RR11 - Takeshi's castle

Had a look at the scenario and in a very casual way ran like 12 or 13 turns. Did some shuffling of tiles, SW city took rice from cap, cap took rice from NW city as well as iron and bronze. Made SW city a good place for whipping some galleys, made cap a nice bureau capital, even these first turns. Took 2 of 3 chinese coastal cities amphibiously (!) on turn of DoW, the most southern coastal city turn after. All 3 were defended by a mere archer (!!). The interior cities had longbows though and when I peeked with WB, also a musket build. So likely the coast can be taken soon and easily, then probably need some time for reinforcements, but really China shouldn't pose too much of a problem.

And welcome to lymond ofc. :)

I've been peeking in here regularly but wasn't sure if yall were really hiring. Looks fun. Reminds me a little of the RFC Japan start. I'm in SGOTM13 as well, but I think I can find some time for this and Lalibella since the pace is more casual. Heck, Brian, how many do you have going on? (I loved to do an FFH one day, by the way)

Anyway, if yall will have me, I'm game. Now I know where Rolo's been hiding.
 Yup, I've been here all the time :D

Welcome to the show BTW :p I'll add you to the initial post

BTW I think I'll start the game tonight , but probably will not post it today.

Thanks...

My 2 cents on the start:

I like Sailing> Alpha and the Bureau/Slavery switch. However, Slavery/Pac might be better. The cap is not exactly a great Bureau cap at the moment and Vass will give our Sams some juice for China. We can whip a LH in cap an start running some specialists.

Normally not much on scouts, but getting one out fast and plopping it in China would allow us to meet other AIs to the West quickly to open up some tech trades. Not sure if huts are on but there usually are some on the islands south.

I imagine Oracle will be hard to get. We can probably trade around for Guilds/Banking and possibly take PP or Rep Parts with Lib, which I think we can get. Then off to Rifling for the Toku's "other" UU.

Once we get more land and food in China/Korea, Nat-Rifles may be a good call.

Here we go! Returned from my short trip and ready to kick some asses!

I agree to the suggested civic switches (bureau/slavery) as well as for the sailing first. But as we're going to war soon calendar for the extra happiness should be next. Afterwards going lib might be an idea.
But what's about a settler to get the northern spot settled?
And (even though you'll do it on your own rolo) switch at least the iron and the copper spots to our cap for some more :hammers: out of bureau! Kama will get it's production out wo the :whipped:!

Sorry, but when I was going to post the game set I noticed that I had, by mistake, adopted serfdom instead of slavery in t0 :cringe:

Will replay tonight ( and I'm sad since China was already down to 2 cities  ... anyway IMHO it is repeatable )

Ok, after playing almost to the end of teching calendar and noticing that I couldn't whip because I had reolted in t0 to serfdom ( :wallbash: ) , I decided to start all over again ( well, not all over again. Didn't had to cut the mountains in America to broke the Incans free and to connect both Americas by land again )

Anyway, first thing to go , get the civics right this time :
Spoiler :

Then I OB'ed with the Chinese and the Koreans, set Sailing to tech and changed the iron and the copper tiles to the cap to work. All stuff already discussed before the turnset.

Some more turns gone in boring move of units towards the south of the country and finally we got the galley into the Chinese borders. No Marco Polo bridge was needed for the next action :p
Spoiler :

As fortune favours the bold, we decided to not lose time and attack from the ship. The alternative was to lose a turn and maybe face a whipped or upgraded LB. Not worth the risk to wait.
Spoiler :

And fortune favoured the bold indeed ( the odds were low, 40ishs % )

As we didn't lost any of the Samurai that we had landed, we decided to move the healthy one to the interior while the galley picked 2 more samurai to attack the southern chinese coast. We managed to attack both the target cities in the same turn and we got a unexpected bonus:
Spoiler :

Besides contacting Sury, we managed to attack and conquer both cities ( due to the fact that neither city upgraded their garrisons or whipped defenders ). No units lost... and btw we OB'ed with Sury.

The Sury screen shows that QSH had 4 cities ... as we had only captured 2 at the time and QSH started with 7, it means that the Mongols already started their northern action. This probably explains partly the lack of chinese counterattacks ... that and the fact that China took Lhasa some turns later ( it means that any free units should had been moing through Tibet ).

That is the justification for what I did next: as the Mongols were alredy in the moe in the North, I suposed that I had to move fast. I made my maths and the faster way of getting to the last coastal Chinese city was to gamble and leave Lin'An undefended. The city had only one archer defending, so it was possible that the Mongols could snatch it with a keshik raid ( not that likely, but ... ) or even see a musket/LB appearing if we didn't moved fast.

So, carpe diem again and again we get a unexpected result:
Spoiler :

OB'ed with him as well... it will surely help to have their territory open for the Korean invasion later or even to manouver vs China

BTW Khmer and GK are in war and the first wanted us to jump in the war as well:
Spoiler :

Thanks, but no thanks. Atleast for now ... China is piling units in the last cities they have ( I launched a lone samurai to try to see if there was any easy picking and both cities had a LB + Chu-no-ku in garrison ... and I seen a musket going south and trashed a cat while getting back to safety ), so we are still not exactly done with China. And as we had 5 samurai in China proper and 4 cities to protect, even China would have to wait a little until a proper offensive could be pursued against the interior .

I finished the set with Calendar:
Spoiler :

At the same time I disembarked our first 2 cats in the mainland and managed to get our second galley to the Satsuma area , so bringing LB's to China will not be complicated . We have some in the queues, so keep that in mind.

Some more intel:
Spoiler :

I :wallbash: a little when I noticed in the end of the set that GK had Alpha and that we could had traded for it sooner. But it is not a big deal ... unless we want to extort some techs in a peace deal with China. More on that later. The real usefulness of having Alpha now would be knowing what techs Wang has. They don't start with Gunpowder, but I'm pretty sure they could have traded it with China . Anyway, if we trade with GK for Alpha, the least we can give him is Machinery, and this is not exactly a fair deal ( from our point of view ).

Our F1 screen is a little diferent of everything I seen in between the set, since we had a major boom in happiness with the advent of calendar + the linking of the gold mine in the southern tip of the main inland. There are no issues in that regard. The only thing to take in account is that the Kamakura LB was whipped this turn. We will need more 2 to garrison what we conquered in China... and probably more a couple of cats ( have only 2 now ). The only cities with barracks are the cap and Kamakura ( that has a huge food surplus, perfect for whips ), so take that in account ( we would like another barrack in Hakata, but that is already queued ( note the forest being chopped near it, btw )

To end, I queued Engineering as the next tech, but IMHO it is not necessarily the best next tech. We can make a case for a lot of techs, like Alpha, compass or even Lib ( btw, Oracle has gone to the fishes in the turn before the last )... this needs discussion

Thys is up, nocho is on deck.

Looks good to my mind. I suppose we're keeping the pressure on China, and then going after the Koreans? from the looks of it strategically that would be the strongest option.

Let me see, what matches we had today... Sporting Lisbon - Benfica 0-2, okay, that doesn't sound completely awful :D. Despite all those Portuguese guys playing. :mischief: Which of the two teams is your favourite? Or you don't care, but as a guy from Lisbon you have to watch it anyway to be able to have a chat tomorrow at the coffee machine? :D

Will patiently await your report. :)

I don't care ( my father is a heavy supporter of Benfica, but I don't care much about it ) , but as a Portuguese ( since both teams have fans countrywide ... this is far diferent from R. Madrid or Barça in that regard ) I have to watch it to be able to have a chat at the coffee machine :p

@ Brian

I think that we should continue the war vs China, but we are very streched in terms of troops and we will need some turns to produce and ship the garrisons to replace the Samurai we have there now. I've picked a glance on the nearest 2 cities from China and I've seen LB+Chu-no-ku in cities in hills ( and one of them is completely impossible to attack without crossing a river ). We can't simply send a lone samurai to take it ,as when they were just 1 archer in each city.

I'm gonna have to bow out as my civ pc just kicked the bucket finally, refusing to even post. The notebook I have now has never had a real graphics card ever and I just do not play enough anything anymore to try and get a new gaming rig going :(

Anyway, have no doubt you guys will stem roller this one and I will enjoy lurking.

kick some butt!

Cheers!

Sad to read this.. But hopefully you'll make up your mind soon and will return soon ;)
BTW: Got it and will take a look at the save this evening.

Lurker's comment: my installation of BUG may very well be old, but it shows 94 commerce in the financial advisor while you in fact have 84; does anyone else have that ?

If this is indeed a bug, I'd search it around civics (applying bureaucracy twice would indeed have this effect)

Ok even though the report is not up yet I'll start on some thoughts:
First tech: This seems kind of no brainer as this seems to be the only tech that could help in nearer future. But in case we go for alpha first we could leave Qin Cenngdu, vasall him and get gunpowder out for this..
About the queued infra: The lib in Kama seems to make sense as the silver will get up soon, but why are rather building barracks than finishing the lib in Haka? we've got gold down there and this could speed up our resurch quite a lot. And the lighthouse in Lin also doesn't make any sense to me with +9:food: but neither a forge nor a lib to hire some more specs.. And as there are clams and rice nearby this seems kind of perfect for a GP farm. So for the moment I'd rather go for lib first. And in Guang I'd rather go for a monument first to get the culture running a way earlier!
Forces: We've got three cats and seven samurai at the moment.. After reinfoceing the border cities with the needed LBs I think we can push further on Dongjing. After that we may want to vasall Qin 'cause that way he may be quite useful! Only prob would be the "We yearn to join our motherland" unhappiness.. And so we could find the time for building a settler to settle the northern part of our island! And we can start to build up our forces towards Wang..
Improvements: Connecting silver next seems a no brainer, but the cottage on the hill 1NW of Haka I can't understand at all! But we need more workers so after the LBs and the settler our cap cuold start on another one. And Lin as well (even before the lib..).

Ok any additional thoughts?

No vassaling ! That will make things harder when we want to vassall others later ... in best we can make peace with him in between, extort something and repeat later. China, Korea and Khmer must die, period. India probably too. The rest is discussible.

Silver linking is not a priority ... I explained why in the report: we have a good surplus of :) now.

The cottage 1NW of Hakata was already there in t0 :D I had neither the time of the inclination to make cottages in there, neither the time to undo the ones that are there in odd places:/

Kama library is simply a hammer overflow dump. The city is being used as a whip haven ( see the  from whip duration ) and I've been dumping the overflows in the library. The lighthouse in Lin ... well, same reason: more food for the whip and as it has 2 seafood in the BFC ... BTW we need a WB for Guangzhou . I can see the case for a monument there, but IMHO it would be better to get a lib there since there is nothing outstanding in the 2nd ring that it can be easily picked via border pop.

Remember, this is a war oriented SG. We have a top of the pop UU in this period and we can definitely smash the closest oposition with pure number weight, so IMHO there is no particular rush for start teching fast at this moment. Samurai + cats ( + pikes + knights in time ) will do for the time being ... hence whips >> specs for now.

Played my turns so far..
Not that much to report at all, but I think mainly good news:

IT:
As usual I started the set with some MM. Afterwards I whiped the barracks in Haka for two pops. Techwise I decided to go for alpha first and even though it might not be worth it I went binary resurch: Science down to 0.

1150:
Put science back to 100.

1160:
Whiped the lighthouse in Lin as well as a LB in our cap.

1170:
The overflow in Lin went into a LB to take the stationed samurai back into our attack forces. The overflow in our cap went into another samurai.

1190:
Alpha in and this time I went on with Engeneering. Science once again back to 0. And finally we started to bombard Dongjing.

1210:
The storm began: I send all 3 cats and an additional samurai to hell but in the end we won the day:
Spoiler :

And look what we captured:
Spoiler :

1220:
Sury came to ask for this deal:
Spoiler :

I'd say no way...

1230:
And here we go for a funny demand:
Spoiler :

Seems he didn't get that he's next on the list...

1250:
This one was a way harder to decide:
Spoiler :

But in the end I went for no, as we still need the OB with Wang.

So I stopped here, as we're ready for the attack on Chengdo. But as he's got 2LBs, a musket as well as a crossbow inside charging right now would cost nearly the full stack. So we need to discuss whether we rather wait 3 more turns for the cats or start right now.. The stack is still unmoved!!

Looks good enough.

The smashout of the Chinese current cap will be hard with all those pro x-bows inside ( good thing that china has no more native iron ), but after that China is effectively doomed. After that we might even make a double take on the Khmer and Koreans.

Will say more after seeing the save in detail. Anyway nocho is up ;)
