What difficulty do you play on?

I play on Prince, and after my first two games, I wanted to go back to G&K too. But then, on my third, I really tried to make it work, and I did. I expanded only when I had excess happiness, and gold income in the green. I only started taking on another Civ after I had got 6 cities up, and had a good happiness buffer. I let them sue for peace after taking a couple of their cities, built my happiness buffer back up, and then took them out. Then I expanded again, got a happiness buffer, and went after another Civ.

I kept one close neighbor to my south friendly (and used them for Trade Routes), while taking over the rest of the continent.

It now seems fine to me. You just have to modify the G&K tendencies and get with the BNW program.

Going back all the way to the original post, you can simply go to Other while on the in-game menu, then go to DLC and un-check BNW. Easy as that to go back to G&K.

Allow puppets and civ capitals to still act as gold generating trade routes up to a say mid game
