The Deity Challenge Line-up #18 - Babylon OCC

Latecomer and first time DCL, thought I'd jump in on one that seemed quite easy and went for the SV. Got it on turn 268. Could have shaved some turns off but I'm really happy with how most of the game went.
Spoiler :
Managed to snag a bunch of early game wonders (ToA, HG, Parthenon, Oracle, CI and Hagia Sophia), then got the normal SV ones (PT, Pisa and Hubble). My continent were all BFFs until the last 25 turns or so when America and Germany denounced me (hence all of the mech infantry upgraded from foreign legions). My diplo game wasn't good enough to stop Oda and Shaka dividing the world on their warmongering, but I had the final 4 RAs signed before that was an issue anyway. I've never been able to wonder whore on Deity so easily before, only one I tried that I got beaten to was Angkor Wat and that was just for the giggles.

Spoiler :
I played this one first, but didn't post it right away and I've mostly forgotten the game. But I'm on the spreadsheet now, so I thought I would add this finish to the total.

I settled on the coast for the sea trade routes and went for a culture victory with the solid dirt. I managed to stay friends with both America and Germany almost the whole game, and they both still liked me even when they would occasionally war with each other. Ideological differences weren't an issue either. I built one worker early to chop in the ToA. I stole a second worker from the CS to the North, and that was all I needed to win the game. I built one road tile to get an early land trade route going, and left my second worker on the nearby island for a long time to prevent anyone from settling there.

I added a bunch of Wonders, and built more archeologists than I had slots. Unfortunately, I didn't get a single landmark in my territory. On the upside, there were 4 digs in my 4th and 5th rings and I was able to theme my museum with artifacts. I planted 4 academies to get my base science up, and went into Patronage for CS science. I actually timed 4 GS bulbs perfectly to grab the Internet ASAP.

I went Tradition, Rationalism +3, Patronage +2, Aesthetics, Freedom 8, Navigation (+2 late for giggles).

The AI had some impressive culture built up, so the game took a while to finish. I would have won on turn 301 if I hadn't forgotten about Assyria. I had the culture leaders beat with a turn 300 GM bomb fest, but I didn't get open borders with him until late and he ended up being the last to fall in line.

Late game I had some historical fun and built ring forts around Babylon. I filled them with infantry and felt positively safe.

Apparently I attached my tourism shot to the Polynesia thread, but it shows 53811 culture for Germany.

Pretty fun :) Jeebus I built a ton of wonders. My only goof was going right side of rati before Scientific Revoluation missing out on another 50% boost from RAs for a long time. That was really stupid because I had 4 RAs most of the game. I just didn't expect such a friendly game with Bismark and Amurica as my neighbors because in past games that is usually a recipe for disaster. But we made quite the trio of friends in this game!

So many policies with all that culture and Cristo Redentor. Full tradition + full rati + 4pat(scholasticism) + 3 commerce + 7 freedom

Victory

I started a CV variant of this map ages ago, I hope I still have the save in my folder, it will be the first time I ever tripled on a same map :)

Spoiler :
Planted near the mountain.

After Writing, I got Masonry for improving stone, and Bronze Working for the Iron (that really payed off). Then beelined Philosophy, Civil Service and Education.

I got the Salt/Gold/Iron pantheon so I managed to get a decent religion: tithe, 15% growth while not at war, and when enhancing I got the extra 50% pressure and 1% extra production bonus for each citizen. I even managed to get Borobudur before enhancing and spread my religion to the entire continent. Eventually the Americans got their religion and spread it to their cities but by that time I was already in a friends triangle with Germany and America, which lasted until ~T300 when the Germans denounced me (but did not DOW), even with different ideologies.

I occasionally DOWed some overseas nation when the Americans or Germans proposed but I never actually engaged in any combat (except early game when stealing workers from Germany).

I did the Oracle before NC because I did not know when that usually goes and I really wanted it for the extra GS point. Wonder wise, I also managed to get: HG, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Porcelain Tower, Eiffel Tower (with a GE from LToP), Broadway, Statue of Liberty (with faith bought GE), Big Ben, Cristo Redentor, Hubble Space Program and Great Firewall (just so no one else will get it).

The entire game I was swimming in gold, I ended up having 15k before buying the space parts. It was quite easy with selling salt, horses, dies, iron and eventually the marble. I always had the money to buy the science buildings the turn I researched them. Also did a lot of RAs with America, Germany and eventually Assyria. Only one of them was without the Porcelain Tower, I managed to get PT 2 turns before my second RA expired. I also bought most of the buildings.

I only planted 3 academies: on one of the horse tiles, on one of the stone tiles, and on a non-river grassland tile. Looking at the results here, I could have planted more, but I felt like I was wasting Scientists.

Policy wise I went: full Tradition, then opened Commerce, Mercenary Army, opened Rationalism, Secularism, Freedom Lvl2 (New Deal - I already got the half food for specialists and 25% GP points for free), Humanism, Free Thought, Mercantilism. The rest I put in Freedom, and Commerce. At some point I finished rationalism and got Nanotechnology for free.

I timed Cristo Redentor with a Golden Age and bulbed my entire GW carpet (I did not manage to win World's Fair but got a free social policy out of it).

I did some mistakes:
- I did not manage the WLTK system until late game, and also ignored CSs almost the entire game, so growth was a little slower.
- After education I beelined Printing Press but I should have gone for Astronomy first. I did not use the GE from LToP for something useful, I could have gotten a GS instead.
-I did too many wonders, some of them were completely useless (Eiffel Tower and Broadway for example)
-Late game I proposed lost the International Space station program but did not manage to to 850 hammers in order to get the free gs (that would have shaved 8 turns) because I did not switch to production focus during the 4 turns of working on it. I missed by 150 hammers, and I think it might have been possible to get it.
- I should have used great writers earlier to get 4 SP's in rationalism faster, I ended up getting a lot of SP that were not that useful. I did not need the entire commerce tree, and I also got some happiness policies from freedom that were useless. In the end game I even put 2 policies in Aesthetics.

I probably did a lot more mistakes without realizing, but this was my first Deity game that is not part of a scenario, or duel map, so I am satisfied. I will try for o proper one next.

Hey Claudiupb, nice win! Do you have a screenshot of victory? :)

Unfortunately I did not make a save at the end. My last save is at T256, and the auto saves were lost because I started another game.
Spoiler :
Here is a screenshot at T256, 5 turns before I burned all but one of the great writers.

OK well it's only really a formality, but as the person who keeps the spreadsheet updated, I like to see screenshots of the victory turn. There is no problem in this case. I'll add the result, and hope you'll stick around and play some of the other challenges. :)

Ok, next time I will make a screenshot on the victory turn. I will try some other DCL, but I will pick the easy ones first, as I'm not really that comfortable with Deity.

@Claudiupb - If you have extra policies in an OCC game, getting city-state science from Patronage really helps. It doesn't help bulbs, but it can really help chew through the tech tree.

I didn't realize that until too late, maybe going for city-state science can be done right after Tradition, and get a significant science boost form CS allies. Commerce can wait, as it gives you very few beakers in OCC, plus you only need the rush-buying discount in late game.

This was my first BNW OCC, and first time playing Babylon on BNW, though I played them a bunch on civ v vanilla. I was incredibly lazy: after exploring my continent, I deleted my scout and made no effort to explore the world. I eventually clued in on some (other) mistakes, the biggest was that I should have gone into Patronage (science policy) after Tradition instead of Commerce. However, this was the first science game in a while in which I actually used RAs - 2 for much of the game.
Not a mistake, as I bought all possible production buildings and gave it 100% effort, but I failed to get International Space Station.
I would like to try this again going for DomV. I don't know if a bowman rush is worth attempting (any thoughts?). I'm thinking Tradition/Patronage, might try for Holy Warriors.

Spoiler :

Just for fun, I tried a Liberty game. It wasn't very fun :(
I'm working through a Tradition, domination game now which is much more fun :) However, being a continents (or OCC, take your pick) noob, I started exactly as I did in my science victory, moving away from the coast...so, no ships.

Had a good start with ToA and HG by T50. VC was slower than expected. I might go back an replay from my HG save to see what I messed up.

Diplomatic Victory on T250.
Spoiler :

Played this game in two parts (1 month gap); originally thought OCC would be interesting but turned into next turn clicking after a while. Came back to finish it just to complete a Diplo vic for once.

City settled next to mountain, beeline to writing. trapped Germany third settler in my borders for 30ish turns when i saw him walking past.

Oracle to complete tradition, Hagia Sophia Prophet used to convert Germany to my religion (DOF after that). Rein thru banking and FP built. Oxford Radio for order (read a thread where order's free GS is supposedly better for diplo). Passed WI as order (before any other AI chose ideo)

Friends with america, germany, assyria for whole game i think. signed RA with all (later Inca as well).

barely managed to go atomic before a WC vote; bulb to ecology, rat final for telecomm, faith GS for Globalisation. Wl vote with all except 2 CS (one stolen by Inca, other eaten by Assyria).

Social Policy: Full trad, Patron (to scholar), Full Rat, 7 Order (to spaceflight)

Wonders: Oracle, Hagia Sophia, FP, PT, Eiffel Tower, Christo, Kremlin

WC: WF (settled for free policy), WI (order), +3 to wonders (proposed and then voted against)

Religion: Mother Earth, Tithe, Mosques, Swords, RT.

T276 SV
Managed to get ToA for growth, missed HG, Oracle, LToP to a wonder spamming ai civ so my win time is not that great compared to others. Both my Pantheon and follower belief was growth related. Used HS to get religion since I don't have faith generating pantheon. Grabbed divine inspiration for +science for enhancer. The +science was not very significant since the ai religion is weak on my continent and I spend too much time trying to spread religion to get science bonus.
No problem getting late game wonders such as BB, HST, SoL, Christ Redemtor since I was way ahead on tech. Stayed friends with both neighbors until I backstabbed at the end when one of them was getting wiped out to keep the other friends for the loans to buy part.

Could definitely win DV at least 20 turns earlier since the science at the end was the real limiting factor. None of the bulbs was enough for 1 tech in information era since apparently they don't count the science contribution from CS. Allied all CS easily with all the gold and rank 3 spies. Another mistake was waiting too long to buy parts, I forgot that only 1 part can be bought at a time. Also used 3 faith bought GS at the end. Planted only 3 academies, but I am not sure of the math of planting more vs not. I have a feeling ones planting after ST aren't worth much vs bulbs anyway.

WC was mainly used for diplo modifiers. Impossible to win WF so just had enough for free policy.
Policies at the end was full trad, 4 patronage, full rationalism, 4 commerce, 8 freedom.
