Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

The limitations on search time has made me give up so here are my questions:

All these questions pertain to my DS version and the fact I bought the game without an instruction manual.

BFC - I see in our info center, that courthouses give you the BFC, is that because courthouses produce culture, or is culture independent of BFC?

How can i see my own units statistics? The only way I've come across is by building one in a city, I can't seem to get any type of help screen that will display his stats outside of that.

So my jaguar warrior appears to have the same stats as a normal warrior. What am i missing here? Is there anywhere I can see the stats online of the special units?

I keep seeing talk of "armies with 3" and I'm kinda confused on what this means. When I'm producing in a city, do I want to wait around until I have 3 units so I can combine them or something?

Is there anyway to know what I'm attacking when I attack a city? Does this depend on a promotion or something? Are there promotions?

I apologize if some of these answers are right in front of my face, I did about 4 searches before posting this.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I can answer a few questions here :
1)if you build a courthouse you get extra working tiles and if you build a magna carta then the courthouses produce culture.
2)statistics change. for example in battle an archer will have 3 attack if its in your capital (50%) but it does not show your "upgrades/statistics" out of battle.
3)"Special Units" are just normal units that are named and decorated differently to normal units.
4)Basically you have 3 warriors all on the same tile and you get the OPTION to "Form Army" this makes the units stronger in numbers wise so a singlar warrior has 1 attack, however with an army you get 3 attack.
5)Galley's early on get a free militia that are good reconaissance units as they have "Scout" and this enables the player to see the enemy's cities strongest unit. Units can also achieve Scout when becoming Elite. NOTE : it wont tell how many units are dug in but the size of the enemy's flag seems to denote this with a small flag a few units are posted there and a big flag indicates more enemys you can shake a stick at.
Hope this has helped you Boozie :)

Thank you. That was very helpful. I was slightly let down to learn no UU exist, but it didn't seem right that not everyone had any listed on the site.

Without going for a culture victory, it seems like there's a lot of pointless emphasis on culture since it doesn't affect your cross nor what resources you do/don't have access to.

I understand 'flipping' but overall I can't see too much value in it.

I found the thread with the manual, that was very helpful.

Another thing I'm wondering about is great leader/barracks. Will they stack? Description just says they both come out as veterans.

Why does it list "starting bonus" and "ancient bonus" if you start the game in the ancient era? Does ancient era not start til you found a city or something?

Looks like Stephanovitch hit all your questions from your earlier post, but highlight them if there's anything you're still confused about.

Culture isn't very important in this game. I usually don't worry about it at all. Technology and population are what's important. Culture is just nice to have, not really necessary at all. You can get a few extra great people out of having culture and you can occasionally convert enemy cities without the need of a great artist, but overall working culture is pretty weak. So basically, you're right.

Yes, the GL and barracks stack. If you have both, any military units you produce in that city will be elite and get extra bonuses.

Starting bonus and ancient bonus? Who knows? Maybe so you don't have two ancient bonuses but still start the game with two bonuses? Maybe there was some plan for a pre-ancient option? Hard to say, but there's not really a difference between "ancient" and "start."

I know this isnt really the place to ask but I can't find anywhere that I can ask : Ive played Civ Rev for a while now and I was wondering which is the best Civ game thats

A) Compatable with Windows Vista.
B) Alot of Fun.
C) In-depth and adaptable.
D) No too expensive.

I am really confused on which one I should purchase next.

Well, if you want to get the full evolution of Civ 4, then you want to have Beyond the Sword. Since it technically is an expansion pack, you need to have original (or "vanilla") Civ 4 as well, as it uses the core files from original Civ 4.

Civ 4 was great, Warlords added the concept of vassal states and I think added unique buildings (to go with the existing unique units from original Civ 4). Also added trebuchets as a new unit, and new Civs and leaders. Beyond the Sword (BTS) made even larger changes ... a whole espionage element, etc.

addendum: didn't get a chance to finish this earlier ... with espionage, you don't see the graphs until you have enough espionage points, which you make like science, gold, and culture. Also the Apostolic palace and a "religious" victory (game calls it diplomatic still ... like a medieval version of the UN). Lots of new modern units, and seige no longer kill troops completely, just damage up to a point. I think most people who have all of them play BTS most often ... exceptions include to play the XOTM games in the other versions, and a few people who have said that Warlords is their favorite version.

So if you want BTS you need original Civ and BTS ... In which case you almost might as well get Civ complete which has all 3 versions in one pack plus Civ 4 colonization.

Simple question really. On Civ 4 you could roll the mouse wheel to zoom in and out, you could zoom all the way out to a globe view. Is this possible in Civ rev?? Cant seem to find out how.

Just joined the forum and wanted to say Civilization 4 is the greatest game ever made. Currently im unable to play it as my PC is broken. I bought Civ Rev for PS3 to see me through till autumn, when ill be buying a new laptop especially for Civ 5. So far Civ Rev seems pretty good, i was always dubious as i heard there was so much missing compared to Civ 4, but im pleasantly surprised.

thank you DV I will now prowl the game stores in search ;) Civ Rev has a similiar feature to Civ 4 yes pressing RB (360) R2 (PS3) down completely zooms the camera out and press it lightly to zoom in. :)

Just so you know what to look for ... http://www.civfanatics.com/store

Looks like you could get Civ 4 plus BTS for just over half the price of Civ 4 Complete, if you don't care about warlords or colonization.

My questions are with respect to the DS version in particular:

1. Any way to extort money from the AI for their unescorted settlers, like they do to me?

2. How does game of the week work? Do I need to keep the wifi on? Does it submit the game when I finish it? Can you only view the scores of people whose friend codes you know?

3. Is there any way to see how much culture a city has, or your civ? I see in the city screen it tells you how much culture you're earning per turn, but is that all there is?

4. Is it really true that you can't upgrade units unless you get Leo's workshop or are playing as the Germans? I'd love to be able to pay gold to upgrade my obsolete units.

Thanks in advance, for any answers. :)

1. Nope. Just take the settler, then ask for peace next turn and you'll usually get it.

2. I don't know about the DS version, but on xbox I do need to be connected to xbl for the entire game. No idea what the DS leaderboard is like.

3. On the xbox version I can get a summary screen that shows my current culture accumulation in respect to how far I've got to go to get the next GP. I was just looking at the DS guide and I don't see anything like that. Maybe there's no such thing. I dunno. The other thing that may be important is your overall culture level, i.e. sophisticated, civilized, uncivilized, filthy (it's something like that). You can't flip a city of a civ that has a higher culture level than you. This is indicated on the console version by the comedy/drama faces on the diplomacy menu. Comedy = good culture, drama = bad culture. Not sure what that's all about. According to the DS guide, that's on the diplomacy screen. It'll say something like "Citizens are SOPHISTICATED."

4. Yup, that's true. Those are the only way to upgrade units. You can beef up your old units with naval support though. Like a horseman army isn't too good against pikemen (9-18), but throw in a cruiser fleet and now you're in better shape (22-18).

Thanks elthrasher.

1. Fair enough.
2. I did a warrior rush on the easiest difficulty on GOTW last night (took me 15 mins or so) to see what would happen when the game ended, and nothing happened. :( I assume there's no support for the DS version - it's just a map you can download and nothing more.
3. I hadn't noticed that. It's weird that the diplomacy screen pretty much makes the Who's Winning screen completely redundant. The only thing the Who's Winning screen does that the Diplo screen doesn't is that it sorts the leaders for each victory type. You're quite right that on the Diplo screen it says "Citizens are DISGUSTING" etc. I'll have to figure out what each level's label is. What is this DS guide you're referring to, btw?
4. Yeah but in my last game I was using beefed up catapults trying to attack a civ in the modern age. Even with cruiser support and more than 2 to 1 ratio most of the time, I was still losing every single catapult. I assume there is some factor in the combat odds that looks at the tech level of your units. I don't know how it works though.

The DS guide is available here: http://downloads.2kgames.com/civilization/revolution/Civilization_Revolution_Expanded_DS_Manual.zip

Do you mean you lost several catapult armies at 2-1 or do you mean you saved and reloaded it and lost each time? In the former case, that's really bad luck. You should usually win at 2-1 and if you lose at 2-1, you should almost always win next time. If you were saving and reloading, the reason for that is the odds for random seed are determined at the start of the game, rather than when an action happens. So if you save and reload the game and make exactly the same moves, you'll get the same results. This is sort of useful for maximizing a GotW run, but otherwise doesn't matter much.

Few more noob questions:

1. Do you get to steal a tech when capturing cities like in the old Civ games?

2. I read a guide talking about legion rushing, but don't understand why horsemen weren't used in their place for the quicker movement. Is it a matter of attack/hammers ratio?

3. Can someone explain retreat to me? If I retreat do I like forfeit extra xp to the defender? If so, is it a bad idea to retreat unless it's some crazy unit I don't want to lose?

1) Yes you do I love the idea! I have always loved stealing monarchy and democracy due to the advantages early on :)
2) I really dont know seems stupid to do legions and not Horsies
3) Retreat is relatively simple once you retreat your enemy gets an upgrade and you remain but possibly weakened... I heard rumours of a trick to retreating. I thinks its like this : Warrior has 3 men yes? so once the second one is struck down you retreat or something... doesnt seem too effective but hey... retreating is useless against Aztec Archers they are always built really quickly and have autoheal so if you did take 2 horsmen armys they would die :D Hope this has kinda helped but...
I have question for Elthrasher : When is Anarak/GGrayson making some more videos i liked them very much and did give me a few helpful strategies which I hope I shall be using in MP.

Hold it No umm Boozie your first question is that about as soon as you take the city for example I take Alexander's City and I instantly get Democracy if I have not already learned it HOWEVER you dont always get tech you do get gold and sometimes gold and tech. <<< If thats the answer you were looking for... quite confused now :D

The thing about legions is they are 10 hammers while horsemen are 20 hammers, so you can build twice as many legions. If you're going for 1-2 armies early in the game and want to attack your enemy, horsemen are clearly better because it takes too long for the legions to get there. But later on if you have to bust some archer armies or something, then legions are better because you could deliver them by galleon or something and in any case, speed is no longer the essence. You need power. Typically it takes three legion armies to take down an archer army, but of course this doesn't work on Aztecs.

There are various strategies where you try to get 5-10 legion armies quickly and then some delivery method, usually either a boat drop or you run a settler near your enemy, settle, then build a road. Legions are also pretty good for defense. It's better to kill an attacking army than watch them retreat and try another of your cities.

Retreating will sometimes give the defender an upgrade, but not always.

Grayson is visiting France right now but will be back in a week or so and will probably start posting more videos. That is if they don't imprison him over there for all the horrid things he's said about their civilization!

Ah the legion rush technique seems to make more sense now :p It is true though that the french are only good for one thing : retreating... cant wait for new vids and ill try and sort out my google/youtube accounts in time to subscribe.

Okay, thanks for the responses. I figured it probably just boiled down to hammers, but I wasn't sure.

As a new player to CivRev, but not Civ, is it a bad idea for me to plan around early aggression? (not necessarily an early domination victory) From what I've read it seems pretty simple to spam cities, gain a tech advantage and just romp your enemies later in the game. Just wondering how difficult it will be for me to take some early action.

Early aggression is a popular way to go. Horsemen armies are the most common ancient era attack. If you can reach an AI city before 2000 BC, it's pretty much yours. Kill your neighbor and now your yard is twice as big. That's the general idea.
