Fall of Rome scenario - Roman score

Hi guys, quick question.

In the Fall of Rome scenario, how are Roman score counted? They are added to form a grand total, only the highest one counts (thus giving both a team victory) or they act separately, which means only one of them can win?

I only played out that scenario once and they're counted separately, Eastern Rome won in that game, I was randomly assigned one of the barb civs

So if I'm playing as West Rome I should only sit tight and hope that my teammate gets crushed so he doesn't over score me?

No, team victory rules apply, so if East Rome wins when you are playing West Rome, you also win. (Provided you don't get completely wiped off the map before the time limit)
