"Crashing" when loading saves

The game is usually stable when it actually runs, but quite often it doesn't work to load save games. Usually I load them from the main menu as it's faster and I think more reliable then, but lately I've had several crashes when loading from the main menu too. I wrote "crashes" because the game doesn't actually crash, but it stops responding. Usually with a loading bar that doesn't move, but the recent one didn't even get that up. I clicked on the button to load the save, and then nothing. Screens then look like below.

I do play the game in Linux via PlayOnLinux, and I'd really appreciate some help in solving this issue. I use Linux Mint 17.1 Cinnamon.



Both these errors occurred when loading a game from the main menu.
