Western Hemisphere (huge) map

Why is it that no matter what Country you are you always start in South America just off Brazil?

If you want to settle in North America on this map you have to go north west for like 10 or so turns.

Also if you do go over to north america it takes considerably longer to back to Europe, the deep ocean border is much further up north than down south for north america.
