The Deity Challenge Line-up #28 - Russia

Turn 214 SV
Maybe I should skip bulbing scientific? It was 6 turns to get scientific in my game, and I had the money to buy building, not sure if I should have save the GS for endgame and just wait 6 turns.

If you have the cash to buy the Schools, yeah, bulb away, I think. The extra GPP just might let you squeeze out an extra Scientist too. You also get the city state Industrial Era boost faster this way + your second spy. Nice game.

T272 Domination Victory
Spoiler :
I don't remember the beginning of the game in detail because it was a long time ago. I actually abandoned this game, but later I continued and tried a different idea.
I did the classic tradition start with a 3 city NC and a 4th after that ). I settled south by lake Victoria, west on the river in the desert, and the 4th city was north to get the 2 salt tiles. I got Education on turn 98 with money to buy universities in 3 cites and a turn later in the 4th. I did not get a religion for this game.

The plan was to beeline Industrialization for 3 factories and then Dynamite and eliminate all opponents. There was a 3 coal tile in my borders so I was first to ideology and I picked Autocracy.

I actually managed to win the World's Fair (which helped me fill honor) and during that I Declared War on the Shoshone, but that did not work out well. During the war he got Flight, and I lost most of my army to airplanes. This is were I abandoned, but after a while I loaded my old saves and settled for peace with Shoshe. After regrouping and rebuilding some Cossacks and artillery, I DOWed the Iroquois, and got 3 cities from them, one in a peace deal.

In the mean time, Venice DOWed me, in a joint DOW with the Shoshone. By this time I had connected my oil and got flight so I managed to fend the invaders of with some Great War bombers. I made peace with the Shoshone as soon as they were willing, because I did not have the military to deal on both fronts. Venice was so behind, it attacked me with knights and riflemen.

I eliminated Morocco, and conquered Venice. By this time I was using bombers and rocket artillery.

After that I took care of India. and by the time I got to Byzantines, the Shoshone were controlling the other half of the map, and completely eliminated my friends the Zulu. I lost a buch of units while getting the Byzantines but I already had a lot of money so that did not matter.
I rush bought a bunch of nukes and, when I had my military in place I DOWed the Shoshone again, and nuked the biggest Shoshone cities. After that it was quite easy to get the capital.

As soon as I conquered the capital I traded a bunch of cities for Ulundi in a peace deal and the game was over.

During the game I managed to complete commerce for the extra happiness, and also got happiness tenants from Autocracy. I only kept cities with oil, aluminum and uranium, and razed all other cities. I did not have major problems with unhappiness, I only had unhappiness while razing 2-3 cities at once, but only once I went over 10.

Wonder wise I got: Oracle, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Big Ben (rushed with GE), Petra, Cristo Redentor (during World's Fair bonus), Neuchwainsten, Hubble, Pentagon, and Great Firewall (the last two were just because I did not have anything else to do).

This is a screenshot after the win 2015-05-16_00001.jpg

This was my first proper Deity win, I did the Babylon and India OCC from DCL and GotM, and I wanted a Domination Win. A science win could have been easier but I did not want one, because my previous games were science wins, and I wanted something different. I will try a cultural win next time, but I'm not sure I can manage that on Deity.

236 CV

Spoiler :

After doing a SV on this map a few days ago, where I wasn't very happy with my own performance, I found that I should test out CV since I've never completed a CV win on Deity before. I basically never replay maps or load saves so it felt a bit weird playing the same map, but I did change some strategies since I already from the get go had decided to do a CV.

My start wasn't as good as my SV, but this time around the Shoshone and Iroquis didn't settle cities all around me, and there was never an imminent danger of DOW from anyone, so I was able to concentrate on building up my civ. CV is very unusual to me, as I've rarely tried to do it - favouring SV and DomV in most of my games, and a 236 on this just seems ridiculous, and is far ahead of my previous personal bests on Deity, but that's just how good this start is.

Generally I just played for science and kept myself on the top half of the tech tree. I lost Uffizi to Byzantium, but other than that I got all the wonders I wanted. I had some militaristic city state allies, which provided me with units to sit on archeology sites, and with four cities I ran out of art-sockets to put all the artifacts in.

Thanks for the map, I might forward this to friends of mine who want to have a test on Deity. This map has a lot of good elements to learn from, all the while being so overpowered that mistakes are easily forgiven.

OCC SV T259
Spoiler :

I think I should probably be at 5 or over now, although a lot of my posts have been quite a bit necro-ish and long after the challenges went up! So they might not be on the spreadsheet?

A start like that was just crying out for OCC. Only trouble was keeping the ICS spammers off mah lawn! oh, and out of my city states. This took some pretty active "hugging" of settlers etc. and some peace chains and sing-alongs to save my CS buddies. Went for the quickest VC (in terms of time) considering my current pattern of struggling to find time for civ.

Active Hugging to keep my lawn pristine
Spoiler :

Peace chain, sing-song love ins to save my friends

Spoiler :
Insane start. I think, like everyone else I got more ruins than I ever have before. T2 or 3 I stepped on a culture ruin for a T5 Tradition. Two volunteers from Venice decided around T20-25 that they'd much rather come and build tile improvements on my beautiful, salty earth than stick around with the old coot. I dont think he even saw them go! Made peace with him and undersold some salt and we had a DoF by like T40.

Controlled the world salt trade for the entire game, until Pocatello started to get uppity towards the end of the and GG Bombed my northern most deposit.

This game was a huge love in from the word go. Venice, India, Byzantines, Morocco, The Iriquois and myself were in a huge six way love fest the entire game, so I had 5 RAs continuously from Education on, and a 6th for one or two rounds when Pocatello opted in. The Allies (except me, of course) spent the better part of the last 160 turns locked in war against Shaka, usually all at once.

Education T95-ish rush bought Uni
Astronomy T120-ish rush bought Observatory
Scientific Theory T145-ish rush bought School
Plastics T175 -ish rush bought lab

Oxford to Radio, Rat finisher to Satellites

3 GS bought from faith, one from PT, 2 from Hubble, final spawned GS cost 1100. (2 planted)
1 GE spawned used on SC, 1 from LtoP for PT, 1 from faith to build Hubble
3 GP spawned, 1 more from Hagia Sophia (2 planted)

Wonders: ToA (T42), Petra (T61), NC (T68), Oracle (T76), Hagia Sophia (T83), Sistine Chapel (T111), LtoP T129, PT T131, Forbidden Palace T138, can't remember exact timings for Modern Era wonders, but had a field day here - Broadway, Eiffel Tower (both during WC bonus), Statue of Liberty, Christo Redentor and Neuschwantstein cause why not!)

Social Policies - Tradition (All), Patronage to Scholasticism, Rationalism to Secularism and Free Thought, Freedom [Avante Garde, Civil Society, Universal Healthcare, Universal Suffrage, New Deal], Rat - Sovereignty, Commerce [Wagon Trains, Merc Army, Mercantilism], finish Rat, extra Freedom (incl. Space Proc.), finish Patronage and Commerce.
Spoiler :

The start was pretty hectic, had to buy a heap of tiles to get some of those beautiful hills for max production on some of these wonders. Got the Krepost out pretty early (bought whilst building Petra) to help with these costs. Had so much money coming in that I just bought everything, was loaned up to the hilt most of the game until probably 40 Turns after plastics.

There was a long time between plastics and victory, don't know whether that is because I was beaker limited being OCC, and I guess I shouldn't have used Rat. finisher and Oxford where I did. Could definitely have finished sooner, if I had gone Globalisation would have won T249 vote.

whooooooah ! Wanted to play Russia for a while and seeing THAT starting location, i know what i'm doing after work :wow:

Spoiler :

Fairly standard tradition turtle game. I had a strong start and great gpt from the beginning. T79 4 city NC, but ended up only getting plastics on turn 191. The biggest issue was my neglecting culture. I didn't have enough cpt to finish rationalism and get the 3rd level tenet of freedom for the end, even with stockpiling GWs, so I had to hard build all the parts. Pocatello was interested in my lands all game, and a defense pact with the Iroquois staved him off somewhat, but he still DoW'd me at the end. It wasn't too difficult to hold him off until the spaceship launch though. I'm improving my SV times, but there's still a long ways to go!

Russia goes to space....

Spoiler :
Managed to keep Hiawatha busy until his late push 10 turns before the end. It was inevitable...He spread like a virus and I was paying him to do so...so I could stay safe. Adopted Autocracy to get the military up n running because I knew what was coming. Zulu followed so we wiped out the Shoshone in the meanwhile, Zulu taking the final city. It mattered not as both got denounced by all the nations and research agreements went to hell. Gandhi and Theodora went Freedom and their culture pushed me into unhappiness for a while until I got Prora done and adopted more happiness. Hiawatha, Morroco and Venice went Order so it was a real tension that resulted in denouncements and wars :)

Spoiler :

Not once, in all of my games in Civ5, have I ever had a meaningful Defense Pact offered or received. I had given up trying ages ago.

Is there a trick here?

Defensive Pacts are a terrible idea, IMO. They sometimes don't even work how they're intended.

Well, it was a fun game even though i end the game at -16 happiness due to Carthage pushing very hard in tourism. I still think i have a problem with early culture production as social policies wise, i have full trad, commerce opener, patronage opener, and 7 in liberty. Which seems pretty "meh" to me. Decided to build all artistics guild quite late and put citizens only when i was about to speed up getting the +2 BPT for each specialist policy. Pretty sure i should have filled those guilds way earlier even though i'm sure it allowed me some more scientists.

With LTOP, picked a scientist as SC was already built and i didnt see any point using a GE on PT as no one went for rationalism.

I think i could have done better as i popped 2 scientists to get the final tech for the spaceship parts. Which means i was still building\buying pieces (including rockets) after having all the tech i needed. So think i could have shorten that win by 5 to 10 turns maybe. Got overall maybe 15 GS, created 3 academies, popped the rest, mainly on last era tech (one on plastic, insta rush bought labs 2 in cities, build one in 3 turns in the capital)

Anyway, went the Petra road (Turn 65 or so), missed the oracle (built between turn 85/90, was quite surprised), NC 4 cities at turn 90, hit education around 105, scientific theory around 145 and plastics around 190 i think. Then got LTOP, PT, Eiffel Tower (thought it would help defend from tourism but nope. Well happiness was still nice), CR, BB, NeuschW, SOL. Comparing with Nutella, i'm wondering if Petra was actually a good idea for a SV on this map. Capital wont miss food\hammer anyway, even desert trad doesnt seem too necessary as you will save enough for 2 GS with faith with minor FPT. And the 10/20 turn you can save on NC can go a long way in the end. Also, makes oracle a sure thing when skipping petra which is always good for the GS point and early massive CPT boost. anyway, Huge congrats to Nutella for the 214 SV !

After Plastic went for chemistry\fertilizer, then for astrononomy for 3 observatories, then beelined for satelites, then the spaceship rockets tech and then the engine.

Pretty peacefull game overall, no one DOWed me and i DOWed pocatello and hiawatha once each. Very soon vs pocatello when he settled just east from my capital. I thought this was gonna be a problem later on and decided to act with the support of Belgrade. Took the city and insta-selled it to Venice so it makes a buffer between poca and me.

For hiawatha, he was getting destroyed by Shaka after i payed him to DOW him (morroco decided to dow as well) and i took and raze one of Hiawatha's cities just to be able to buy the coal he "border-stole" from me with that city.

Fun game, though i was pretty close to go and kick Carthage's ass at the end just because she decided to make my end game a happiness hell.

Screenshot in spoiler. Beakers are low cause i killed all science focus in specialists to get more gold and rushbuy spaceship parts. Was closer to 1300 BTP

T229 Science Victory

Spoiler :

Enjoyed playing Russia. Felt that +1 prod from horses had a huge impact on the early game.

Beelined to Currency for Petra, but lost it to Gandhi on T56
Finished NC on T76 and reached Education by T106

Went for 6 cities with observatories in 4 of them.

Adopted Order Ideology on T151

Reached Plastics T173

Was bribing Shaka all through the game to fight Shoshone and Hiawatha

SP :: Tradition, Patronage till Consulates, Rationalism, Order

Wonders :: Oracle, Maachu, LTOP, PT, Forbidden Palace, Kremlin, Hubble

Religion :: No Religion

WC :: WF, Wasn't able to pass Science Funding as I had to use my votes to fail IG

I was wondering how Gandhi got Petra in his capital without a desert tile around. Am I missing something? If anyone wants to have a look I am attaching the save file post satellites.

Mountains are terrain features. Hit F10 and you can see that Gandhi has a desert mountain to the SE. The identical looking mountain to the E is a glassland mountain. Yeah ...

That is not a high value Petra.

Turn 217 SV, I am pretty sure I could have gotten a Sub 200 win if I didn't end up in three wars and a lot of angry neighbors. Also during the end game Shoeshoe came in with a swarm of Great Generals and started to eat up my land near Moscow.
It is the most absurd thing I ever saw.. I had to dow on him after he had taken land with 7 and still had three left :wow:

Angry neighbors meant a lot less trading.. which hurt, especially for the gold needed to buy science buildings and parts..
