I've figured out how to maximize the production of my workers and farmers, yet these other three specialties baffle me. I can't get higher than a 9 for one surrounded by trees/ocean with one neighbor.

Are there other beneficial ways to place these specialties? That is, other than adding one more for a great leader.

Those 3 specialist types use the palace as drop-off point.
The palace needs to be upgraded to get more efficiency from those 3 type of specialists.
The village green, can be built when CoL is known, is an alternative drop-off location for merchants, scientists and artists.

Thanks. Stupid question - what do I need in order to be able to upgrade the palace?

Thanks. Stupid question - what do I need in order to be able to upgrade the palace?

Renaissance upgrades a small palace to modest, Industrial Revolution upgrades a modest one to large, and to get ginormous, you have to win the Camelot auction.

Unless you are co-ordinating with your civ mates to build Ren and IR to upgrade one of each type of building and sell them back for excess hammers, it's probably a lot easier to find a good location for a science/culture conclave and build a village green. If you find a nice woodsy area, you can get your scientists up to 48-50 pretty easily.

Thanks again. I found it. Court of camelot and a couple of other things.

Sorry - one last question. I read the guides on here but it isn't exactly clear. Does proximity to the palace and to the library have any bearing?

The workers run from their house, to the library, to the dropoff point (either the palace or the Village Green, whichever is closer)

The longer that trip takes, the less productive they are.

If you are using a village green, it doesn't matter how close to the palace you are at all.

Ok so to be clear, I need good proximity to the drop off point and to the library, just like the stone mason needs proximity to the stone and to the stone mason and the farmer to the field and the granary.

Yes, it does. But this counts towards all house + improvement + drop-off points.
All 3 next to each other + fresh sources will give the highest efficiency.
The % bonus from civics, wonders, great people, eras will increase efficiency even more.

BUT, there is a 96 (including palace) building limit for all buildings (farms, guard towers, houses, etc.)
So, not every house will give the most efficiency.

When you say "fresh sources" what do you mean?

Forests + fresh water give happiness to houses which improve efficiency too.

Oh right - gotcha.

I rarely even bother with libraries anymore. Wait til you get CoL and University. Find a good spot where you can build that is surrounded by forest / water. Build your village green and university next to each other, and surround them with houses in a way to maximize proximity and happiness.

Merchants and artists are pretty much worthless until those aspects get changes, don't bother with them either imo.

Now all you need is a few great people to get the beaker per citizen up to 70+, I tend to stock up on scientists in the early game whilst they are cheap.

Very cool. I did something similar, though I don't yet have the good fortune to have such a dense forest on my map. Got up to 21 with Public Education and a Great Scientist. We're in late middle ages.

This village green, does it take the place of all of the other enhancements? That is, if I use a village green rather than a stone mason will I get better results?

Is it only me, or scientist are different from worker/farmer to optimize? seems they have different happiness

For example, i got

From top-left
14 15 15 15
14 15 16 15 14

I just can't optimize more, but i know i'm doing something wrong
no bonuses

I think they have the same happiness, just that they need the village green. I was stuck at 8 until I did what these guys in the thread said and then I got up to 21 (early middle ages) when I optimized the locations.
