Aircraft problems in Civ

As you all know MicroProse didn't find it too important to deal with the following problem, which can be sometimes pretty annoying: No aircraft can fly over enemy ground units, or naval units. I haven't heard anything about this, but I hope Firaxis can somehow correct this unrealistic feature.

In real life you can send fighter planes to escort bombers in bombing raids, it would be great if it could be integrated into the game, but it might be a bit too complicated. It's not that important, but sometimes it's bloody hard to protect my bombers against a strong enemy.

Right. I hate it when I send a bomber to bomb an enemy city but it can't retreat so when it's the enemy's turn it sends a fighter over to annihilate my bomber.

It would be nifty if your airplanes could fly over enemy ground units (and naval units), and also if your submarines could go under enemy naval units. Similarly, your ground and naval units should be able to pass under air units and the naval units should be able to pass over submarines.

As with most other aspects of the game, Firaxis hasn't released anything on this. I just hope that the reason they don't release anything is because they're slaving on Civ3. But if they aren't...

You are correct Legionary --
There were major air power problems in Civ2 - and hopefully they will be resolved in Civ3
One of these problems was that you could simply put a aircraft over a stack of units for a turn, and no ground units could possibly attack until the air unit was destroyed. I cannot tell how many different WW2 scenarios presented to me this problem that made draw after draw possible for my enemies.
This issue has to be corrected if the issue of air power in Civ3 is to work effectively.

u r so right! i dont lnow how many times i have to go around some stupid plane that is just sitting there waiting to get shot down.

That thing you mentioned, Johan, stacking units under a bomber is really annoying and one of the most unrealistic features in Civ...I admit that I use it for sieges sometimes, but I'd be happier if it wasn't possible in Civ3.

A few months ago I heard something about Firaxis planning to solve this problem (aircraft and subs passing over and under units), but the ideas then seemed a bit confusing.

Besides: Have you guys got any idea how all the info on the active unit (or all the units on the tile where the active unit stands) are going to be displayed in Civ3? I don't know how there will be enough room on the main map.

Yeah, that's another thing. I think bombers or fighters shouldn't at all be damaged when attacking ground units that have no firearms. The attack shouldn't always be absolutely succesful (so the bombed unit doesn't get killed), but the plane should never get injured.
