Dawn of the Middle Kingdom [DoC]

yeah leoreth is definitely lurking this thread, exposing all your l33t strategies.

I have always been of two minds when it comes to this kind of balancing. on the one hand I appreciate making the game as challenging as possible, on the other, I can't help but feel that if a person uses gamey "exploits" to win, they are really only "cheating" themselves.

sometimes its fun to play a super op civ game where you just annihilate the enemy, sometimes its fun to put restrictions on yourself in order to create a more realistic challenge.

plus it makes for great aar's.

on the otherhand, it'll make the next one even better, as you find new strategies and have to rely on high level game play to succeed

That stability recovered fast...

Sadly, as of this writing, I have been notified that Leoreth disabled rushing the AIs on spawn in the SVN version.
Since no one has been able to find out what causes the AI to move almost all their troops out of the capital on spawn,
Leoreth decided to grant a ten-turn protection on newly born civs from being DOW'ed. (If they DOW you on spawn however, that protection is forfeit, so Mongols are still fair game).
Unfortunately, rushing Corea and rushing Japan (a cornerstone of Chinese strategy since vanilla RFC) are no longer viable.
I feel like this AAR is partially responsible, though I recognize how exploitative RFC-style rushing is.

Actually we already implemented it in RFCE a couple months ago (2-3 versions ago)
I would guess that's where Leoreth took the idea...

California Dreamin'

The stability, as you can see, has gone back up a bit.

This is what the AI looks like when they're in all war mode.

We obtain Biology, possibly THE most valuable tech in the game before Liberalism & Theology.
With +1 Food to all Farms, and the fact that we're running a Specialist Economy with all Farms, this is going to take us to new heights of power.

Chinese city name for Los Angeles. Me Gusta.

The Indians, being immune to Die Antwoord,
conquered the city of Winburg with ease.

The Indians that took Winburg must have been pirates.

I will refrain from commenting on you last screenshot :p

It's respawned India isn't it? In my games (respawned) India usually achieves nothing because of Mughal occupation and trading company events.

So the Indians captured Winburg? Capture that city quickly, Dawn, before it's name turns the Indians into a superpower!

TD killed England, so India should thrive.

But France is 4 turns from Economics in that last screenshot. I would have traded Economics to them ages ago.

Actually, I have nothing to fear from India.

Despite all their buffs,

They tend to under-perform no matter what.

It's mostly due to the Mughals spawning on their core
and England + France sending in Trading Company conquerors.

Even with England out of the picture, one can see how messed up India
is with just Mughals occupying the Northwestern part of the subcontinent.

Right, India shouldn't be a problem because of the Mughals in the north. Besides, with their crappy cities it's hard to do well until after Biology, which is still ages away. Interestingly, once I saw India, which was at the time vassal of England, being the most advanced civilization in the world, followed by England. I guess it was because of the imba respawn in the old version.

Now You're Just Some Version That I Used To Play.

Well, I've made the switch over to SVN.
Haven't started a game yet but I am having mixed feelings about what to expect.

This spot is settled; just look at it. It's beautiful.
It grabs 6 Food Resources all by itself, despite 3 Marsh tiles
being inside of its fat cross.

Checking up on our Pirates here, as we haven't seen them in a while.
See here; the Germans built Danzig (a more sensible city spot)
nearby where we previously razed Stettin.
Coming up next is the Congress of Babil.

We want to fatten the pig before we roast it.
Yes. Load up on that cholesterol, you!

You too, Napoleon.
Would you like a Jelly Doughnut?

Unfortunately, this proposal does not come into fruition.

Strange. Zara Yaqob doesn't want anything.
I would've thought that he'd be interested in
snatching a city from the Egyptians, but I guess not.

Dang it! My own vassal states defying me!

China Proper opts out of acquiring any new possessions.
None of these proposals are ideal for us.

Excellent. Everyone's getting hurt this round.

Well, almost everyone that is.
You can't blame me for trying, can you?

Poor India, it's borders are already extremely messed up
and here I go and do this. Pakistan is my vassal after all though.
That concludes the Congress of Babil.

@Everyone: Happy 4/20!

Cavalry Is Best Unit.

MAJOR EDIT: I accidentally skipped ahead too far. Redoing this update.

Drydocks normally are okay. But now, they're amazing thanks to this event.

The Turks wrest control of their northernmost city back from the Germans.

What? Why!? I thought we were best friends!

And, we get Infantry.
Still going to use mostly Cavalry though.
A 15 STR 2 MOVE unit that can withdraw
is much more valuable than a 20 STR 1 MOVE unit that can't.
Cavalry are still preferred because they don't need siege to be effective.
Just some members of the stack that have Flanking 1 +2.

And this is the reason why France DOW's us.
They got their Trading Company conquerors.

It shouldn't be too hard to guess which victory I'm gunning for.

Culture victory with the dozen Great Artists which you have been secretly farming? ;)

Anyway, what am I supposed to celebrate on 20/4?

I accidentally skipped ahead too far in the previous update.
Refer to it again and read it over please, with the corrected entry.

The Italian Wars.

Cochin falls to the marauding French conquerors.
Qin Shi Huang vows to make Napoleon regret chasing his ambitions.

With a concentrated, coordinated assault on the Italian Peninsula.
From Sea and from Land, the Sea Pony hordes descend on Milan & Rome.

Soon, Milan & Rome are captured, dealing a severe blow to the French war machine.
Nearly a million kilograms of canoles are liberated from French possession.
Oh, and the Italians were freed too.

A look at my stability.

I like how there are so many dead civs that China is almost past the top bar.
