Civ design challenge

Thanks Sukritact! That puts Urdnott ahead with four votes to Doc and Hoop each having one.

I'll vote for Doc since I think it represents Moshoeshoe in the way I'd personally picture him, a lot of the others are overly offensive minded.

And with that, the Lesotho challenge is complete! Our winner this time around is Urdnot_Scott, defeating previous winner Natan35. Congratulations, Urdnott! Thank you all very much for your submissions and votes.

What's the new challenge for this week, you ask? Well, that would be the Hopi. Happy researching, and I look forward to seeing everybody's designs (which should be in by Monday, May 4th)!

Congrats with the victory Urdnot_Scott! :D

.. After reading and learning a great deal about Lesotho during this design challenge, I couldn't help to mess around in photoshop and do a (very) fast and not (very) impressive leader scene with Moshoeshoe I:
Spoiler :

I know it isn't pretty and (probably) won't be used, but it's just for fun - took me about an hour.

Getting the competition firing up early on!

The Hopi

Leader: Polingaysi Qoyawayma

UA: The Peaceful Ones: Holy Sites provide +1 Food, +3 Food if settled on a Plains tile. We Love the King Day is increased by two turns for every Declaration of Friendship you have.

UU: Kachina Dancer: Great Prophet replacement. Upon being born, a We Love The King Day begins in all cities.

UB: Basket Weaver: Granary Replacement. Provides +2 Faith rather than +2 Food. During We Love the King Day, Plains tiles in a city with a Basket Weaver provide +1 Food and +1 Faith.

Danmasch, that's actually a really good start! I'm glad you were inspired to create it!

GPuzzle, thank you for the first challenge submission for the Hopi!

Congrats with the victory Urdnot_Scott! :D

That's pretty good. I'm rather interested in doing a proper Lesotho at some point, so if you're okay with me using it, I might do just that!

My submission:

Spoiler :
The Hopi - Leader?
(Colors: Fair yellow and bright blue)

UA - The Light of Tawa: When a new Citizen is born, gain Culture equal to the city's Population. Cultural and Religious City-States have their resting point increase to +15 with you.
The first part is to reflect the naming tradition of the Hopi, that happens in the 20th day of the baby's life. The second is a lesser bonus, to connect their religiosity.
I intended on adding a 'starts with a scout instead of a Warrior' in the end, to combo with the UU, but I felt that was overkill, even by my standards.

UB - Kachina Doll Carvers: Replaces the Amphitheater. Three Artist specialist slots. +2 Culture. 2 Great Work of Art slots. No maintenance.
Kachina dolls are one of the most memorable of the Hopi's traditions. These are held in high regard by any of the Pueblo Peoples. The Kachina concept also have a religious aspect, but I chose not to explore here to avoid getting too much into one Unique Component.

UU - Kachina Clowns: Replace the Scout. For each plot the Clown moves through that no other Civilization has discovered, the Empire gain 1 Culture.
This one was hard. I have no idea what to do with the Unique Unit here. I thought the idea was kinda cool without being too much on the face, I'm still unsure if this is cool enough, though.

Wow. My design will have a pretty unique ability considering those designs...
(But I won't post it just yet)

Let me try.

The Hopi - Nakwaiyamtewa

UA : The Hopi way :
Archeaologist build Holy Site instead of Landmark. Holy Site yield 4 Faith, 2 Culture and 1 Food instead of original. Increase +1 Faith and +1 Culture to very owned Holy Site when advance age.

UB : (unnamed) - replace Shrine.
Generate 1 Food and 1 Faith.
Additional +1 Faith :c5faith: and +1 Culture :c5culture: to every UA already built in cities when researched
Philosophy, Education, Fertilizer, Archaeology, Radio and Ecology

+10% Growth :c5food: bonus to city with UA built when research Education, Fertilizer and Ecology
(No bonus yield if the UA is build after research those technology)

UU : Clowns (or more redundant "Hopi clowns) - replace Missionary : Cost +20% more faith. +2 Happiness when garrison in city,
+1 Happiness when stationed at Holy Site.
+1 additional Happiness when stationed at Holy Site placed adjacent to farms.
the Holy Site stationed with clown yield +1 more food for each farm on grassland, oasis, flooded plain or plain.

My design emphasis on their surprisingly well-documented mythology, Their agricultural-based faith. But I focus on how they "did not have a conception of land being bounded and divided. They lived on the land that their ancestors did." The city and Holy Site build at early-game will become more powerful as their ancestor land become their sacred land. Also, I imagine a clown at holy site at center of farmland inspire and watch over the farmers. :)

Thank you for your submissions, bane_ and poom! Looking forward to yours as well, Natan!

The Hopi

Leader: Nakwaiyamtewa
UA: Peaceful Reservation
Each unit in your territory(that belongs to other civ) reduces the :c5strength: strength of enemy units in your territory by 5%(up to 30%). A WLtKD starts when an enemy unit(non barbarian) is killed, and gain :c5faith: faith when an enemy loses a city or a unit. Tiles occupied by non- friendly units may be worked, and provide 1 :tourism: tourism(2 if religious unit is present).

UB: Kachina workshop
Replaces forge. Instead of the forge's effects, increases :c5culture: culture and :c5faith: faith from stone and jewels (gems, gold and silver) by 1, and provides 1 :tourism: tourism per each two sources of those resources in the city. Contains an artist specialist.

UU: Kachina dancer
Replaces Great artist. May be bought with :c5faith: faith. May not be consumed for a golden age, but may be used to start a WLtKD in all cities(the duration is equal to the number of your religion's followers × 1.5). The :greatwork: great works it creates may be sold to other civilizations for :c5gold: gold and :tourism: influence on that civ(equal to your base :c5culture: culture output).

Hopi People
Leader: Nakwaiyamtewa
UA: Natural Reverence
Whenever a new :c5citizen: citizen is born, a city converts to your :c5faith: religion or a Kiva is constructed in the Empire, receive a burst of :c5culture: culture equal to the number of unimproved tiles in the :c5capital: Capital. Worked, unimproved tiles yield +1 :c5food: food and +1 :c5faith: faith for every religious building in that city, provided it is following your religion.

UI: Kiva
The Kiva is a unique improvement which only the Hopi may build. A Kiva may be built on any terrain type after the discovery of philosophy, but may not be built adjacent to another Kiva. The Kiva yields +2 :c5faith: faith and connects any adjacent resources to your Empire - provided you've discovered the right technology to improve it - granting +1 :c5food: food and +1 :c5production: production to these resources, allowing you to leave natural bounties untouched.

UB: Kachina (Replaces Scout)
The Kachina is slightly weaker than the Scout it replaces, with a measly 2 :c5strength: combat strength, but receives +1 :c5moves: movement point in friendly lands. Furthermore, the Kachina also receives the unique promotion 'Peaceful People' which cause Barbarian units to ignore the Kachina unless attacked. If the Kachina is killed, it may respawn in the :c5capital: capital with the unique promotion 'Blessing of Maasaw', allowing it to yield +2 :c5faith: faith per turn while garissoned if the Empire is at peace.

Tried to base this around the incredibly deep reverence the Hopi have for the natural world and all its abundance. Its really an awesome worldview, to be Hopi is to be moral, and to be moral is to be respectful of nature. Very cool stuff and hard to fit into just a few uniques. Kind of worried this is too complicated though, especially the Kachina which could probably lose one of its bonuses.

To make peace with everything, to be civilized, to be mannered, to dance, pray and celebrate for the sun, nature, river and every woman and man of the world (as long as you try to brainwash our children) .This is the path of Hopi. Who's quite a peaceful people unlike warlike Pueblo or land-grabber Navajo. :)

Thank you for your designs, Natan and Urdnott! We're getting some really good designs here!

It feels so great. Love it. I just feel that it's a bit problematic to expand since you lack happiness, but alright.

I'm staying out of this, at least in part because the Hopi are incredibly litigious.
