WWII - The Strength of Wills Part Two

This looks great. Downloaded and installed perfectly - I got the RED modpack v 36 from the link, Steam has v27. I loaded all the main civs to to see which I wanted to play (GB, Ger, USA and USSR). Germany looks hard with -99 gpt. GB has such a spread out empire and USA is so isolated. I think I will try Russia. I'll let you know how it goes. I will someday take up the challenge of GB - but not yet :)

OK, something is wrong. Playing as Russia, Got to turn 81 and tried to invade Turkey but I can't - the game acts like we have a Peace Treaty in effect. I Denounced them the turn before. Very strange. As a test, I invaded Germany without a Denouncement, worked fine.

Just what I thought I have Turkey in permanent peace with everyone. They were neutral, but I don't mind changing it. I will post an update ASAP. It will be on steam and I'll post the link here.

New version V.18 can be found here. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=575798344

Humm, nothing wrong with Turkey being neutral - I would add that in the intro/description somewhere.

I tried to get open borders with Turkey so I could get my (small) fleet out of the Black Sea, but they were having none of it. I occupied Baltic States, Poland and Eastern Europe and didn't feel ready to take on Germany so I thought I would go after Greece, and maybe Italy. Maybe make Turkey really friendly so they will agree to open borders.

Russia really is really OP. I have some ideas on nerfing Russia I will post later.

Russia is OP. Here are some ideas.

First turn- Yikes! 16 cities, no improved resources and no workers! So I built a worker in every city (yes every one.) I also took Citizenship, I can get a worker right away, then finish the Liberty tree for a GG or GE (or GS maybe). It's tempting to finish Tradition but without faith the GP bonus is useless. Honor is also very tempting.

For Ideology I took Party Leader and Socialist Realism. With those I can pay my workers and grow cities without too much trouble.

So turn 1 - 30 happiness, 23 gpt and a worker in Moscow - a good start.

The situation so far (turn 81 - October 1928) 717 Science, 85 happiness and 564 gpt (in a GA - lots of GAs along the way).

All 7 trade routes are internal building up Moscow, Minsk, Stalingrad (my science city) and others. I don't need more gold.

Mostly done improving resources and getting railroads to all cities (still need to get Rostov and Tbilisi hooked up)

Conquered Baltic States, Poland and Eastern Europe. I will probably invade Germany soon.

Problems - other than the lame AI :)

Too many resources. Scale back the luxury resources. Maybe two of each at most, One might be better and fewer of them. Strategic resources are probably fine.

Start cities with smaller populations. Maybe 4 for Moscow 3 for Leningrad, Kiev and Stalingrad; two for everyone else.

Preselect Ideological Tenets. With 16 cities and a Monument already built in all cities Party Leader and Socialist Realism are OP. Select different ones to start, Make Russia work for those :) One free policy choice should be fine.

Maybe add a a few workers in say Moscow and Leningrad.

If I think of anything else, I'll post it.

Interesting! Thanks for the feedback. I am going to play my own game as Germany. My goal is to see how the Russian AI is. They really need to build tanks. We'll see if they do. In any case it will be awhile before I get to this mod, as I am working on WWI first. So, all the feedback I can get for later use will be very important.

Instead I am going to first play as Russia. I play on King level and I'll take some notes.

Ah, Yes - one more thing, get rid of the barracks in Russian cities, a couple cities start with barracks (I forgot which ones) and can also build Kreposts. Units then get 30 exp to start (Maybe this is on purpose?). I also eventually built Kreposts in all cities - mostly for the tile expansion.

Also, tried v18, still can't invade Turkey. Not to worry, I am putting this aside for now and trying your WWI mod. Probably go with Russia again - should be similar since it's only 30 yrs or so earlier.

You'd have to start a new game. Thanks though, I'll fix the barracks.

Fantastic scenario (I am playing the next-to-newest version). I am playing on Emperor [EDIT: I had written Immortal, because that's what I usually play non-scenarios on, but this was King] as the Nazis (because who doesn't enjoy a turn as the bad guys). It's around turn 175 and I've taken over Norway. Italy is in a stalemate with England and France in the Mediterranean. I've taken over the Baltic States and Russia and I have swallowed up Poland. Greece is gone.

England and America declared war on me about 20 turns ago, and the English fleet is just now harassing Wilhemshaven. My U-boats have handled that problem with ease. France has ignored me so far. That's probably the biggest reason I've been able to conquer the small countries and hold England and Russia off.

Whether I can break Russia on the eastern front remains an open question. I've been killing their massive tank army for about 20 turns and keeping my cities despite close calls, but breaking through will be harder.

I'd upload a couple screen shots but I have not figured out how.

Update. It's around turn 260, and I am done playing because I have conquered London, Paris, and Moscow. I control 10 capitals, almost all of France and England, and half of Russia. There's no point in continuing. Overall, this is a fun scenario. It's complex but not unmanageable. There's time to build up your army. The diplomatic game matters. And it's war on an epic scale.

That said, I have a few suggestions:

The victory condition needs tweaking and the number of turns should be shortened so that the game is worth finishing. For example, instead of 450 turns, 350 would be more than enough, and capture of certain number of capitals, or the key WWII opponents' capitals, should be enough.

England and France ought to have a unique unit. What about a better fighter for the UK and a partisan for France?

If possible, American's code needs to be changed to make it get more involved. By the end of the game there were scores of American ships off its own shores, but it never attacked me with more than a half-dozen ships every few turns.
