You heard me.
So... where does this leave us multiplayer fans? Literally just got a new computer after a year of too little horsepower for Civ 4
Edit: They have commented and the news is good, also for Civ III players
quite disappointing and unsatisfactory. From the nutjobs to the inconsistent servers, it was rather lacking. Much better to play with friends or join some of the MP groups like Civplayers and Reams Beyond to find games.
And this is exactly why I will never by a game that requires Steam. Well this but also the fact that it's basically DRM by another name. Here's to all the people who think STEAM will be around forever and never shut down...

As far as I can tell it isn't even 'by another name'...it's DRM.

I'm going to hold my tongue aside from this, but Steam offers incredible sales, convenience, ease of use. Picking up EU4 for $20 dollars from the comfort of my home? Yes, please.
But this is about GameSpy servers shutting down, which of course could never happen to Steam. And if it ever did VALVe has promised that in the midst of going out of business they will take the time to make sure that each and every Steam user gets a patched version of each and every one of their games.
And also they promised that all the games they had on their servers will be moved to other servers - so that people can reinstall and fully patch all their dowloaded games whenever they move to new hardware. Come on, people, seriously - how naive can you be??? As soon as STEAM (or any other online distributin platform) folds, loses necessary licenses or even loses commercial interest in keeping older games online (because it actually costs them money to do so) those games will be dead, gone and lost forever. It's inevitable and will happen sooner or later. The only question is: when?
Great post btw., really enjoyed reading it.
Physical media on the other hand certainly do get outdated. I have no way to install my copy of Civilization 1 simply because I no longer have a floppy drive. And even if I did, there's a good chance one of the disks is corrupt.
