Here's an old last-round game from the Atlantic Provinces Championship:

Brian Pentz vs Rick Stewart (Blue Emu)
Atlantic Provinces Championship, Round Six
Closed Sicilian / Ruy Lopez

1. e4 c5; 2. Nf3 d6; 3. g3 g6; 4. Bg2 Bg7; 5. d3 Nc6; 6. c3 e5

The central formation now resembles a closed Ruy Lopez instead of a closed Sicilian.

7. 0-0 Nge7; 8. Nbd2 0-0

Now a "normal" move for White would be something like a4 or Nh4

9. Nc4?! b5; 10. Ne3 Rb8; 11. Nh4 b4; 12. Ng4?!

Not sure what this is supposed to be. A more usual plan would be f4, to which I might have replied f5. White's threat of Nh6+ looks uncomfortable... but no worse than that, since he cannot easily bring any more pieces to bear on my K-side. I decided to just ignore it and continue my Q-side attack.

12. ... bc; 13. bc Qa5; 14. Nh6+ Kh8; 15. Bd2 Ba6; 16. Qc2 c4

Now White's reply 17. d4 seems to leave two pieces hanging after 17. ... ed; 18. cd Nd4; 19. Ba5 Nc2; 20. Rac1 Nd4 threatening both the Knight at h6 and the fork at e2.

17. dc Bc4; 18. Rfd1

Black's position looks quite nice, except for the weak Pawn at d6... but how to make further progress? I decided to complicate the game and disorganize White's pieces... I was already looking forward to the surprise shot on move 19.

18. ... Qa3!?; 19. Bc1 Bb3!?

The game now becomes extremely complicated, and White is tactically handicapped by the exposed position of his Knight on h6.

20. Qd3 Qa4; 21. Re1 Bc4; 22. Qd6 Rfd8; 23. Qc5

White is a Pawn up, but nearly all of his pieces are sitting on the edge of the board. I decided to force the tempo, before he could untangle his pieces.

23. ... Rd1; 24. Nf3 Rc1; 25.Nf7+ Bf7; 26. Rec1 Rd8!

I have only one Rook left, and the b-file is basically useless to me since White can oppose Rooks on it easily. It's not so easy for him to take the d-file away from me.

27. Bf1 Bf6; 28. Qe3 Kg7; 29. Be2 Nc8; 30. Bd1 Qa5; 31. Bb3 Nd6

Now that White has found a decent spot for his Bishop and is ready to oppose Rooks on the d-file, I close the file off with my Knight. I now intend to switch the attack to the K-side... which makes White's following move a very pleasant surprise, saving me the trouble of opening new lines in that sector.

32. h4?! h6; 33. Nd2?! g5!

This move looks rather odd, but I can feed pieces over to the K-side much faster than my opponent can, so the risk seems to be minimal.

34. Nf3 gh; 35. gh Bg6!

I'm actually planning to put the Bishop on h5 and my Knight on g6 (heading for f4)... but first I'd like to lure my opponent into closing the center, which will make my flank attack stronger.

36. Bd5 Ne7; 37. c4 Bh5

Mission accomplished, and now the attack begins.

38. Kh2 Kh7; 39. Kh3?

A time-pressure error leading to a clear loss of tempo, since it's rather obvious that I moved the Bishop to h5 partly in order to clear g6 for the manoever N-g6-f4. White loses two moves, just as my attack is starting to pick up steam.

39. ... Ng6; 40. Rg1 Nf4+; 41. Kh2 Qc7!

Intending to crack open the cluttered diagonal leading to White's King. White's counter-attack now begins, and falls just short of success.

42. Rac1 Rf8; 43. c5 Nb5; 44. Rb1

Pinning the Knight against R-b7... but everything's (barely) under control.

44. ... Nfd5!; 45. ed e4+; 46. d6 Nd6; 47. cd Qd6+; 48. Rg3 Bf3

Now White's counter-attack on my 2nd and 1st ranks looks crushing, but it seems that I've calculated the outcome correctly... he narrowly fails to break through.

49. Rb7+ Be7!; 50. Qa7 Rf7!

The only move. White now threatens mate...

51. Qa8 Rg7!

Defending and counter-attacking at the same time. Again White threatens mate...

52. Rb8 Rg3!

Breaking the attack, and White suddenly runs out of steam.

53. Rh8+ Kg6; 54. Qg8+

No better is 54. Qe8+ Kf6; 55. Rh6+ Rg6 DISCOVERED CHECK.

54. ... Kh5; 55. Qg3 Qg3+; 56. fg Bc5

It still wasn't too late to blunder with 56. ... e3 57. Re8 Bc5; 58 Re5+... but now it's all over.

57. Rg8 Bf2; 58. White Resigns.

A complicated last-round game.

Supposedly my opponent was a USCF expert but who knows online

I don't think an expert player would play 11. Nde7. And I'm sure they would not throw away a piece with 23. Nxe5. Just playing Ne7 and then taking the bishop instead and black is seemingly winning easily with the extra piece.

As for the endgame... not much of an endgame left. Double rooks and play d7. That will force black to put a rook in front of the pawn. You should be able to do just about anything with an extra rook in play.

I don't think an expert player would play 11. Nde7.
I think Nde7 is a standard plan in these type of positions, to goto g6 & gang up on the pawn.

And I'm sure they would not throw away a piece with 23. Nxe5.
Yeah, that move is just terrible. Then again, we were both in some time pressure.

Standard plan eh? Moving a knight from a good central location before developing all your pieces to, after multiple moves, threaten a pawn which can be sufficiently defended. I could be wrong but I don't see it being that hot of a plan. Don't get me wrong, of course it does something but surely there must be at least 5 better moves to chose from.

The knight is not maintainable on that square, it's going to get hit with tempo by c4. There is no way to prevent this (maybe Na5 but that doesn't seem particularly good) & Be7 or Bc5 run into trouble after c4. Feel free to list 5 better moves though, so I can be prepared against them. :p

I don't know about that, after Ba6 the knight can hang out for a while. Per request I put the computer on it (best 16 moves at ply 11) and came up with the following list from best to worse: Bc5, h6, 0-0-0, Rc8, a6, Be7, Rb8, b5, a5, Na5, g6, Rd8, Kf7, Rg8, Bc8, Qc8. Better start preparing...

hmm, surprised at Bc5 being best... I guess it's the one move that Ne7 makes impossible. However after c4 Ne7 (Nb4 here loses a piece as far as I can tell) & maybe a3 (not sure) white seems ok (though I'll acknowledge black is much more active than he was in the actual game).

I'd fire up Fritz but it's chewing up a game right now. After h6 c4 & the knight goes to e7 anyway. After 0-0-0 & c4 knight goes to e7 (or b4 allowing a queenside pawn expansion). After Rc8 I'd have to think for a bit, wouldn't want c4 to be a target later but would probably push anyway to develop my knight (maybe with b6 later).

Perhaps it was a bit inaccurate & passive to play the move right away but I'd hardly call it a blunder. Not a world class move honored in books & magazines by any means but I've certainly seen worse moves by experts.

Got a new best win on chess.com, against a 2143 rated player!

Didn't feel like I did so much to win this one to be honest, he didn't really get the initiative once. His e-pawn became an object for my attack, and he wasn't able to defend it easily with his B on f3 blocking the pawn attack.
Then I advanced my h-pawn, kicked his knight and then took the B to open up the kingside. After that he just seemed to crumble, I swung my queen over there, then my control of the dark-squares allowed my dark-B and rooks to swing over, whilst his pawns obstructed his pieces from defence.

Comments and criticism always welcome, especially on how I played the opening (I never do well in these theme tournaments so it was nice to turn out a good position). I ran it through the chess.com analyser and it threw up 4 inaccuracies, but I know it isn't held in high esteem by some.

He didn't play very well, looks like he was unfamiliar with the opening. b4 and Nf3 weren't very good moves. Then he kept on playing weird moves like Ba1 for example.
As for you, there is a general rule that double fianchetto is almost never a good idea (putting both your bishops on b7 and g7 respectively). Therefore 11...b6 is not a good move. Otherwise you played pretty well.

Beat my first expert in Live OTB Chess (not an official tournament game). Missed some very nice tactical opportunities to win faster that I notieced but miscalculted during the game. Fortunately was able to pull off the win anyway. :) We're playing a match, first to win six games wins (draws discounted)

Thanks, it's not for money or rating points, simply for the joy of playing (and learning). Forgot to mention, George offered me a draw after move 24 but I declined.

Lost my second match game with George fairly badly. Drew the 3rd, so the match is 1-1 (draws discounted).

Here are the games of my most recent Quad tourney (I went 1-2), first game I forgot to add comments for, last two have comments :
