Speaking of esoteric knowledge, did you know that Submarines can move under the ice cap? I didn't even realize it until I asked one to move around a continent, and it went below the ice!
They're invulnerable there. Nothing can enter the impassible ice other than planes, which can attack the sub, but not destroy it. I now use the ice as a staging ground for subs when near the poles, and enemy ships can't kill them.
Also, if you didn't know, Spies can conduct sabotage missions while on a sub (to destroy naval resources). Makes it much harder to maintain sea-based oil supplies than the land-based versions, as your pack of subs can wipe out any ships trying to escort work boats to the resource
