Best idea since Lebkuchen! (though someone will have to remind me how to do it! Been a while!)
As there was some positive responses to the idea of an IRC channel where you can hang out, ask, answer and dicuss questions related to civ v strategy in real time, here is the new channel:
Network: IRCnet
Channel: #civfanatics

Seems like ages ago I used irc. What is the servername for IRCnet? irc.ircnet.org ???

Well I found the website. Tried to connect several times. Timed out after 60 seconds each time.

Same thing happened to me.
For everyone having problems, this is a fast an easy way:
Download Hexchat, this is your IRC client
Open Hexchat and simply select network ICRnet and your username
After connecting you to the server you can type the command /j #civfanatics and you should be connected to the channel.
