Renderer Error

I think I found a fix. It worked for me, even when none of the other suggestions so far have been useful.

Open the Civ5 folder in My Games.
Open GraphicsSettingsDX11.ini
Set "LeaderTextureReduction = 2"
Save document.
In-game, reduce leader quality to anything other than the highest setting.

4) Set Leaderhead=1 in config.ini (this actually worked, but was extremely immersion-breaking)

If my suggestion didn't work, consider trying some of the others above. Good luck!

I reduced the LeaderTextureReduction and the Leaderhead as well to be sure. So far it is working normally except when I go to a diplomacy screen I do not see the leader but rather see just grey with the diplomacy options. Doesnt bother me but just felt like I should state that. If anything changes I will keep you posted of course. This sort of thing would not have happened back in Civ IV I tell you what. Now that was a Civ game.

PS: still doesnt work. Lasted a bit longer but will still randomly crash.

Hi, I'm also having the same problem. Sometime it crashes on the game loading screen, sometimes after a few turns and sometimes after a leader screen.

I've tried turning leader and FOW quality right down
Turned Vsync on/off
Updated drivers to latest edition (clean install)
Uninstalling and reinstalling game

And various other settings in the game/ nVidia control panel.

It's really annoying, I've owned this game for months now and I've never been able to play it.

DX9 doesn't work either, I get the menu overlay, but the actual map is all black.

I have the same problem. It's an overheating problem that only occure during large and huge maps. The GPU goes babanas, with the fan running like crazy. On normal size maps is everything ok, with little use of the GPU.

I haven't played much the last six months, but never had these issues before that. Then I could play the huge world mods with no problems.

I also have the problem reported in other topics, where the game stops responding when approched by other leaders.

I have an AMD Radeon HD 6900 series card with the latest drivers.

Just to confuse the issue, I upgraded all my fans and heatsinks (power supply, graphics fan and cpu fan) as well as upgrading my processor (which was the weak point in my machine) and I still have the odd "render error" message.

Still troubleshooting this and will shout if I can find a solution.

Seems to be affecting both single player and MP and all map sizes but only sporadically.

Same problem here! and I'm playing tiny map!!! i5 2.5 GHz, GT 630M-2GB, 6GB RAM. And the heat is not even warm, (and I play Sim 3 with all eps, which is hot like BBQ, but still runs OK!)

Ever sense BNW my game locks up forcing me to force a re-start of my system or it'll just reboot my system for me. Playing Win7 x64 with DX11 option. Anyone else? Any ideas what to do? This has sorta sullied the fun of a new expansion.

EDIT 1: Wanted to add that when I try to launch the game in Admin mode I can't. If I use the launcher.exe and click the DX11 option it just reloads the launched saying DX11 "is not supported on this platform" and get the same message if I do it with the DX11.exe

EDIT 2: So setting the games priority to high or realtime keeps from having to reboot but now getting "FGXRebderer11::present failed hr=DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED. Driver failure." Anyone have any ideas? The game is playable but in small chunks, 15-90 minutes seems to be when the crashing happens. A big range, but that's what it seems to be.

Lowered the leader details down from high to medium. That was 4 hours ago, not a single crash. Looks like this might be a good solution or attempt to try out.

I would also recommend turning off the GPU Decode option in your video settings if your driver is resetting.

I'd run into this DEVICE_REMOVED error a couple times in G&K, but since getting BNW I can barely play 5 or 10 minutes without the crash.

Following the advice here, I turned all my graphic settings to low and turned off anti-aliasing. I can now play for about an hour at a time, but have to suffer through horrible graphics. And crashing every hour is still unacceptable.

This is incredibly frustrating. I never have problems with ANY other game.

Have you turned off GPU texture decode as well? Thanks.

Could I see your DXDIAG? I apologize if you've already posted it earlier in the thread.

Could I see your DXDIAG? I apologize if you've already posted it earlier in the thread.

I'll try to post it when I get home tonight.

I did pull my computer apart last night and blow out all the dust. It was caked on pretty thick over the heat sink, fans, and vents. I was then able to play all last night without a crash, though I haven't tried turning the graphics settings back up yet. Could all the dust be causing the gpu to overheat?

Anyway, thanks for all your help. Too often, problems and posts like these just get ignored.

I got the CIV V gold edition and brave new world today in the steam sale. I am also getting this render error message. I am certain I have played CIV V on this computer without any expansions in the past and I didnt I have this problem. I have tried lowering all the graphic settings and it seemed to help as I managed about 40 minutes of gameplay before i got the error. Just tried again and crashed straight away, any help would be appreciated. I have an nvidia graphics card and will attach the dxdiag.

I have been getting this error ever since I installed Brave New World:
Spoiler :

It always happens right before a leaderhead loads, but not consistently. I have tried setting my video options for leaderheads to minimum, but this does not seem to work. If I am correct, at the minimum video option, the leaderheads should be static, but my leaderheads still move even after I have restarted the game.

Well, everything is ok now. I have an ASUS EAH 6970 card, and installed the latest drivers from the ASUS page. I can't remember what version it was, but it didn't fix anything. So, i reinstalled the newest drivers from AMD again, and voila... Everything is fine! Temperature is ok, and now I've played for many hours with EVERYTHING on full. I've played the last few hours on a huge map, and the machine is acting just fine. This leads me to believe this is a driver problem as I did nothing with the Civ-files! :king:

I get this same error just a couple of turns into the game, either on a leader scene, or during another players turn.
I am using Gold edition and Brave New World with leader scenes set to minimum.
I've tried starting in windowed mode, setting performance mode to max and increased fan speed to 60% all with no luck.
I've also updated and reinstalled my drivers. This problem started when I upgraded to windows 7.

What worked for me was turning off the leader heads and reducing the graphics settings. At first I reduced everything to minimum and I've been slowly upping one at a time. They are all now on medium levels.

I'm now in the middle of my third game since I last had the issue so I'm quite sure that it's resolved for me. The minimal graphics are not too good but the medium ones but, IMO, much better than crashing every hour or so.

I recently added a new graphics card, and I'm having similar problems, although they seem to be occurring far more frequently than most. Something similar also occurs in dx9 mode, however in this mode the screen stops or blacks out for a moment and then return, but as I have gone on further in the game, they have been occurring more and more frequently. Please let me know if you have any recommendations, as I have been loving the game since I got BNW, but can hardly play it like this. Thanks.
