2 weeks in Spain and I'm back home eager to play some civ, then this happens o_O

Would be nice if people could report to this thread after steam updates if they tried playing and whether it worked or not

Could anyone tell me how to report this at steam or Y2K? Maybe if more people report this they make fixing it more urgent.
Phone number for y2k support is 1-866-219-9839. Please call everyone. Flood the call center so they will also put pressure on steam. As well be sure to send a support ticket to steam please.

I just called the number from Skype and my balance remained where it was. I guess that's a toll free number? So anyone who is abroad can call Y2K support via steam for free. Hopefully we can put enough pressure on them to do something about this.

Here's how the call went:
Me: This issue that's affecting everyone who play Civ V MP
Support: Let me see what I can find out
Support: ....
Support: We haven't heard anything about this

Call goes on for 9 minutes I describe everything in detail, eventually he takes down my contact information and this is the support ticket he creates for me, copypaste from my email: "Steam crashes Civ 5 multiplayer during the game, during the reload"

These guys don't deserve to have jobs

Got same issues here.. Hard to get into a game, no matter if we load or start new game. If we manage to get into a game we typically disconnect first turn..

Of course this happens when my mate finally have some free time to play.. Hrmpf.. I hate steam.. And I hate all these crappy solutions to prevent piracy..

Have seen posts about the problem, but not a lot of posts.. Anyone still managing to play MP games on internet??? Is this screwing up the game for everyone or just some?

I love Steam. Never had any issues (outside of betas) before now. Valve should be commended for it's success despite its poor reputation among some.

According to a mod post on the Steam User Forums, something in the May 15 update may have broken some of the multiplayer games that use their P2P API. Now while it is obviously broken, at least we know that Valve is apparently looking into it. And it IS Valve's problem, not 2k's.

Also, it is a general multiplayer thing, not just loading save multiplayer games. New games, if they work at all, generallydisconnect within the first 50 turns.

Valve Has Acknowledged A Potential Problem

On the Steam Forums (Civ V thread), a representative from Valve has responded by saying:

Valve by BurtonJ:

"We are investigating a possible Steam issue that would impact games using our peer-to-peer APIs for multiplayer.

I will post an update as soon as I have more information."

That was posted at 11:23 AM today. Hopefully this will help get things resolved.

Reinstalled steam and game and then it looked a bit better actually getting past turn 1.. But on turn 145 it disconnected, and loading is impossible.. (And that was on marathon, so maybe you can play some more turns there?)..

Really hope this gets fixed fast..

You know 2kGames have already admitted they had no specialist multiplayer programmer employed at Firaxis when Civ 5 was in production. Which is persumably why it didn't work at all on release and why they were using third parties API's. Which all goes to say you guys better hope the problem lies with Steam because if it lie's with Firaxis's misuse of said API's (creating an issue when they were altered slightly) then there might not be a fix for a good long while.

Ironically enough I'd missed it. You know what the saddest thing of all is, any twit fresh out of a CS degree could program a fully functional inhouse pbem-like system and they could have released with a stable multiplayer game that would have been everything everyone expected anyway. Absolutely shocking design decison from any perspective and just plain stupid without a dedicated programmer with experience of all that STUN/STUNT crap and deterministic AI's. I can only imagine the face of the guy they made do it. "Oh and use the Steam API's while you're at it. That'll be cool." Poor bastard.

There's no excuse really.. No matter if you have good programmers or bad programmers, you should always test that your software works before issuing a new version. If the customers have no choice in whether to upgrade or not, and they can not choose to downgrade if there's something wrong, then testing scheme needs to be very strict. Stuff like this should just not manage to get into production.

If the problem appeared 10 days after patch, and only for some users, then one could always argue that it is hard to test all cases, so it can happen, but then it happens to everyone immediately, then they do not seem to have tried to test that multiplayer works with patch at all.

Anyhow.. I guess the root of it might be that when steam makes updates, it doesn't test that every game still works before disting it. Appearantly not Civ V at least.

Well.. If you could set up a virtual LAN through software one could hook up the people that was going to play. If Civ V ran on linux I think I should be able to set that up.. Sadly you need to use winblows to play, and I don't know of any software up for the task there..

Is anyone still having issues with the game not advancing after 50~ or so turns? My buddies and I haven't been able to get a game to play since all this started last week... so the problem seems to be persisting on this end.
