such a corner, but I have done similar, on occasion :D

Other things would be to set as many citizens as possible to +GPT tiles/specialist slots.

edit: or I suppose if you have any CS on your bloody continent of death, you could donate units to them. That might help you, depending on what type of CS they are. Certainly better than outright deleting them.

Do you have a few screenshots/savegame of your current situation? I've been in tight cash situations before but this sounds really...wow.

What are all your expenses leading to -80 gpt?

It is kind of your fault for killing off everyone else, but I still can't get over that amount. Get gold from working luxuries, build markets, etc. But seriously, what are your expenses? Disband units or sell buildings if you have to, I guess, but how do you get to 80?

I'm guessing you have lots of conquered cities with lots of buildings in them?

And lots of improvements and lots of workers and not a single trade route most likely.
Build cargo ships (ideally) or caravans ASAP and send them to the best yield they can reach gold wise (city states will do). Slot all Specialist slots that produce gold and open gold producing or enhancing policies. Conect the largest cities with the capital can help too, especially if you got Machu.

Yeah, I forgot about city-states. Even with all the civs gone, there should still be city-states.

Raze marginal cities, establish connections, grow them large and for now trade with CS, if you have tradition garrison your cities and maybe even build some TPs. How many cities did you end up with?

My units are stationed in cities when not out fighting barbarians. I had all cities set to gold focus but that made it worse as there's no growth. How do I post a screenshot? It asks for URL?

I have done all of that already and it gets worse. I'm trying to build more cities to connect to capital and to get the only remaining gold producing tiles on my continent. I can't advance in science so any option there is impossible. I'm gonna get a free scientist when completing Liberty, then I can finally start building markets. I don't think it'll solve the problem. Only trade with others will do that. I'm an empire builder and this update is terrible for my game style.

Ok as you can see it's the roads that are killing you, then buildings. You have Agaisika and te moak at size one but connected with roads, ouch. Not to mention Multiple roads near Rio. Get your workers deleting them asap. I assume there is even more roads north out of view.

I see you are building things that will cost more maintenance like water mill or colossea. And no trade routes with CS. Garrisoning only works if you have appropriate tradition policy, is that the case?

Next time don't wipe them so fast, make sure you have more trade route partners and are closer to discovering astro. It is doable, I played with Shoshone as my first game and did a domination win on immortal but I did not eliminate them, just took caps and valuable cities and they continued to trade with me.

Too many workers! You can safely delete some of those. You're going to have to raze cities, too.

There's also a lot of superfluous road just sitting around the middle of nowhere, you can start deconstructing that . . . idk, depending on the difficulty, that seems like a difficult situation to recover from. Would take many turns to stabilize.

Not that many, don't delete workers until they remove roads and even then just spam TPs. I assume it's marathon or epic speed. Just take your time, cities will grow, then reconnect them, prebuild roads to one turn of completion etc, same with buildings. And don't kill the cash cows next time. Please let us know how it went.

Your city connections are losing you money, not gaining it. As a general rule of thumb, assume one tile of road per one population in the non-capital city if you want to at least break even. So you either need to remove roads or grow your cities (or disband cities).

Unit maintenance: Just want to check, but you have Oligarchy, right?

More importantly, though, why don't you have trade routes with those city-states?

If all workers were kept from the AIs, then there are even more off-screen, which is what appears to have happened. Deconstruction is instantaneous, no? So at some point it becomes cumbersome to have workers leapfrogging eachother to delete road. But, of course, as you said, he needs to keep some of them around for the job.

You could also pop a golden age with that Great General, if that wasn't changed in BNW. I never really bothered to check as it wasn't an idea until now, hehe.

Yeah I would keep one worker per city delete rest, but if there is plenty of unimproved land just eat their upkeep, they will pay it back. Just stop digging and as you said bulb GS for currency or guilds, you have disable army see if you can do a CS extortion tour with it, just walk all of them to each CS that is not providing benefits or has quest you will complete soon and squeeze the cash out of them.

That has not been an option since vanilla.

Just goes to show you how much I war. Wow, I can't believe I never realized that change. I usually just station the few GGs I get with the few armies I ever keep

A good rule of thumb I use for roads is that I only build roads if the distance is less tiles than the amount of pops. Roads actually are a bit more complicated than that, but this is a rule of thumb I use and it works quite well.
Other situations might warrant different consequences (for instance to get troops to the front).

Edit:
Oh, I see Louis already said that. I really should read the whole thread before I reply ><
