Money Does Grow on Trees: How to Convert Forests into Lots and Lots of Gold

(a) With Kremlin, it becomes an excellent deal.
(b) It's even worthwhile sometimes without Kremlin. If you don't want a wonder (where rushbuy costs more) or a project (where you can't rushbuy), mature towns are as efficient or more so than ever other (non-resource) tile in the game for production*, except State Property + Caste System workshops. SP + Caste isn't always a reasonable option late-game - Emancipation or Free Market can end up being better choices. The problem is getting the towns, because it takes a lot more to get a town then to get a workshop.

*If you have to work farms to feed your mines/workshops. If you have abundant surplus food, mines and Caste System or SP workshops become a bit stronger, and non-Caste non-SP workshops are comparable to towns.

With Kremlin I'd use slavery, if Emancipation wasn't mandatory.

Drafting is better than rush-buying for units. And you need the money for upgrades and high levels of research. I guess at the very end of the game, it's fine, but I never do it even with the Kremlin.

Also, to rush-buy you need US. Which means you need cottages. If your economy isn't based around cottages, it's kind of pointless.

Haha, it depends on who the player is. I've had the odd person on the GENERAL area of the forum lecturing me on how over-powered Zeus & Pizza-Chicken area. Apparently they are so over-powered, that after building these wonders, they were able to take it to the next level, and just romp over everyone.

????

I couldn't find the merrits to that one without being called an elitist, so what do I know...

The Zeus and Chiken Whatever are pretty good Wonders to fail-gold on. I'm glad the Wonders are in the game.

Wait a minute... Horse rushing on a speed cheat.... Sort of makes the commerce thing a little pointless since it's gona be a super duper easy win regardless.

Personally, I'd just romp over my enemies, then let my units all disband if my econ tanks and run specialists in all those cities blowing away the rest of the AIs. You don't need commerce to tech, and you certainly don't need any extra help rushing with a s.c.

Save the trees for infra like libraries & courthouses.

Statue of Zeus would be good in a teamgame 3v3 or something, where you're always at war and only 1/3 people has to invest the hammers into the wonder but 3/3 of the enemy team feels the war weariness.

Ok. Are you really this snobbish in real life, or do you only act this way in civ? You do realize there are a lot of Marathon players on this forum, more than before, and that you've just dissed all of them? Along with the HOFers?

Erm... not exactly sure where you get that from. He compared the worthiness of gold towards hammers, not the failgold conversion rate towards rushbuying.
He said the failgold conversion was a bad trade because a :hammers: is worth at least 3 :gold:. When Keilah challenged that ratio, Obsolete justified it with rushbuying. I'm not sure how you could take it any other way.

Obsolete's comment was patently absurd, because it is regularly worthwhile to make worse trades (e.g. building wealth, regular fail-gold, some tile choices). How much a :hammers: is worth relative to other things like :gold: or :science: (or future :hammers:) depends on your needs. As Keilah said, the relative value of a :hammers: versus other things such as :gold: and :science: depend on a lot of things, and varies over the course of the game.

Because you focus all your energy toward generating failgold.

No, it's because I REX heavily or kill someone early.

At that point I'e got a lot of land, and enough production. But not enough moolah. NEED MORE MOOLAH.

This is when I turn to the trees.

thing about failgold is that it doesn't actually give you 'MORE GOLD NOW', it gives you more gold 'at an uncertain but probably fairly near point in the future'. One game I banked too hard on failgolding a wonder that just refused to be built anywhere else, went broke and my tech rate went to ~0 for long enough that i wasn't able to catch up.

Yes. One of the dangers, isn't it?

You should still be able to catch up. I mean, you'll be running at 100% for a while. And most of the time, it would work. Look at the tech screen before fail-gold a Wonder. Make sure it's one where pretty much everyone can build it.

This is why you have to go and kill someone the moment the gold rolls in.

100% would give you ~20 beakers per turn, since you have spent all workerturns on chops, and have no cottages.

Don't know where you got that number from. 3 libraries nets 23 beakers. Capital nets another 8. Extraneous resources nets another 10. That's 41 on three cities. Since you should normally have around 8 cities for this strat, I don't see what the problem is.

Tell me that you didn't go and fail-gold with TWO CITIES. It's like saying guns are bad because you might accidentally shoot yourself. I mean, if you shoot yourself, it's your own damn fault.

Also, due to the fact that you want to fail your Wonder, you probably don't want to go for fail-gold with a monopoly tech. You kind of want to select a tech that the AI already has, and preferably in great abundance to minimize the wait time, which kind of makes sense if you think about it.

extra resources give gold, not commerce

with many cities, yes, traderoutes and the little bits here and there should get a respectable tech rate assuming failgold pays the bills

while you DID specify marathon, I just wanna point out that on normal, if you plan on failgolding a wonder that many AIs have access to, don't expect to get many hammers in before it's completed.

Not any competent MP I've ever heard of.

I never play MP so what do I know. But I figured that you'd be at war with your human competition permanently from the moment you met, wouldn't that make extra war weariness pretty powerful?

nah for some reason most MP games aren't set to 'always war' and people actually expect you to let their scout get away for free when they park it next to your warrior :D

Haha! I remember back when everyone used to get mad at the person who insta-dowed on everyone else's scouts, like they just backstabbed and did something evil.

If you have enough workers and forests, all you need is 10 turns get the Wonder to near-completion in two of your cities.

Hey guys,

I visit these forums only periodically now, and I love a thread like this one. It's good to know that some of the old forum regulars still think about gameplay balances.

Even though this thread went on a tangent after a tangent, it provided for some great entertainment. Keep it up! :)

10 turns is actually kind of a while on normal speed and it's unrealistic (and/or bad) to have so many workers that you can chop out a wonder in <10 turns in two cities at once and still be improving the tiles you need.

I have been trying to tell him that workerturns is a much more precious resource in normal for a while.
