The City States of Greece

OOC: I don't really think that you can use a wikipedia link as an IG argument :p

Edit: I still need to find out how long it will take to travel, and how much movement, I've gotta change my actions etc. depending on that :/

One hex per turn until horseback riding, accept on the off chance that they have fishing, in which case you can ride down the river too them.

OOC: And one turn is in-game turns or updates? :p I hope for the former

The population of Athens had been growing steadily for many years now. There had been calls for the Areopagus to be enlarged to allow it to better decide the destiny of so many people. The Archon heeded the call and instructed the priests to cast their auguries and allow the blessed wisdom of Athena to decide which family to elevate.

The pre-dawn light filtered through the window, accompanied by a soft breeze carrying the scents of the desert. Phillipos turned over in bed, still sleeping softly. He had performed the burial rites for his father the previous day and had been singing laments late into the night.
Suddenly a loud banging reverberated around the house, someone was knocking on the door.
"Wha', huh. F'the love o' the g'dess," said Phillipos, clearly not yet ready to be roused from slumber.
The knocking came again, louder this time.
"Oh come on, it's not even dawn," said Phillipos, exasperated.
Once more the knocking came
"XANTH!" yelled Phillipos, calling the family slave
Mercifully the knocking ceased, a few seconds later there came the sound of footsteps outside Phillipos chamber.
"Master," came the voice of Xanthippus, "there are some men from the city guard asking for you."
"Tell them I'll be there in five minutes and then help me get dressed."
A calculated fifteen minutes later Phillipos, properly attired in his chiton, opened the door. As Xanthippus and informed him three city guards stood outside.
"Phillipus Demandros, son of Solon?" enquired the leader
"Yes." responded Phillipos
"I have been ordered to escort you to the Archon's palace."
"For what reason?" demanded Phillipos
"My lord," responded the guard, "the goddess has selected the Demandroi to be raised to the Areopagus."

The sun had just peeked above the horizon as Phillipos and the guards strode through the city. Phillipos had left Xanthippus to guard the property and the women of the oikos. At the palace steps a group of the Archon's personal guard were waiting.
"These gentlemen will take you to the Archon," said the leader of the city guard, giving a quick salute, "good luck, my lord."
As the city guard went back into the city to go back on patrol the personal guard gestured for Phillipos to follow them. The personal guard were far more taciturn than the city guard and did not say a word the entire time they were escorting Phillipos.
Eventually they reached a closed door with a slave standing beside it. The escort stopped sharply and the slave approached Phillipos.
"You are the kyrios of the Demandroi?" he asked, Phillipos just nodded in response.
The slave slipped into the room. Through the door Phillipos could hear him speak.
"My lord Archon, Phillipos Demandros has arrived."
"Very well, show him in," came the response
The door opened wide and the slave said, "the Archon will see you now."
The guards escorted Phillipos into the room and before melting into the shadows.
Despite the early hour the Archon's table was piled high with wax tablets. He was reading a tablet in one hand whilst holding a chunk of bread in the other. To his left was a plate containing the rest of the bread and some cheese and an earthenware cup.
"Ah, Phillipos, I'm glad you agreed to come," said the Archon putting down the bread and the tablet as he stood to greet his guest, "would you care for some water?"
"Thank you, my lord" replied Phillipos
"Take a seat," said the Archon, indicating a low bench whilst gesturing for the slave to bring Phillipos some refreshment.
"May I ask what is required of me, my lord." enquired Phillipos
"Required? Nothing. But in Her divine wisdom Athena has selected your family to sit on the Areopagus. If you accept you will be expected to fulfill your duty to the polis by advising me, voting upon legislation to be submitted for my approval and any other duties I decide to delegate to Areopagus. If you accept there will be a ceremony in the Hall of the Areopagus, an oath of loyalty to the Megakyrioi Archons, the gods and the polis and a feast in your honour.
"So, do you accept?"
"I do, my lord." replied Areopagus Phillipos Demandros.

Usually I include it at the top of the City-Screen but this time I had to cut it off because when i was taking the screenshot I hadn't yet calculated expenses. So if Jehoshua wants to reveal it he can, he has the stats. He can find the actual number by adding all the surpluses and dividing by 5.

Is it correct that we have 256 gold at my disposal?

hmm, well I think I will save on spending it until just the right time. Of course any lords of Athens are free to make utterances in regards to money or any other thing that pops into their minds.

ooc: hehehe, *strokes pile of gold*

OOC: Idea: The “Olympic Games”.

Perhaps the Archon and the Areopagus can put on a great tournament consisting of one or more events. This would give the current people on the waiting list something to do. We could earn Drachma and/or Prestige so that when our character is born they have more status. The nature of these events is wide open, basically whatever seems appropriate to the game and amuses the ruling class. The Archon and the members of the Areopagus can create events and serve as judges. Anyone player common or noble may sign up and compete perhaps. Since the Olympics are held every several years beginning in ancient Greece, it might really jazz up the gameplay to have one or more contests going every turn more or less…

Thoughts?

If you do put all the "winnings" in one post so I can easily find them. And players cannot award prestige, but if there is any good RP I may award some. Any drachmas given will have to come from somewhere, they cannot be given out of thin air. Otherwise I am fine if the players want to organize this.

ooc: An Excellent idea, why didn't I think of it. A fight to the death amongst the prospective nobles in order to earn the position :p

OOC: I propose the Drachma come from the city coffers, by the Archon's mandate. Say 10D for a contest winner? Or 5, 3, and 2 for the gold silver and bronze?

As far as prestige goes, I believe three members of the Argeopagus are non-player characters (therefore Dot80 controlled). In this way, as part of the Argeopagus the Diety Dot80 could have a majority vote, if wanted.

Maybe the Archon and other players in the Argeopagus can vote on who wins the Drachma, but Dot80 and his characters control any Prestige award?

An "Award Ceremony" could be part of every turn conclusion.

These are all just ideas...

You have an interesting idea. I propose the following.

All the people on the waiting list enter into a competition of fighting to the death ( the form being like a tennis tournament where you have groupings and eventually end up with a grand final) where losers go to the bottom of the waiting list (to signify they died) as they come (so if you die early you lose very little, as you go further in the tournament your stakes get higher, for the gambling factor) until eventually you have one final grand fight to the death where the winner gets the top spot for entrance AND some cash given by the Archon when he comes in to the game, and the loser despite how far he has come loses everything and goes straight to the bottom of the waiting list.

Such a tournee would be acceptable to me. :mwaha:

I'd be ok to that. Though it would be a 50/50 gamble for everyone because none of you have fight skill.

Your game sounds more like Gladiators than Olympians...

Maybe thats because it is ;) regardless my game is designed to maximise my personal amusement as all the waiters roll the dice in the hope of getting top spot. Most especially I anticipate especially the grand final where the loser of that final bout ends up down, out and at the bottom of the waiting heap. Oh if we have an odd number of people I suppose we could just have the next to enter according to the current list wait the tournament out and battle the victor as a grand-grand final, to make the final battle that much more amusing.

So yes we will do that. That is if the majority of the support my game in the affirmative. Because afterall this surely is compulsary on all of you to be apart of should it come into being and I wouldn't want to force you to do it without your consent. I remind you this is all for the good of th game ofc and that all credit for the idea of such a tournee comes from Aaronius :p
