Anno Domini Gods and Kings

About the ships and colonies (because these are especially the concepts that seem the most important to me): I remind you that I speak mostly about the maps of the Mediterranean (east and west) that come with the mod and how these concepts apply to them, not any map generally.

The way things work right now do not allow the proper use of naval exploration, warfare and colonization the way it should be (for both historical and game-play reasons). I am just saying: give some reason for the military ships to exist (because now they are more-or-less useless) and some way for colonies to be able to thrive.

Hello

First of all hello to everyone and sorry for my English

I start this thread beacouse i'v got problem whit Anno Domini v. 4 mod
I'v got G&K and all DLC needed and I don't have any issues whith game. But when I start mod and try click "Start Game" the game crash and I'm back in Windows.

By the way I tried change resolution in game and lower graphics for mod
I tried open game in window and delete save games.

Please help or just give some advise because i haven't got any ideas

I find out one more strange thing when i immediately click "advanced setup" in anno domini, game crash but when I first start game in G&K and then click "advanced setup" in Anno Domini nothing happens until I try start new game

Hi JZF83 and welcome to Civfanatics.

Personally, I can't help you from a technical point of view - but hopefully someone else can assist. However, a couple of things to check. Have you deleted completely from your system any previous versions of the mod; also, are you trying to run any other mods alongside this one?

Thanks for the quick reply

Answers to Your Questions:

1. I haven't got earlier versions of the mod
2. This is the only mod I trying to run

JZF83 can you post 2 log files : database and lua?

to enable logging :
go in : Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5\ and open config.ini

- Inside this file,
- at the start of the file enable the fire tuner to connect to the game.
Change EnableTuner = 0 in EnableTuner = 1
- search for "LoggingEnabled = 0" and set that to 1
- Save the file and close it.

Start the game again to create the files.

The Database.log and Lua.log files are in :
...\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5\Logs

This are files after Launch Game

There's one thing I noticed while playing as Brigantia, but I have no idea if it is intended or not:
Enemy units next to a hill fort only take 2 Damage per turn.

I have the same problems of JZF83, wonder if he solved them?
Too bad, it is one of my favourites for Vanilla, despite the lack of custom policies (which I imported from Putmalk's :p).

Makes the game better than the original!
When I thought Civilization was getting boring and there was nothing else worth doing, i tried this cenario.
What a wonderful surprise. This is much more balanced than the original, has a lot more building and wonders.
There are several wonders and buildings to get faith and culture, so you are not stuck to that special and unique wonder, relieving a lot of pressure in the early game.

It's just a pity there is no equivalent to science victory, which makes it a bit boring at the end.
Although cultural victories are my preferred ones, they are always too slow to obtain, even if you work hard for them and use the wonderful Etruscan trait (-20% cost of policies!).
But the original makers should learn with you to make a better civ.

It's also a pity that you concentrate so much in british culture. You almost completely forget about iberian culture, like the original makers who never seem to remember about portugal explorers and what they did fot the western culture. Shame on that.
There's only one civ but by far with the pooerest trait of all. :(
Please consider the Vandals and especially the Lusitans (my native people, I'm portuguese by the way).
And give them fair traits, ok? :)
If you need ideias i might give you a few. ;-)

I also agree that the victory conditions should be better explained.
But hey, you've done all of this for free! So, what can i ask more of you and all the people who helped you? Nothing! I can only THANK YOU SO MUCH! You should earn more money than the original makers, who did a game fulll of bugs, somthing hard to find on your mod.

Speaking of which, perhaps a rare exception is this, but nothing important:
A weird thing always happens in the begining of the game, around turn 11 (or when the 3rd Policy is obtained).
Five cups of victory appear saying that I ranked 5#, 4th and got 0 zero victory points! :)
However, this does not seem to influence the game in any manner.
Bug?

All in all, I whish to thank you very much for this wonderful mod. :)
Please, please continue to support it.

Hi, I absolutely adore this mod and have great admiration for the work you've put into this, Rob.

I do have one minor gripe after playing my first game, and that is to do with the skirmisher unit. So, the Keshik is arguably the best UU from the main game along with the camel archer. Their ability to skirt in and fire before retreating is extremely good versus the clueless ai. Its 18 strength means that it remains the most useful unit for the bigger part of the game. From the moment you get them til the end of the game you're doing yourself a disservice by not massing them up when going for domination.

You've increased the bonus against mounted for the spearmen line, but this only serves to help the player, giving you help in taking down the opponents skirmishers/horse archers. But the AI isn't really able to use units in an effective manner, allowing you to steamroll them pretty effectively with enough skirmishers. They are the be all and end all of Anno Domini. It kinda ruins the fun for me, in that you will get that very same unit every game if you're planning on winning in the most effective way possible.
I was playing on immortal, btw

I guess I should try to be constructive and give a solution. I think some sort of nerf would be good. Maybe make the HA (horse archer) not have the ability to move after attacking, like in the real game. Then making the major upgrade being the ability to do so from HA to skirmisher, leaving the combat strength at 15 or 14. As it stands, why would you even get any archers when you have the HA line that does more dmg, has more movement AND can move after attacking.

Again, the ability to move after attacking is really strong on its own. Coupling that with a ranged strength of 18 is in this case overpowered, I think.

Love the mod otherwise. I thank you for your work.

Thanks for the comments! I am looking to make a BNW mod based on the Anno Domini mod I've already done, but there will be some amendments; not least, I will take into account the suggestions made in this thread.

This is the reason I've stopped making any further amendments to the G&K version. It works; I agree that certain things could have been done differently, but I will be concentrating on BNW from now on. What I am looking to do is make it even more ancient world based, running it up to about 300AD max, taking out civilizations which historically come later and making a bit more of the early tech tree. As an example, I aim to do two tiers of chariots - an ancient battlecart, upgrading to a chariot; perhaps even bringing in an elite chariot as a third tier. I intend to get to grips with unit making in Civ 5, then I'll be able to be in complete control of getting some more custom art into the mod. It'll be a quite absorbing project!

With that, do you think I should ask for a sub-forum for Anno Domini - or is that getting ideas above my station? There are currently no other ancient mods with their own forum (although there's other ancient mods!) and also I think that this mod could generate as much interest as some of the other mods with their own forums. Please let me know your thoughts - I presume I need to pm Thunderfall if I'd like to go ahead?

Speaking of BNW, I will, of course, make full use of the new trade route system - but has anyone any idea how I might implement the world council and the tourism system into the mod? I can see the world council working if it was a game based on the Greek city states (which, of course it isn't, but maybe a scenario could have it) and also I could see the tourism concept working if I was doing a game based on Rome and making the one empire great...perhaps these could be sub-games within the mod? Modify it so that the Greek factions could decide to join a league and decisions only affected them? Same with the British tribes? Mmmm...food for thought....

I wanted to say that I managed to have this work, but after I bought a brand new PC this weekend. I think this mod hasn't been tested on Windows XP and DirectX9 (JZF83 also has this setup), has it?

To be honest, I haven't because my own system has Windows 7 and DirectX11.

I guess as well the lack of response to my question about whether or not I should ask for a forum for Anno Domini really does give me an answer - it's a no (for now at least) ;).

I've played 2 full games now with this Anno Domini mod so I thought I 'let's give some feedback'.

General impression: very nice and good mod

Likes:
  • Artwork: nicely done units, leaders, wonders, etc.
  • Lots of wonders & buildings with nice effects
  • Well excecuted theme
  • Lots of civs to choose from, all with nice uniques
  • Well balanced units, wargame is nice

Dislikes:
  • Social policies: the social policies are unchanged compared to the base game of Civ5 G&K, which makes policies like '+25% science for factories' or '+1 happiness for universities, observatories & research labs' quite useless. My advice: change the redundant social policies to something useful.
  • Victory conditions: no scientific victory possible
  • Large differences in the AI capabilities: quite a few AIs (7/16 in two games) seem to have very big problems with making money (I played both games at immortal level at which the AI should be able to make enough money due to their bonusses) -> negative income entire game -> big science penalty entire game -> technologically backward AI -> too easy target to kill.

Final note: your mod seems to have a problem with the DX9 version of Civ5. I (and based on the comments in this thread also others) experience a crash to desktop every single time when I try to startup a game with the AD mod & the DX9 version of Civ5. When I use the DX11 version everything works fine...

Thanks for the feedback. Just one thing on the social policies; whilst they remain unchanged per se, when buildings are affected by a social policy, the building has been changed to one that is in Anno Domini and the written details changed to reflect that. So they're not redundant - factories, for example, are changed to foresters' huts.

I am looking to make some major changes when I do the Brave New World version of the mod and I believe that most, if not all, of your concerns will be addressed.

Looking forward to the updates when BNW comes out, this mod is pretty cool already. One bug (I think) - I randomly got the Nok as a Civ and I can't see any benefit to the Nok Warrior over the Archer (either in the unit or the 'pedia). Looking in the resources, I see that it is given "PROMOTION_BONUS_MELEE" - which, I think, does not exist, so thus the unit gets no special promotion. The closest promotion is "PROMOTION_FALX_ADVANTAGE" - which gives the same type of bonus that I presume the Nok Warrior was supposed to get, but is clearly for the Falx instead :)

What percentage bonus should the Nok have? I'm kind of enjoying toying with the tools, perhaps I'll create the promotion myself..

Thanks for your comments, metalhawk. I've looked into it and it's an oversight on my part. I'd used the bonus_melee promotion thinking it was one from the core game itself, but I've found it to be one I'd seen in another mod. To correct it, the promotions.xml should have the following code added:

<UnitPromotions>
<Row>
<Type>PROMOTION_BONUS_MELEE</Type>
<Description>TXT_KEY_PROMOTION_BONUS_MELEE</Description>
<Help>TXT_KEY_PROMOTION_BONUS_MELEE_HELP</Help>

<IconAtlas>PROMOTION_ATLAS</IconAtlas>
<PediaType>PEDIA_ATTRIBUTES</PediaType>

</Row>
</UnitPromotions>

<UnitPromotions_UnitCombatMods>
<Row>
<PromotionType>PROMOTION_BONUS_MELEE</PromotionType>
<UnitCombatType>UNITCOMBAT_MELEE</UnitCombatType>
<Modifier>20</Modifier>
</Row>
</UnitPromotions_UnitCombatMods>

<Language_en_US>
<Row Tag="TXT_KEY_PROMOTION_BONUS_MELEE">
<Text>Bonus melee</Text>
</Row>
<Row Tag="TXT_KEY_PROMOTION_BONUS_MELEE_HELP">
<Text>+20% [ICON_STRENGTH] combat strength when fighting against [COLOR_POSITIVE_TEXT]melee[ENDCOLOR] units.</Text>
</Row>
</Language_en_US>

I've tested this and it works. On reflection, it's too much like the Falx advantage; I'll look to change this for the Brave New World version of the mod ;).

Thanks, Rob. I took a stab at it before, but didn't make all 3 modifications. I assume this is actually UnitPromotions.xml, correct?

Also, I'd guess I need to make this change for all users in an MP game, eh?
