Late game Great Engineers

I recently completed a game as America in which I went for a diplomatic victory. Towards the end of the game my cities were producing many Great Engineers, and I didn't know what to do with them (I think I had four standing around my cities when the game ended). There weren't any wonders to build at this point, and it seemed too late in the game to place down their tile improvements.

What can you do late in the game with Great Engineers when there are no wonders to build? Conversely, what should I have been doing to prevent producing these units and making something more helpful instead?

This was a G+K game. Would the answer be any different in BNW?

Thanks for the help.

Not much you can do. Once you're running a specialist economy, there's a time period when the great people pop out like crazy. The only thing you can do, if you need another kind of GP, is to pull your people from the workshop, factory, windmill slots and wait for the other points to catch up. Usually by that point in the game, though, I don't much need any of the regular great people.

As to what to do with them, I just laid down manufactories around my newer colonies to help them speed up production. I always get Mausoleum, so at least they're worth $100.

Depends how late they are. I would call Neuschwanstein a late wonder but it still has some quite good benefits if you can get it. The ideology Wonders can be quite good as well

There is a marked absence of Wonders from the Industrial age onwards which isn't necessarily a bad thing as at that point in the game I find I have too many things to do already. If you have Freedom it is well worth planting them as there is a tenet that lets you get +4 production from them.
Once you combine that with railroad and other production bonuses they really do shine.

I'm thinking for OP if all Great Wonders are indeed built is for the next game to either play at a higher difficulty level or try to win faster.

As to difference in G&K vs BNW, it was Autocracy that has a fairly late world wonder that's not in G&K at all, but a specialist economy would be going Freedom in BNW. If anything there is one less world wonder you can build since both the existing Statue of Liberty & Kremlin world wonders require an ideology.

There are three world council projects in BNW, but you can't use GE on them. In addition, even going science victory, the 3rd one (International Space Station) is usually skipped.

BNW changes tend to slow down early game progress (no more selling luxuries for 240 gold each to buy settlers; AI requires DOF to give you gold at all and in addition, when mixed GPT and gold are involved, it gives you less gold.) But late game can be faster due to boosts within the ideologies.

Settle manufactories or rush select few late game wonders or use them to build national wonders very fast if you have a large country.

Thanks everyone for the ideas.

This should have been more obvious to me. While the total game production bonus wouldn't be a great as a manufactory placed earlier on, something is better than nothing.

Also a good idea. This game was at Prince difficulty. I'm slowly working my way up in difficulty levels, as I used to play mainly just for the fun of exploring the world (at level 1 difficulty), but now I'm starting to play to understand the strategy and make it more of a challenge (see my previous post).
