So I know this game might not be particularly impressive to some of the folks who frequent here but I wanted to come gloat about a win I had as I've been lurking here for tips for some time. I've been playing the franchise for about two years now, very inconsistently off and on, but on my most recent excursion into the turn based strategy simulator I've finally managed to "get it".

Part of this has to do with my learning to utilize/be involved with game-related forums like this one as well as real-time experience from playing the game for an extended period of time. But for whatever reason when I most recently picked the game up, I finally, as I said, "got it".

I've managed to snag time victories (based on score after running out the clock), domination vics (conquering all of your opponents with war-mongering), and cultural victories (completing 5 social policy tiers and completing the "utopia project"), but the two victory styles that have eluded me were Technology (I had one on IV but if I remember correctly it was on an easier difficulty) and Diplomacy.

Until today. I finally got my first tech vic (which from my reading seems to be one of the most difficult). This was based on a game where I finally began to comprehend the effect of "happiness" and it being an integral part of growing your empire. But in that game I had no focus; and, again, from my reading, plotting out what victory you intend to achieve before you even begin your game is the key to success.

Now this is not anything to brag about to veteran Civ players, I still feel it warrants bragging about given my history with the franchise. That being said, here are some notes about my win.

Basic game setup:
Civ: Nebchadnezzer II, who has a tech related bonus of spawning great scientists at a 50% higher rate
Map Type: Continents, which in this game put me on an island, enabling me to have free reign over my immediate surrounding environment due to not being attacked or threatened whatsoever with my expansion
Map Size: Standard (Eight Civs, all of whom were on friendly terms with me shortly after having discovered them)
Difficulty: Prince (which is Civ's "Normal" difficulty)
Speed: Quick (which runs slightly quicker than a "normal" game [but still took me about 12 hrs to complete])

Other notes:
I entered the Industrial era in the late 1600s, about 300 years or so ahead of schedule (compared to actual history)
I launched my rocket (the way you achieve a tech victory) in 1998 (or so, been drinking and can't remember 100% all the numbers in this post)
I had next to no army, despite Caeser's comments when I would approach him being "greetings, I have heard of your mighty armor. The villains of the world should tremble at your might"
The most developed military unit I ever had was a longswordsman
I never got research labs before I began the apollo program
I was not attacked whatsoever, nor did I attack anyone else
I buddied up with 2-3 city states when it was convenient but let the relationship degrade once I no longer needed them
I concentrated far more on Happiness and growing my cities than I did on specifically Tech-focused actions (bulding libraries, public schools, universities, etc), as I had much more success by running pretty much as many research agreements as possible at all times
I wound up getting future tech before completing my rocket, despite having cut out all science specialists and moving my cities towards production focus upon having completed the Apollo Program
I also did not have any factories in place before the ability to create spaceship factories

The game was mostly a lot of luck but I feel like my finally gaining an understanding of the game's core mechanics is what allowed me to have such a fantastic game and I hope this will lead to a continued success as I have had much more losses/unfinished games than wins in the past couple of years since I started with Civ IV.

Anywho, just feeling like my Civpeen is pretty spectacular tonight.

EDIT: Just realized I shoulda edited this a bit more as its kind of a repost from another forum I frequent, but you guys get the point I'm sure.

Congratulations! :) Civ 5 is the best game I've ever played and I've played a ton.

I'd suggest you focus your games around standard speed / continents for a while. I think this is the best balanced option of the few.

And it's not actually as easy to pull off as people might make you think. Diplo/domination/utopia (though i usually turn the last one off) are much easier in my experience up to emperor. Esp diplo.

There are a lot of people on the boards who have been playing science heavy builds since their first Civ game and they're all raging about how 'Science is still king' or whatever.. I doubt most of them have even had a diplo victory yet. :)

To be fair, diplomacy victories are 80% science :p.

Well.. It's been terribly easy for me to win diplo at king with all civs I've played and I don't focus on science explicitly. It's always been much easier for me to win the diplo. The tech difference is not that small actually and you don't need much production as well, which is quite important. You prob need at least 60k more science points to unlock all the required techs for science victory, so I'd say diplo is not that science dependent. At least it doesn't really need hardcore science builds, but usually more attention to detail - doing all the city state quests diligently and micro-managing the spies well too and overall playing a solid game in all directions.
