Raliuven SG2 Demi-God Aztecs

We are really isolated. I'm trying to decide whether that is good or bad. I guess we'll build nothing but settlers, workers, and jags for a long time.

I was thinking the same thing - where is everyone? I'm trying to decide if the Greek have any contacts. They got the 1st tier techs and 134gp. I suppose they could have done that by GH?

Since Tenochtitlan is going to be building a lot of jags, I'd like to fit in a barracks sometime soon. Demigod barbs don't give promotions so well. I also think we need an archer or two for local protection, so as to avoid situations like turn 4 as much as possible.

Agree on Ten. Teo is hurting without improved tiles. I should have pushed out one more worker before the granary build - we need those BG mined. I'm actually rather impressed by the number of BG in this area. That's been very nice.

Got it, will play tonight.

Okay barracks, jags, settlers, workers. I think I'll go for a spot on the northern coast for our next city. Get a boat or two out and go exploring. Barbs are annoying, that is one bad thing about no AIs close, they don't clean them up for you.

It will be really annoying if we are stuck with just the greeks on our island until astronomy or navigation, trading will be minimal. They also have nice cheap hoplites, making them a real pain to conquer.

Turn Log:
Spoiler :
Turn 0, 1750BC; A few unmoved scouts, move them, crap i find a bunch of barbs. Hit enter.

IBT; one scout jag dies to horse.

Turn 1, 1725BC; Tenoch jag-->settler. Crap! lose another jag scout to barbs. Sorry guys.

IBT; geez, barb horsemen appear at two cities.

Turn 2, 1700 BC; Lose warrior attacking horse. We are bleeding units guys. Can we have no barbs next time? Workers to BG by factory.

IBT; Another horse moves in.

Turn 3, 1675BC; Tlatelolco warrior--> barracks. Kill horse, finally some luck. Worker towards ivory, have to hire an entertainer (slider does nothing at factory) and up the slider.

IBT; Greeks building colossus.

Turn 4, 1650BC; I see greek border to the north! Finally.

IBT; elite greek warrior appears from fog, prolly killing some barbs for us.

Turn 5, 1625BC; Tenoch settler-->warrior. Settler goes north. Find sparta.

IBT; nada

Turn 7, 1600BC; not a lot, find some more of Greece.

IBT; some barbs,

Turn 8, 1575BC; Tenoch warrior-->warrior, need to replenish lost garrisons. Worker to ivory.

IBT; greek kills barb.

Turn 9, 1550BC; retreat to barb camp, greeks wil get it :(. Found texcoco by northern Ivory, warrior.

IBT; barbs moving,

Turn 10, 1525BC; Tenoch warrior-->settler. run my scout past some barbs, the greeks can kill them. Writing in 5.

It was a little hairy at the beginning with barbs, but it petered out. The granary at the factory is almost up, we almost have ivory a well. Keep up the worker, warrior settler theme going. We want a fair empire before the switch to republic.

The barb problem will fade as we fill the land. I always default to turning barbs on because they are used in the XOTM games. But next game we can play without barbs. It will feel a little weird, though. :crazyeye:

I can't believe the amount of land we have. I somehow have an image of the other 6 civs crammed on a small island in the upper Northeast of the map. Not sure if that would be good or bad . . .

pre-turn: Look around. No changes. Strangely, we're on Turn 59 instead of Turn 60 of the game. Ah, creamcheese skipped "turn 6" in his log.

Tlatelolco: Rax > Warrior

1500 BC - lose a Jaguar to a conscript Barb :wallbash:
1475 BC - Ivory connected. Greece issues a boot order; we comply.
Teotihuacan: Granary > Worker
1450 BC - Meet France! They're up BW, Masonry, The Wheel, and CB. They have 4 gold, one tradable Incense, and 8 cities (including their capital). Suddenly I have empire envy.
It slows growth in Tlatelolco by an extra turn, but I can MM to get Writing in 1 turn

Writing > Philosophy
Tenoch: Settler > Jaguar
Texcoco: Warriors

1425 BC (Turn 4) - Lux slider to 0; re-MM cities. I'm sending the Settler to the coastal river hill W of Tlatelolco.

Pausing here for research discussion: We want Philosophy next, hoping for a Code of Laws trade on the IBT when we learn it, right? With Lit as the free tech if we can't trade?

As for Writing: Trade to Greece and France now, or wait a few turns in hopes of meeting another trading partner?

Sorry about that! :( I hope you don't mind an extra turn.

I am skeptical of being able to trade for code of laws. Do we think anyone has writing? you can always try for the real slingshot, research laws ourselves and the philo, but that is risky. stick on philo i guess and probably we will be stuck with lit.

I'm kind of skeptical about that, too. If we had 4-5 contacts, I wouldn't be worried, but I don't think Greece or France will have CoL in the 12 turns or so that Phil will take.

I'm not totally an expert on what the AI researches, but usually they go for writing late unless you trade it to them, we could just do CoL ourselves and hope for the best. That might pay off big if we can get an early republic. We might even manage a non-despotic golden age.

Having so few contacts makes this a difficult decision.
Option 1: Try to research CoL first. Don't trade writing if we do this. Upside: we could get the Republic for free. Downside: we are likely to get to philosophy too late.
Option 2: Try to trade for CoL. Trade writing and hope the AI go for CoL. We can delay philosophy until someone learns CoL if we like. Not as risky as option 1, but likely to lead to an uncomfortable situation where we agonize over whether to learn philosophy this turn or wait another turn in hopes of CoL.
Option 3: Go for philosophy fast and take literature for free. The payoff isn't as great, but we are much more likely to get it. Plus, if we do run into someone with CoL, we can always trade and hope for the republic.

I'm most comfortable with option 3. I'd rather get something than nothing, even if it isn't the best possible free tech. I'd hold off on trading writing - this reduces our chances of trading for CoL but increases our chances of making it to philosophy first. If someone shows up with CoL, I'll be happy, but I'd prefer not to delay philosophy in hopes that CoL will appear. However, I play pretty conservatively, and my comfort zone doesn't always include the best choice for the future. Whatever we do is fine with me.

I agree. I say we go for broke. Research Phil and keep exploring. Hope for the best on the trade and more contacts. If we trade writing immediately, it might give Greece or France a chance to do some good with those 8 cities.

I'll admit I'm also a little worried about the AI popping writing from a GH. What are the chances of that happening? They would get myst first, then IW or Writing? I don't recall.

Turn 4 continued -

Trades:
Greece will give Masonry, The Wheel, BW, and 27 gold for Writing.
France will offer the same deal, except she only has 6 gold.

I make the trade with France on the theory that we can get more gold from Greece.
Both AIs have IW and Math; I trade Writing for IW and 8 gold to Greece.

We really need more contacts.

We have horses near the capital, but no iron is visible.

Tlatelolco: Warriors

1400 BC (turn 5) -

Just a bit of exploring.

Tenoch: Jags
Teoti: Workers

1375 BC - moving units. France complains about our exploring Warrior.
Greeks are building ToA.
1350 BC - Switch Texcoco to Worker (we need it more than we need two citizens there).
Tenoch: Jag > Settler
Teoti: Worker > Curragh
1325 BC - Jag kills wandering Barb.
Yellow borders spotted near France.
Warrior notices Barb horseman. Shuffle units to cover Worker and lux to 10% to compensate. Cross fingers, and...
that horseman kills a vWarrior :(
Another horseman comes out of the fog and ambushes our Worker roading the Horses
Tlatelolco: Warrior > Jag
Texcoco: Worker > Curragh

1300 BC - lux to 0%. Jag kills Barb Horse. Phil in 6 turns.
Tlaxcala settled W of Tlatelolco. Making Warrior.
Meet Egypt. Amazingly, she lacks Writing!
Unfortunately, all we can get is CB for it -- Math is too dear for that trade, and she's dead broke.

IBT - Jaguar explorer is ambushed by two Barb Horsemen. The second kills him :(

1275 BC - Warrior kills Barb Horse threatening Tlatelolco.
vJag takes 25 gold from a Barb camp NE of the horses.
Change Tlatelolco to Archer

Tenoch riots  I stupidly forgot to check for those. Sorry, guys :wallbash:

1250 BC (Turn 11 of the set, Turn 70 in the game) -
Exploring Jaguar ends on a mountain and spots barbs. I hope he can survive the horse attack that's sure to come on the IBT.

Handing off... keep your fingers crossed for a CoL trade!

Boy, those jaguars don't go very far, do they? I thought they could retreat from battle! I guess we don't have that tech! I'm honestly more upset about the lost worker. Poor Bob, cut down in his prime.

Sorry for the frustrating turns and my sick obsession with barbs. :crazyeye:

Roster:

Raliuven (on deck)
creamcheese
Elephantium (just played)
CKS (Playing)

Boy, those jaguars don't go very far, do they? I thought they could retreat from battle!

Not from horsemen they cant. :( This is why I don't like these early UUs, they seems great but they aren't really. The only exception is the Enkidu, that 2 defense would be nice right now.

Well, on demigod we only have a 25% bonus vs barbs, jags are only 1/1/2, and jags can't retreat from horses, so we should expect to lose a lot. I thought that was what you wanted, Raliuven - a way to keep us from outstripping the AI early on. ;)

I've got the save.

Ah, I lost mine to a warrior. I didn't really think about the barb horses. Now that I think of it, barb horses never retreat either. Because of that I guess I never really thought of them as the typical 'fast mover'. I've never played an early fast moving civ, so I guess I never noticed.

Well, I did want to give the AI a fighting chance against us. Only seems fair. :p Of course if someone had told me that if there was a bright center to the universe we'd be on the peninsula that its furthest from, then I might have reconsidered the 'raging' part. :D

:lol::lol::lol:

Seriously though, we really are isolated aren't we? Some suicide boats may be necessary to get some more contacts. The other continent may be way ahead of us.

Well, raging barbs aren't so bad. You just make sure that all your settlers are escorted and that none of your border towns have units in them. When you're broke, all that pillaging costs you next to nothing.

Okay, I've played two turns. Nobody has code of laws yet, but Egypt and Greece have both started ToA, so they know polytheism. We can learn philosophy this turn. We could almost certainly trade for mysticism and polytheism and take monarchy as our free tech if we haven't been beaten to it by someone else. Should we:
1. Take monarchy and revolt. We'll need to revolt again later, but it will be about 50 turns before we can learn the Republic. It might be worth a second revolt.
2. Take monarchy and use it to trade for other stuff, assuming our neighbors learn some other stuff.
3. Take literature, start on CoL.

Also, what do we think about SoZ in Tlatelolco?
