Playing as Arabia, on King, large Earth, 10 civs (me and England included), 20 city states.

Just passed one of my caravels by Englad's coast and saw the dude standing there. Lizzy has 5 points in patronage, but I didn't know MoV could be among the GP that CS's can ocasionally gift.

Just felt like sharing the event, cheers!

An English merchant of Venice was gifted to them by a patronage city state ally. That's the only way a non venetian ai can get a merchant of Venice since ais don't usually gift units.

I've had a few of those playing a non Venetian civ. There is one downfall and that is if you buy out a CS that someone has pledged to protect they consider that you killed them.

Are you able to buy a CS with it? I thought is only a boosted Gm, so you can get more influence and gold. Didn't know you can buy the Cs if you are not Venice ...

You can buy a CS with a gifted MoV.

I've had this happen before. Seldom have any idea what to do with it. Usually just use the doubled trade mission to gain a new ally and a bunch of cash; call it a neat windfall. Buying a city state doesn't have the same interest as there's no telling whether I want a new city at whatever point in the game it happens.

FYI: you can also Khans this way too.
