I'm on a Mac - Yosemite, installed the latest update, and Civ 5 is still crashing immediately after I open it. No windows even pop up. Any advice?

Hi, welcome :wavey:

Have you contacted Aspyr Support? There are no official developers on this forum, only enthusiastic amateurs, so even with a crash log we can't do much to help in this sort of situation.

I've been crashing too; I've saved the message and posted below. It is split up because it has too many characters to fit in reply:

Sorry, without access to the code it's not possible for anyone here to interpret the crash log. I do recommend contacting Aspyr Support.

To the OP--do you have the Apple Store version or Steam? I see that rover6695 has the Steam version.

Have you tried to reinstall?

Is it crashing or just not launching.

What are the specs of your Mac?

I am by no means an expert (and I can't read nor understand crash logs).

****
As an aside to AlanH: Alan do you have a good email address to Aspyr for support. I only ask because twice in the last month Civ V has not launched and quits. I tried to re-download from the Apple Store but apparnently my purchase was so long ago it doesn't show up in the recent purchases.

Thankfully, I have a clone of my HD (and an older clone on a firewire drive). And I was able to drag over that game's app to replace the bad one. I got the message (after several launch failures) that the game was corrupt. Dragging the app from one of the clones fixed it, but it still bothers me that I couldn't reinstall from the Apple Store. They said to contact Aspyr.

EDIT: Civ BE did the same thing last night. Message that the game was corrupt. Thankfully I was able to re-install from the Apple Store.

Very weird that in the last month both are suddenly corrupt.

I bought Civ 5 from Steam in August 2014...should I be safe to uninstall and then go to STEAM and re-install?

I have the Apple Store version, and am not familiar with steam. But isn't there a way you can check the integrity of the files through steam? I always see that advice given to PC users.

I have used http://support.aspyr.com/hc/en-us in the past. There's a Submit a Ticket option there that usually gets a reply in a day or three.

I'm surprised your purchase doesn't show up in the App Store, it can't be older than mine. Do you have more than one Apple ID? If so then check the other one(s). I have two, unfortunately, and I have to check both of them, as different apps were bought on each one.

Yes. Go into Steam and right click the game in your Library page. You should shave an option called something like "Local Files" Select that, and you can then choose to remove local game files. You can then select the game to download it again - lots of :coffee: required while that happens!

Hey Alan--I just have the one Apple Store ID. And I bought Civ V originally in 2012. And purchases all the DLCs and newer versions. It's weird that it no longer shows up in purchases. When I got that error message that it was corrupt, my only options were to purchase. Thankfully I had my backups and was able to drag the app over to my main drive.

BE shows up as purchased, but not Civ V. Hopefully it won't show as corrupt anymore.

I suggest you contact Apple Store support? That shouldn't happen.

Mine still shows up in my Purchases list when I'm signed in with the correct ID, and is dated June 2011.

Well when I bought CIV 5 in 8/2014...it was for my PC. I got my mac this past May. Should that matter?

Well, I just did this 2x...and both times upon trying the game again, it crashed with the same error.
It took maybe 15 minutes, tops, for the install both times.

Just submitted ticket to aspyr.

Thanks, Alan.

EDIT: I found it. For some reason it was "hidden" and I had to unhide it. It was the only one hidden.

I had to log-in and check my account and then manage hidden files. I googled to find that out.

^^That is a real possibility. Try to launch without any mods. If it launches, then it's going to be trial and error to find out which one is not compatible or conflicts with another mod.

I'll be interested in the result.

As I understand it, when you launch Civ5 it comes up without mods loaded, and you have to go into the Mods screen and proceed from there to load mods. Or you can attempt to load a save that requires mods.

But the crash appears to be happening during the pre-game screen, before the game even loads. The crash is happening in an app called CivilizationVsub, which means the main game code has probably not even started yet. so I can't really see mods being involved here.

I'd be more inclined to ensure that all preferences are deleted - those are the user-related data files that are likely to be read during the pre-game phase. Or you could try creating a new Mac user account, logging into Steam and launching Civ5 from that account. It should then start cleanly, with no preferences files installed. If that works, then delete the Civ5 preference files in your main account.

I'm also suspicious about the 15 minutes that it takes to reinstall Civ5 on your system. What kind of Internet connection speed do you have?

High speed.
Yea I thought when I deleted CIV all files would be gone, including mods, which makes me wonder if somehow the whole thing is not totally deleted?

Part of me thinks I should delete CIV AND STEAM then re-install?

Please move your saves folder to your desktop and delete the entire Civilization V folder from Documents/Aspyr.

Next, right click (ctrl+click) Civilization V from the Steam Library menu and select Properties. Under the Local Files tab, select Verify Integrity of Game Cache.

Then, repair your disk permissions (if you have not done so already). To do this, Open up your hard drive, open the Applications folder, go to Utilities, and launch 'Disk Utility'. Under 'First Aid', select your main hard drive volume (usually labeled 'Macintosh HD') and hit 'Repair Disk Permissions'. Once this is complete, reboot your Mac.

Relaunch Civilization V and then exit out of the game. Replace your saves folder to its original directory to resume your game progress.

So I went ahead and did all BUT the last part...replacing saves folder.

What I did was before deleting the CiV 5 files from Aspyr was copy the:
-saves folder/mods folder/moduserdata/maps folders to my desktop.

I then went ahead and did everything, just launched CIV.
It works, so now I am wondering...should I start from scratch OR should I move my saved folder there?
-Would I need to move the MODS as well along with MODUSERDATA and MAPS?

If so how?
If not, make sense to start from scratch and get all new mods, begin a fresh game?

You've done a full delete and reinstall. So Just put the folders back where they were. The reason for removing them while you reinstalled was only so that you didn't delete them, and can now reinstate them.

I'd be interested if that worked.

My old 2007 iMac was slacking on a lot of things, so I got a new one. I'm starting up on a new 27" Retina iMac. I booted from an external back-up, and verified everything I should.
The App started up fine, but when I'd made my choices and started the game at start-up it was crashing as explained above.
I rechecked my mods and found two that appeared to be causing that ( R.E.D. extreme and Era Settlers), but after the game was running I was getting memory issues (at least, that's what the warning window said) and after a couple more turns a frozen screen.
Haven't got past turn 34 yet.
I'm thinking of a re-install now, but don't fancy the hassle. Any help would be appreciated. I don't think it's a problem I need to bother Aspyr with, probably just some settings I've missed on the new hardware.
