Just played my first game as france (ever), on immortal, a difficulty i recently graduated to with mixed success.
cliffnotes:
~standard tradition 4 cities start, playing defensive.
~once unis are up and running, beeline to artillary and gunpowder
~from here, go warmongering and puppet cities with trading posts
i can say they are an absolute beast! with a standard 4 cities tradition opener, they are a cultural powerhouse early. this enables you to get through tradition and finish rationalism easily well before the end of the game (something that is rather hard with other nations
i ended up with massive science, after the initial defensive minded start getting workshops and unis up asap, i pushed to scientific theory and then artillary. this allowed me to puppet my neighbour with relative ease (by this stage i had him out-teched), and from here my economy and beakers blossomed with the help of rationalism getting finished fast because of the +2 culture (its a bigger help than it appears)
the UU also are great, musketeer is a bit meh, but when you upgrade to foreign legion they are a powerhouse at taking enemy cities with artillary. you just have to make sure you have a decent amount of legion before they become obsolete (which is rather early.
by the end game, i was getting 700 GPT and with my vast expanse of land had 12 uranium. i was buying nuclear missiles every couple of turns, and in 1 turn used 6 on america (the next dominant force on the pangea map). some of his cities were destroyed and i took the ruined capital without a fight. this was around 1700AD.
moral of the story is dont sleep on france!!!
