How to catch up on science?

I'm currently 5% behind the leader in literacy(science) and I can't seem to catch up. I'm building all science buildings as I can and doing research agreements, but is there something I'm missing? I play as Rome on king

I play Immortal now (and I find it incredibly hard) but I was stuck on King for months, these are the most common mistakes I made and that I would advise you to check out:

>Building wonders instead of buildings/units
>No scouting, few discovered Civs/City states (means fewer quests, trade routes, money)
>Not assigning specialists because I felt building stuff quicker was better than specialists
>Delaying National College until way after Turn 150, building it anywhere I had a free space, rather than checking where my Science is the highest; mountain&observatory etc.
>Neglecting science buildings for building combat units
>Having too few/too many cities; waiting too long for new cities- if you have only 2 cities at turn 200 and you are not warring, you are in an uncomfortable position
>Research techs based on the next step only, not planning ahead
>In general: not knowing what techs bring which boni and which buildings; not really knowing what a building does, etc

^ One note about the National College that kind of popped into my head, that you may want to think about. The NC does not benefit from observatories. Observatories give a 50% boost to the base science output of the city. The NC does the same thing. That means the NC should go to which ever city will have the largest base science. The capital gets a lot of bonuses other cities do not, to grow very tall. Tradition gives growth bonuses to the capital, CS's give bigger growth bonuses to the capital. This usually means the capital will remain the best for the NC. Your expansion city will have to be really good, to be worth the NC. The one thing that does favor using a city by a mountain over a capital that doesn't have one, is if you are planting GS's, it will get extra benefits from observatories as well, if by a mountain.

Can you upload a saved game for us to look at? Otherwise we can only guess :)

bison21 had some good bullet points. A few more I can think of.

* too much production and not enough growth.
* how big are your cities and how much science are they pumping out? how many cities do you have?
* how is your happiness doing? Are you doing quests for the CS to keep them friendly or allied?
* what does your policy selection look like? Did you skip rationalism?

Anyway, it would be easier if you uploaded a few saves for us like your current save and one around 1/3 and 1/2 of the game.

I'm ok now I'm about to win a domination victory if I manage to capture Berlin. I think the problem is just that I had to waste so much in building units

For a Domination game, there is no requirements to be the tech leader. All you need are the key techs as quickly as possible to get and maintain military superiority. Getting an early NC does help with the beeline to those key techs - after that, it's a matter of jumping to the next beeline and having gold for alliances, bribes and upgrades.

You can lag a domination game to the point that you get stalled out. I get that on deity sometimes. I.e. You can be at war with AI, be behind in every tech, relying on defensive terrain bonus to keep your units alive; and the AI you're at war with isn't even the leader. Not good. Spies can help, one can hope...

almost always the problem is city size.. you're probably working mines to build things faster at the expense of citizen growth.. instead of choosing production focus and letting the game decide what tiles are worked you should manually select which tiles to work.. and these tiles should be mostly food oriented.. your cities will grow faster, your science will improve, and as a result you will ultimately have more citizens to work both food AND production tiles..

some key techs to focus on getting as early as possible are philosophy (to build national college) and civil service (gives +1 food from river farms)

when you get universities up place the citizens working mines into the specialist slots.. build gardens and national epic which will increase the rate great scientists are produced.
