SGOTM 04 - Geezers

Hi AgedOne,

From my side it would ok if you would join us.

@Harbourboy : my skills creating something like an avatar is, ehm, quite limited.

How would you guys feel about taking on a complete newcomer to SGOTM in your next outing?

I'm quite happy for you to join the team. You'll need to complete the signup process in the signup thread before AlanH starts assigning team members. IIRC the signup thread also has links to the relevant rules. In general the rules are the same as the GOTM rules with a few specific SGOTM rules.

AgedOne, we do have some very promising players very high on the waiting list (and a very long waiting list it is too).

But seeing as you have designed your name and avatar specifically to match The Geezers' theme, how can we say no?

Hey! I'll take that as positive feedback :crazyeye:
I'd have to have a matching sig . . . something like "Extremely ancient Geezer".
And if it's not covered by copyright, might have a new avatar: View attachment 155567.

Or perhaps it should be View attachment 155568.

I will, of course, apply via the appropriate channels. (Hope I get assigned to the 'right' team)

You should mention in the sign-up thread that you like to join us, otherwise maybe all the other promising players will do that before you.

Hi guys.
Looks like I'm all fully signed-up and official.
While we wait for the team threads to appear, I'm off to begin my pre-season training. As a rookie, I need to ensure I've got enough stamina to last the course.
Think I'll have a go at that trial 'Walking with Barbarians' game, and try to get my head round the weird situation we'll be facing.

I sent a PM to DynamicSpirit asking whether he likes to join us. That would be an interesting team.

I'm afraid I've had to reply 'no' due to lack of free time :-( (I'm even starting to miss some normal normal GOTM/WOTMs now...). Shame as it would've been good to be back in the team.

Commiserations on your result this time - I've been dropping in to peer at the team thread from time to time.

And as for Thrallia - you traitor :mischief: :)

lol indeed, it appears that I was hasty...but as has been stated before...the young are hasty, and as the youngest geezer...I was too hasty(was too hasty a couple times while playing too)

Now I have to figure out a new nick for myself, at least, until I end up in Geezers again.

:wavey:
Just dropping in to say hi to my new team mates

Thankyou mark for the invite, though I'm not sure you realise what a noob you have on board

A special thankyou to AgedOne who removes the threat of me becoming the oldest geezer (I still have some months this side of 50 :old: )

re my CIV experience
I played about 6 or 7 games of CIV in past 6 months including GOTM16 coping with up to monarch (I have to agree with whoever it was that stated they feel most comfortable on settler). I'm thinking of trying GOTM20, but a practice game with similar settings on immortal is proving beyond me (struggling to hold off stacks of tanks with grenadiers and cannons) - I think a SS loss will soon put me out of my misery, though I do now have most land.
I struggle with understanding all these slingshots, get shafted on diplomacy (current game been practically AW last 500 years - what's this -10 for making arrogant demands bit? ) and have still to get my head around city specialisation (I've read articles, but have difficulty putting it into practice).
So I expect to learn a lot and ask your patience and understanding if I ask obvious questions and go slowly as I hate making mistakes  .

Hi Andronicus,

We are quite noobfriendly here.:) As you can see we are second in posts, so we discuss a lot usually. At least in that category we will finish second. :crazyeye:
In SGOTM01 I was a total noob. Just finished one game on prince before participating. It is not that much different to Civ3. You will get the hang of it soon. I am quite sure about this.

I hope the team threads will open soon.

And now he's the captain :crazyeye:

Welcome aboard Andronicus.

Don't worry about being a newbie. We're all certified experts at the game, :scan: so you'll probably learn lots from us. We're all so good that we usually don't try to win anymore because we're sick of winning all the time. We find losing to be a more unusual and interesting experience.

And you should definitely be worried about making mistakes, because we'll come down like a ton of bricks on you if you so much as move one worker SE instead of S. Just do everything perfectly (like we always do) - and you'll be fine!

I hope you're practising right now. I know that we all are. I assume you have also given up your day job for the duration of this game. It's the minimum commitment we expect.

Hi Andronicus. As long as you don't mind being known as the "Slightly less Ancient Rookie Geezer". Welcome! :salute:

I have my birthday tomorrow, so I'll have entrenched my position as "Severely Ancient Geezer". I'll also have lost a whole load of brain cells by the next time I pop onto these boards. Just hope they won't be the vital two or three that carry my wealth of CIV-ing experience.

Thrallia. Can we trust you over there on the other side? Are you still working undercover for the Geezers ;)

markh. "Regressing Geezer"?

I guess as soon as the team threads for the new game appear, we can all start swapping our experiences from the practice games. I'm having an . . . interesting . . . time with one at the moment. Probably because of some of the weird decisions I've been making 'just to see what happens'.

See you all soon. Back to the studying.

I know what you are practcing. I follow your tries on gmajor 13. :)

See! I am practicing really really hard! I sure hope our strategy involves letting the AI attack our unpromoted spearmen with their triple promoted cavalry, because I've had LOTS of practice at that. It takes a special sort of build up over the preceding 1000 years to pull off that tricky move.

I have also mastered the technique of staying 15 technologies behind the leading AI. Studying all those advanced sciences is just plain nerdy.

I think you took too much from the last SGOTM. :D Do we have to teach you everything from zero again ?

BTW I am trying also on gmajor 13. Two quite good attempts so far.

I like the sound of that! Perhaps in the up-coming game, we should let the barbarians do all the research for us, while we sit back, and rake in the money! :D We not nerdy!
