My embarked missionary just killed an attacking Barbarian Galley while defending. I don't send missionaries, I send Monks.

Try getting the Reformation where they convert Barbarians by moving adjacent to them. It works vs land or sea. Its an automatic conversion. In my last game, found an isolated barb camp, set up a missionary just out of range. Every time a second unit spawned, it became mine. Farmed the camp for some free units. Used a few missionaries as scouts, took the free units, and gifted them to city states.

...that sounds awesome. I haven't played with reformations yet.
