The Civ5 Guide

America does not need the Tradition tree, and can focus more on Liberty and Freedom first.

If you decide not to settle many cities, then America has good synergy with the "monarchy" social policy. They can buy tiles for just 1/4 the price, which changes the price of land from "exorbitant" to "reasonable".

For those who asked, I have converted Trickster7135's posts into pdf format (48 pages)
Current as of Novemeber 1, 2010
I will check back occasionally and update the pdf

Both the Bank and the Museum give two specialist slots, not one.

The Great Library is the best wonder of the Ancient Era, and the best reason to quickly settle a city near any available marble.

You mention the help given by access to marble, gold, and silver in a few places in your excellent guide. Apart from the effect of the Mint building I can't seem to find anything that suggests that these are anything more than just another luxury resource. What am I missing?

A city with a quarried marble tile gets a wonder production bonus. Something like 25 or 33%.

I can't think of any special bonus gold and silver gives except for the mint. Gold does however often appear alone while for example dyes often either doesn't exist at all or come in clusters of 3-4 which can make them less valuable.

It's a 25% wonder production bonus for marble. You should see a notification when your marble has been mined. No other resources give a special bonus. The mint gives an extra 3 gold for every worked gold and silver resource in that city's radius.

I tested by completing a quarry on a marble resource in a city that was building the 'Pyramids' wonder. I did not see any notification. The before and after screen shots do not show any change in production speed.

edit: After I posted I realized the screen shots are not conclusive proof because other game factors may mask the effect. I still have the before and after files and I'll carry out a detailed check on why the production went down from 8.75 to 7. I will post the result.

It's possible the Governor reassigned tiles after you finished the quarry. The governor can be stupid that way (among others). :)

Not half as stupid as the player:blush:.

Don't feel too bad, it took me a minute before I understood what you were getting at. The current wording "Wonder Modifier for the Pyramids" isn't super clear. Changing it to "Wonder modifier from Marble resource" would be a lot more obvious.

I have only been lucky enough to start near marble in a couple of my games. I know that when you capture a city that has marble you get a notification saying that wonder production gets a 25% bonus in that city. I also thought the same applied when it was a city you had settled yourself, but perhaps I was wrong. In any case, the bonus still gets applied.

It should be noted that neither of these promotions provide a bonus while attacking cities, as cities gain no bonuses or penalties from terrain placement

The ideal promotion path for strategic units used for city taking would be: shock 1, shock 2, shock 3, march, medic, siege, blitz, cover 1, cover 2.

Then what's the point to invest in shock vs. drill for city attackers?

LIBRARY - +1 science for every 2 population.
Prerequisites: Writing.
Cost: 80 production.
Maintenance: 1 gold.
Specialists: 2 scientists.
Priority: high.

The library is a very powerful building, and a prerequisite for all science buildings that come after it. Libraries are unique in that instead of simply increasing science by 50% like the other science buildings, they add to the base science rate. This means that the increased science generated from libraries is then multiplied from the other science buildings!
No specialists slots after patch :(

Your civilization analyses made for a great read, and I agree with almost everything you are saying. For this reason, I think you should edit your OP to include the new civilizations in the discussion.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on these.

He noted that melee city attackers may not be able to make perfect use of terrain and may end up in open land, which has -33% modifiers on defense. Therefore, it helps protect them if they are forced into open tiles to attack cities.
