That probably wouldn't do anything, besides he won't be back for a week.

The reason it wouldn't do anything is because I'm assuming it got down to Population 1 from Japanese Air Bombardment, and possibly some naval bombardment. It'll just go down to 1 again even if we were to increase the population up 2.

Well, i'll give it a try and see what happens.
 
Well, I put the population of Foochow up to 10 and the Japs didn't raze it! This is with VP on like I decribed earlier in this thread, with me as Germans (I also beefed up the British, French and Russian defensive positions). Japs also captured Wuhan, which is a VP location in my game.
 
what i don't understand is that many a times i too capture cities with population 1. but i always get the option of either razing it or setting up a new governor in it. why then, would the ai raze a 1-pop city?
And by the way i am pretty sure it was foochow.
 
Britain v2.0- Sid Level
Week 42, 1939
Nothing much to report yet. Destroyed most of the German navy. Germany has conquered Poland Belgium and Netherlands as usual. So fighting occured in france. My airforce is holding up well against german bombers. I haven't been able to produce much more than a few infantries though. Also British science is very slow. I need more universities i guess. But that's gonna take time.
Japan has conquered Davao, razed foochow, and conquered Wuhan. A few American ships spotted in the Med. I am planning to carry this out as it happened in WWII. First I'll take care of Africa and the Japs in china, then I'll go for Sicily and up to Rome, and later I'll invade normandy. If the German AI attacks Russia, it'll help me a lot in my plan.
 
1 test, is nothing. Just because they bombarded it down to 1 once, and decided to raze it, doesn't mean that they will do it everytime.
 
Hi again,

It is now turn 16, 1941. Since turn 5 I conducted a Russian blitz through Norway and Sweeden, knocking both of them out in a couple of turns. I rested my forces and two turns ago launched a pre-emptive strike into German held territory. In the last few turns, I have taken Tirana, Thessaloniki (GE occupied), Sofia, Bucharest and Konigsberg. I have taken modest losses in T34s and some Yak-1s. As it stands now I have;

My production is high and the only area where the Germans are close to parity is in the air. We will see how long it takes me to overwhelm them and the Italians

thank you for your report about the razing of Foochow. And please continue your report about other razings you notice (and all other players too :). In my next post I write something about "1-population razing" - or better known as "autorazing".

there is a way to stop "1-population razing" (or in discussions better known as "autorazing"). Autorazing happens when the city is at low population and gathered low culture points (less than 10, so it can not expand its borders).

If you want to know more about it, please look in the forum Civ3-General discussions / Autorazing questions 5.2.2004.

Your "city protection wonders" generate no culture. That is one reason why autorazing happens ... and therefore I anounced in my last report, that I will add culture to the multiple generated wonders.

Germany - v 1.9 - Sid - Week 35, 1942

The Blitzkrieg continues!
Cities taken since week 30: Culiacan, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Bismarck, Helena, Winnipeg, Port Nelson, San Diego, Los Angeles, Rosaria, Spokane, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Zesfontein, Grootfontein.
Seattle under siege. Mexico eliminated. I'm at war with Brazil. 30% of the Chilean army annihilated (only 100 divisions left). First Panthers produced. First Panther destroyed U.S. marine in Spokane. The same Panther was later destroyed in Winnipeg when it attacked a redlined Matilda. :(
The battle of Winnipeg was almost as costly as the battle of Boston. Lost 15 panzers (and one Panther), 15 SS infantry, 10 infantry and 3 artillery. The good news is that I destroyed 20 planes when I took Winnipeg. Canberra new British capital.
In Africa DAK has taken two British cities, but two attempts to take Salisbury has failed. I have brought in additional troops, and the defenses in Salisbury have been weakened, which opens for a third attack to be successful. However, the Japanese have appeared just north of the city, and I'm afraid they will destroy Salisbury before I have a chance to take it.
Nairobi, Dar-es-Saalam, Lilongwe and Lusaka razed by the Japanese. I have just made South Africa a top priority. I have to stop the Japanese from ruining the whole country. I wish I had some panzers there, but South Africa is currently out of reach for my transports, and the war with Brazil has made the South Atlantic hazardous to cross.
Pathetic display of the Japanese: one Yamato and two destroyer flotillas escorted a transport to Java, and from the transport exactly one (1) redlined marine attacked Surabaya. After it failed (naturally) the whole escort-fleet turned back. No wonder the stupid Japanese AI needs the help of my u-boats to hold the Allies back in Indonesia. Talk about waste. I'm surprised the AI has taken any islands at all.
The Axis controls 80% of world population, and 50% of world area. The end of the war draws near.

Well yes, it's just over the whole course of this in thread you will see that Foochow gets razed rather often. I've started my game again anway (cuz I decided to change the VP conditions i'm experimenting with to take off the score for defeating opposing units, more emphasis on VP locations that way) so i shall report whether it gets razed or not again with the increased population.

I had a though - I remember in alderick's WW2 Europe scenario he gave the Germans a couple of transports off Venice - this was (if they didn't get sunk of course) to enable (and engourage the AI) them to get troops into North Africa. Perhaps that could be tried for this scenario?
 
Suggestions regarding map changes and unit upgrades

Hi there! Having discovered this great scenario a couple of weeks ago, and spending definitely too much time playing and replaying WWII since :crazyeye: I would like to give my own two cent's worth.

First of all: Great job, Rocoteh, you seem to have created almost an entirely new game in its own right. Keep up this truly outstanding work!

Now, as far as my gaming experience goes: I have started playing version 1.9, and followed through the course of the campaign playing the Germans on Emperor and Deity levels, and giving both the US and France a couple of turns into the game. In my German games I have always been able to stage an invasion of the British Isles after defeating continental France, and before attacking Russia. In my most advanced game, by Mid-1942 "my" Germans had more or less easily conquered all of Europe, Russia up to the Urals, the entire Middle East, most of Africa, and a long range amphibious operation had captured New Caledonia, thereby eliminating the last remnant of the French. I have ended this game now in order to play 2.0, probably as some other civilization.

My impressions and suggestions:

Regarding gameplay in 1.9:
- Drafting made things much too easy. In my last game as the Germans I ended up with more than 200 drafted German Infantry, which were great for garrison duty, but which took away much of the necessity to consolidate your conquests before moving on. So it is a good thing to eliminate drafting in 2.0 onwards IMO.
- City Air defence is much too strong. I suggest eliminate this, and have the player and AI relegate to AA units and fighters.
- For some reason which i have not been able to determine, the Soviet AI auto-production of Soviet militia never started.
- Foochow in China is always razed by the Japanese because it starts with 0 culture. Increasing culture to 10 in the editor resulted in no razing at least in my playtest.

Regarding world map 2.0:
- Good job to eliminate some useless African cities.
- Add rail-road between Ruhr and Amsterdam.
- The fish in the red sea between Cairo and Suez Canal (rename: Port Said?) should be eliminated in order to prevent Suez Canal from growing unnaturally at the expense of Cairo. Sinai peninsula should be desert entirely. Add some bonus food resources SW of Cairo instead to enable growth here.
- Kiev in Russia should get additional bonus food resources, whereas Charkov and Kursk should get none, in order to reflect actual size and industrial productivity (Kiev was the third largest city in the USSR)
- Rename Wick to Aberdeen (most important city in Scotland north of Edinburgh/Glasgow)
- Take away the bonus food resouces from the desert cities Riyadh in Arabia and Murzuk/Sabbah, Bisciara and In-Salah in the Sahara: In my games these cities turned into some major industrial centers, while in reality they are not much more than desert oasis.
- The same applies to Uganda. It should not become so productive.
- The same applies to Obdorsk in northern Siberia
- Move Johannesburg one tile to the south. In reality this should be a major city, bigger and more important than Pretoria. It should also have some shield bonus to simulate South Africa's rich mines.
- Give Sydney in Australia more shield boni. In reality it should be a much more important industrial center than Canberra. For the same reason, the autoproduction of ANZAC infantry should be moved there (sorry Melbourne :p ).

Regarding units:
- Destroyer flotillas should be eliminated. AI will build only those, except maybe for a few Yamatos.
- In general, more of the early units should be made obsolete by new developments. Otherwise the production menu becomes totally cluttered later in the game. And it is somewhat unrealistic that e. g. Germany should still build Panzer IIIs when for the same cost Panzer IVs or even Panthers are available.
- German Panzer III should be made obsolete with the advent of the Panther. Panzer IIIs should upgrade to StuG IIIs (which is realistic since many undercarriages of this tank were converted to gun carriers and other such uses in reality)
- German Panzer IVf2 should become available with Land 1941, probably more expensive, and they should be made obsolete by and upgrade to Panzer IVh.
- German Me-410 (F) should be eliminated. This plane is quite useless in stats compared to the other fighters, and in reality it was never produced in significant numbers. Since it does not have a particular unit graphic there is also no loss of "flavor" here.
- German He-219 does have pretty strong stats, giving a much stronger role than in reality. I suggest toning these stats down or dropping the plane altogether, and instead offer a beefed up, upgraded version of Me-109 or a FW-190 with longer range.
- German SS Panzer 1944 should be renamed simply "Königstiger", in order to make it easier to differentiate from SS Panzer 1943 in the build menu.
- Combat engineer is not necessary, should be dropped.
- Brits always build too many Blackburn Skua, too many to reflect their actual usefulness in real life. I suggest to reduce their bombardment strength.
- New ship classes should make older classes obsolete, eg. Gneisenau class is made obsolete by GneisenauC2, Carrier is made obsolete by CarrierC2, ans o on, however no upgrading here...
- Italian G-50 Freccia fighter plane: I do get an error when calling up this unit in the civilopedia, causing the game to crash.
- Germany should get at least a few heavy artillery as starting units. The Wehrmacht actually had these in the beginning of WWII, with the specific intent to use them on the Maginot line and Belgian fortresses. To compensate, just such a belgian fortress unit should be added, in the forest SE of Brussels.
- Auto-production in Germany: If city air defence improvement is eliminated, install German 88 auto-production in Ruhr.
- Auto-production in Italy: Give them poor Italians some transports from time to time, so that the AI can actually try to reinforce their Libyan possessions without having to walk around all of the Mediterranian getting in everybody's way.
Auto-production in Britain: Edinburgh should not auto-produce a British Tank brigade, as it becomes obsolete fast, but rather a Worker instead of London, which should auto-produce a Spitfire, to make the Air Battle of Britain more difficult for the Germans.


Well, these are all suggestions I can think of right now. Have fun. I certainly will, with this. Looking forward to the huge map.

Hi Rocoteh. I have never left but had little to add as I awaited 2.0. Here is my report -

Germany SID v2.0
1939

Started attack on Poland but in week 37 Russians approached me demanding 58 gold. As I always favor early attack on the Soviets I said no and they declared war on me. Poland eliminated that week.

In week 45 Japan and Russia came to peace terms. By that time I had taken Riga, Minsk and Lwow and eliminated unnecessary cities in-between. I was playing defense in the West.

Nothing unusual in Naval operations. Destroyed a good part of the British fleet with Uboats.

Turning West I took Copenhage in week 46 with Amsterdam ( I razed it) and Brussels.

French attacks were focused on Stuttgart and they did manage to take out the two radar stations in front of it.

War broke out with Norway and Sweden as I refused to move my mines. I have bombarded them but wanted to avoid splitting forces until I got more units.

I certainly feel the pain of no armies and higher cost for Panzers. SID may be too difficult with no tech stealing but we all look for a challenge.

Startup was very fast!! However, time between moves does not appear to be faster but that may be becaue early on there are many units.

In other areas -

Italians are down to two Northern Africa cities and six East Africa cities although they did take Cyprus.

Japan is not making much progress in China! They have Foochow, Wuhan and Yenan. This is the worst I have seen. Perhaps those marines are costing too much?? Or perhaps the early war with the Soviets diverted them? The US holds all four Phillipine cities.

Japan does hold Sarmi but not much beyond their starting positions.

Thais are down to two cities - the Brits took the others.

No razing yet other than by me!
 
Germany - v 1.9 - Sid -Week 42, 1942

Cities conquered since week 35: Seattle, San Francisco, Wager Bay, Whitehorse, Aklavik, Anchorage, Quito, Windhoek.
The blitzkrieg is over (for now). In North America only Fairbanks remains. It will fall within a couple of weeks. It takes time to send units to the northwest. Most of my divisions are already marching towards South America. Colombia eliminated. Portugal eliminated by Japan. I failed to save South Africa. Salisbury, Johannesburg and Pretoria destroyed by the Japanese. I airdropped six divisions outside Cape town, but the Japanese have sent over 100 divisions there. There is not much for me to do in Africa now. Japan has invaded Madagaskar. I have landed six Panthers in Brazil. This will be the first serious test of their strength. I am at war with Argentina. And Argentina and Chile has declared war on Brazil. I guess it had something to do with sub-incidents. It's amusing to see them fight each other instead of me. This will make my invasion a bit easier. I would say that if I weren't to interrupt their little war Brazil would win since they have tanks, and the others do not.
