The Deity Challenge Line-up #24 - Arabian nights

My plan is DF -> Piety -> Jesuit Education -> Space and see how much it will take. I'm assuming not being tall enough will be compensated by an (at least) 2 more GSs than I usually can afford. I only wish I had some time to do that :/

edit: for the April 1st map, I suggest a map covered entirely in jungle, as in, every tile on the map is a jungle, and you play against 7 Brazils :D

So it is actually possible to settle 14 cities in the area. I settled exactly 14, and then after some wars got 2 in peace deals. Sitting on 64 tpt just from religious buildings, but I have no works of art, and I doubt they will help. France is running away too fast. We had trade route and open borders, but after I prophet spammed him, he is not opening borders, and even with 3 modifiers for +75% tourism, it was still rising slowly. Even though I went left side Liberty then straight to Reformation, it is simply not enough... this doesn't look promising at all.

hmmm. So not worth my time to replay? :)

Screenie of my 14 + 1 conquered city in spoilers.

Spoiler :

You could probably sack Rio for some great works.

Is it still possible to Camel Rush the French? It's late but it looks like he only really has Musketeers out - CAs should be able to hurt them something rudely. You could at a minimum torch his lands and destroy all his Chateaus which would slow down the culture growth. Good luck!

t237 - paying the price!
Spoiler :
Well, that's what I get for being unfocused and just trying to have fun on Deity! Bismarck wiped out Khan finally, and may take out Pedro. My king-making hasn't helped one bit, he won't propose our shared religion. 103 gpt for Tithe, and just bought yet another GP for 2300 faith to finish my spread on the W end of continent.

Meanwhile Nappy is going hard CV with SC, CR, Eiffel, Uffizi, Globe, and Broadway plus 6 other wonders - gulp. My culture is great, but 0 tourism. I am constantly gifting him 2 lux and have Damscus fortressed OK. He has taken several of Poc's cities.

My Small Piety plan was to flip to Order (Ger and Korea went there early, Nappy took Autocracy). I was actually getting pressured to Autocracy, started building Zoos everywhere to hang on a while, when suddenly Pedro and Poc go Freedom with me (never seen Poc go Freedom). Suddenly I have 40 happy, not enough science buildings or Factories, oops!

Cash has been good (I have prioritized bank line more than science). I still don't play Freedom well enough, I probably don't work enough specialists, I tend to work as many tiles as I can, and with Mecca starting so small it is taking forever to work more.

Full Liberty, 5/6 Piety, 3 Patronage L side, 2 in Rat, 5 in Freedom. All I have is SoL and, of course, Neuschwanstein. :D Just now building Natl Epic, probably a waste. I did get all my faith buildings in Renn (16) and passed Scholars in Residence. Nappy is now "only" 4 techs ahead, I will be 7 votes short of Diplo, really need Ger to propose religion (don't want the hate from the 3 eastern powerhouses). I am tempted to bulb towards Hubble as a backup, just about to get RLabs, but barely even have School built. Otherwise beeline Globalization and try to stay alive, Korea has tech lead again. Nappy hasn't touched him. Funny how the wars I started for WF (won by 60 hammers with 4 silver medallists) are still going strong.

I don't think it's worth it, but I think it is possible.

France was running away super fast, so I decided to take him out and then settle some more cities. I had 22 cities, but gave one to Korea to send my musician and trade route. Problem is, Germany and Korea started running away in place of France, and Korea got Sistine Chapel. I am influential with every but Korea, and he just jointly DoW'ed me with Genghis Khan. Without open border and trade routes, I won't be able to close the gap, so it's pretty much gg, especially since Korea is hitting Atomic and has the best army.

I think it's doable, but I was not really playing well or enjoying city spam in general, so I was just clicking 'next turn' and waiting for tourism to take over. I did not build a single library. I think what I could have done was propose arts funding and pre-research Acoustics, then after getting every religious building get into the Renaissance and get Acoustics, build musician's guild, get 2 musicians out of it and then the third from Liberty finisher, since the first one increases the count of great people (I forgot that). Also, I think it could have been a good idea to keep Pocatello or Bismark at war with Korea from early game, so that they would be focused on units and not wonders and culture. It would also be a good idea to kill France earlier to get his great works for some extra tourism. Earlier open borders, earlier trade routes would have helped, as well. I just botched it too much, but again, I am not really enjoying spamming crappy cities.

I tried again, attempting to go by Deau's culture victory guide. I only founded 2 more cities and couldn't seem to get enough of beakers OR hammers, missing every important wonder by a large margin. The only two I have built so far are Porcelain Tower and the Louvre, and just finished Public Schools at t190. My current problem is an imminent DOW from France, which I have already bribed away twice and don't think I can stop a third time. I definitely don't have the army or technology to resist.

Any tips on how to make Deau's guide work? Or do you really need the production early? I think I'm going to try the Small Piety approach next - so many playstyles I've never tried! I really do want to eke out a win here though...

Spoiler Illustrative screenshot :

I believe that guide works best for a Tradition 4 city approach and one of its pivot points is being able to get from Universities to Pisa fairly quickly. Usually if I finish Pisa I use the GE for Globe and then hope to get Sistine Chapel and then Louvre, although that tends to slip out because I keep forgetting I need to open Exploration for it

I always use the Pisa GE (if I get it) for Sistine, if it's still available. Surely it's strictly better than GT, no?

It is strictly better, but more often than not AI builds GT first and Sistine is delayed, so theoretically, by using GE on GT, you can increase the probability to end up having both

Really? Seems like the opposite trend in my games. Anyone who enters via Acoustics aims for Sistine as a priority.

T256 Diplomatic Victory

Spoiler :
Fun map! After getting Petra, it took till T113 for Universities.

At T133 I used my first GS to bulb into Printing Press and founded the WC one turn later. My religion had not spread yet and I did not want to offend everyone so early. I proposed WF, but later lost it due to no coal and hence no factories. I had a CS ally that had coal, but they would not give it to me until WF was over...I have no idea why, it had a mine and everything. Maybe the CS did not have invented Industrialization yet? Is there such a thing?

Anyways, I built Leaning Tower of Pisa and used the GE to rush Forbidden Palace.

I turtled my way through to Globalization (turn 222), with first WL vote at T233, but I missed few votes. I had only World Ideology (Freedom), but no World Religion yet. Also, France and Mongolia DOWed me about 6 turns before and diplomats were evacuated. My diplos finished making introductions to their new homes the turn of the vote, but I did not get the votes for them. So I guess they must be ready one turn before the vote. Mongolia was willing to sell me his World Leader votes, which was a strong indicator that something like this would be happening :) So I had already started building bombers, and that was, what I did for the next 20+ turns (plus Manhattan Project, just in case). The bombers were my first units after my initial scout and archer.
Furthermore, I must admit I did not find the last two city states yet (until the DOWed me due to being France's ally) and two were occupied by Mongolia.

France settled in the Mountain pass. All game long Napi was rather blunt with his attempt to start a war with me. Every time I saw dozens of his troops show up at my border, and he was always willing to go to war with Shoshone instead. A war he always lost. On his final (successful) attempt to start the war, he was really sneaky, and planned his attack on Kathmandu instead of me, so I did not see him coming. He also had a DOW agreement with Mongolia, so I could not have done much to divert him this time anyways. He was successful with taking Kathmandu, but I took it back rather quickly, with help of my Volunteer Army, that I got about 2 turns after the war started and upgraded to infantries. Napi was still running around with Great War Infantries.

So I used the war as a good excuse to liberate at least one of the city states. I missed a few turns to liberate the second one, but I did not need it anymore as I made peace with France and bought the votes of the last two CS. Meanwhile I also had passed World Religion, so I won with 43 of 39 required votes.

Vote:
Spoiler :
According to the mouse-over Korea has a city state ally, but actually, they do not have one. Guess that is was a bug. France has two from the last WL vote, Germany has world religion and Brazil world religion and world ideology.

Spoiler :
I count11 tiles profiting from Petra. There are probably maps where it is more useful, but I think it helped me a lot.

t280 DV
Spoiler :
Pulled it off pretty easily on the 2nd vote, I guess. I did make several mistakes - like I forgot to vote for myself as host on the last vote before the UN. So that hurt me 2 votes. Germany never did propose our religion, and at some point we didn't share it. I also could maybe have won it on the first vote - but I teched for Neuschwanstein before Globalization. Plus of course that late 2300 faith GP which didn't really do all that much.

Tithe did bring 154 gpt, and I'm pretty sure my GDP for this game is my highest on Deity. Ended with almost 7k in the bank. 196 fpt has to be near a high as well. All those lux and trade routes! And nice mountain ranges and CS speedbumps to keep Nappy and Otto at bay. I did build a Landmark for Otto, plus gifted him a lux once Ideologies hit. And the host modifier stayed, of course. I gifted Nappy 1 early, another at Ideologies, and one more near the end just to keep him Friendly. They were both easy to war bribe.

Nappy had 5/6 SS parts built, Otto 4/6.

Of course this map was easy, but my game shows the strengths of playing a Small Diety variant (Liberty Wide) - playing from behind on purpose if you can really get faith/culture rolling and go for gold, at the cost of science and pop, bagging Scholars in Residence early. Plus I aggressively forward settled both Pedro and Nappy, which is a no-no for Small Piety.

I did build CN Tower for funsies with a faith GE. I didn't have any tourism at all until I then settled the GMs that were milling around in the Towers. So lucky to have 3 civs go Freedom, but I would have been in great shape if more went Order, as I was prepared.

T301 Scientific Victory
Spoiler :

So my war against the French went sour when my xbows hit a wall of musketeers. I was forced to swap my SS cultural / half dominition strategy into a late scientific victory.

I was in good shape sientifically, but terribly behind economically, miltitary and culturary. After researched labs I bulbed my way to hubble and an significant science lead. I where only able to finnish half ratinoalism since I needed to get tier 3 freedom in order to be able to buy the spaceship victory.

I am pleased that I managed a victory even thou my initial plans failed even thou it was horribly late.

T312 Dom Victory. Genghis was the last to fall, ended up with bomber and tank spam and a blitz paratrooper doing the final honors. I'll post some screenshots when I get back to the PC. This was by far the most dominant I have ever felt on a deity map. At one point I was pulling 250ish fpt, 1k gpt, 1.8K bpt. The only real concern I had was that sejong was still teching like mad even though I took Seoul relatively early. His military rating skyrocketed towards the end with all of his info era troops. Protectionism, autocracy, prora, and completely eliminating Brazil (he didn't follow me into autocracy...) did wonders for my empire. First time in like fifty turns I had positive happiness and my empire exploded.

Another key investment as it turned out was my reformation belief. I thought it was going to be a waste of time but I ended up taking Jesuit education just in time to get research labs. My research went from 700ish bpt to over 1.1k in one turn.

Spoiler :
went liberty with 6 cities to block my neighbors from settling in the middle of my territory, got to freedom first and was followed by all my allies:Germany.Brazil, and Korea.
Good thing because I stayed low on culture busy bribing everyone to fight each other.
sold a lots of PT gold to all my allies, saved a bundle on Poca as he got killed in mid gameWon all the fairs and the space station
settle need the great reef towards the end for a seventh city as Pedro tried to get there first
got a religion early on and was able to buy a lots of GS

Nice run of victories there guys. I've updated the spreadsheet, which is now hosted at Box.com rather than Dropbox, and you can see it here.

I may have missed some stuff, so if you find errors, please PM me.

T282 SV

Spoiler :

Tried stealing workers for the first time, and man is it strong! Especially against Brazil who after losing 5 workers asked for a DoF the turn after peace was struck.

Full tradition, 2 city NC T88, Petra T80. First to pantheon and religion(desert folklore, pagodas, mosque, tithe, 25% faster spread). Settled 2 more cities. Opened aesthetics thinking of going CV but Brazil built the Sistine Chapel and Korea was wonder wh0ring so decided against it. Focused on science, GPT and FPT were flowing like crazy, bought schools and labs in all 4 cities. Freedom with Korea, faith bought a GE for SoL, Germany was running away with the game and kept denouncing me but no one ever DoWed me.

Germany had 4 SS parts done to my zero(not even Apollo) but I had 7 GS saved up and bought another GE with faith to rush Hubble. Bulbed all my GS, built the cockpit, bought the remaining 5 parts. Didn't have enough culture to finish off rationalism to get the free tech which would have saved me 10 turns, had a ton a gold and gpt all game but waited to late to get the cultured city-states as allies.

Well done Benzy19! I updated the spreadsheet and I see that this is your new best SV on the DCL, so double well done. Maybe you can try for a DomV on the next DCL so that you can have all VCs completed? :)

Yeah I suck at domination on Deity so I doubt that will happen anytime soon. I think my best chance at a DomV was with the Huns DCL, still on T25ish but not sure if I want to play it out. Domination is so much work and I'm lazy even when playing a video game lol.
