Part I- The Rebels

[Alterran Colony in the Terran System; Monday, January 3rd, 2302]

Colonel Drake Morpheus stared wearily at Admiral Pentash. This meeting had been going on for hours and still nothing had been accomplished. The various PDE (People's Democracy off Earth) military commanders were all sitting around a small oak table in a very drab room in Lantash City. The cause of the meeting was the recent rumors of a possible revolution that were passing through the high levels of the PDE Forces stationed in Terra.

Tensions were high after the PDE had enforced strict regulations upon the people of Terra that severely limited their freedom. The goal of the meeting had been to decide upon a course of action to take regarding the recent threat of revolution, but not much actual decisions were being made. People were proposing one drastic, unrealistic idea after another:

"Oh why don't we simply find the ringleaders and execute them"

"thats the problem, we can't find them"

"Just have the ships in orbit blow up every abandoned where house in town, they must be in one of them"

"You're crazy

"Bring every citizen in for interrogation"

"that would take to long

"WOULD YOU PEOPLE PLEASE SHUT UP FOR ONE DAMN SECOND!!!" shouted Admiral Pentash at the top of his lungs

"This meeting was scheduled to solve the problem we have but we can't do that unless you blithering idiots stop proposing stupid plans and acutually come up with something practical, you uncivilized..."

The admirals insult was interrupted when an attendant rushed into room. His face was pale and anyone who looked into is eyes could see the terror upon his face.

"Sir," he stuttered, looking at the Admiral, "we're receiving a planetary distress call"

"We have enough problems now, let another task force handle it," he replied, confused at why his attendant was bothering him with such a simple matter. Planetary Distress calls seemed to happen weekly these days. It was always natural disaster this, or space pirates are attacking that. Most often it seamed that the various systems were competing for one another to see who could do the most wining. Terra prided itself at having never sent a planetary distress call in its nearly 150 year history, despite various harsh conditions and pirate raids.

"You don't understand sir," the aid went on.

"You see.. the distress call sir... it's from Earth"

The various faces of the PDE military commanders drained of color and attained a whiteness similar to that of the attendant. Earth, as far as they were concerned, was the center of the universe. Earth wouldn't send out a distress call unless it was something serious, something very, very serious.

"Put it on speakers," ordered Admiral Pentash.

There was a small beep click as the speakers turned on, then a hollow voice filled the room:

"We've detected an unknown energy emanating from Sol [the sun], EM pulses and solar flares are recking havoc on the planet... All nearby ships have lost power... Unable to identify... Massive radiation poisoning is eminent... All PDE ships return to Earth IMMEDIATELY!!! Mobilize your forces at sector 013..."
-The Transmition Abruptly cut off-

If Admiral Pentash was white before, he was now indescribably white and starting to turn various shades of purple.

"order... all ships... to return... to Earth" he managed to stammer

Colonel Morpheus had other plans, however. Concealed beneath the table was a transmitter he had secretly placed there. He knew that what he had just transmitted was the perfect opportunity.

"Inform the rebellion," he whispered into another transmitter concealed in his hair, "it's time to strike."

Across the city in, quite ironically, an abandoned where house, the leaders of the rebellion seemed to stop breathing for a second, as if they couldn't believe what they were hearing. Finally Admiral Draxis, the leader of the rebellion, spoke:
"Inform all units to execute their orders, tell them... the rebellion has begun"
The Room suddenly came alive in a flurry of activity. Dozens of commanders that had defected began shouting orders into transmitters. Across Terra multiple sleeper cells of rebels suddenly received orders. They began executing their orders swiftly and efficiently as planned, the revolution had truly now begun.

Colonel Morpheus knew it was only a matter of time. Sure enough several minutes later, a banging sound echoed across the room. The military commanders were shocked out of the trance they seemed to have fallen into. The security guards tensed, their hands rested on their sidearms.

Without warning the door exploded inward, dust and debris rained across the room. Colonel Morpheus threw himself to the floor in a prone position as he had rehearsed. Blasts flew through the open doorway and struck the guards in their chests. The guards immediately collapsed to the ground.

Five men entered the room. Commander Aaren, their leader aimed his Pulse Rifle at Admiral Pentash. Admiral Pentash managed to stutter out:
"What is the meaning of this"
"You are no longer in control here admiral," Aaren replied and he fired his weapon at the admiral.

Admiral Pentash was thrown against the wall by the force of the weapon. He stared down at his chest as if he couldn't believe the gaping hole there. The admiral was dead within seconds, which was fortunate as he felt no pain. The five men with rifles then aimed their rifles at the other military commanders. A strange look of calm spread over their faces, as if they had accepted their deaths and and no longer wished to live.

Within seconds all the military commanders were dead, with the accepstion of Colonel Morpheus and five other officers who had pledged their allegiance to the rebellion. Commander Aaren spoke into the transmitter that was present on his face: "Stage one complete"

Meanwhile on the bridge of the Volshen, one of the two ships tasked with defending the planet, Captain Maxwell was sitting in his chair contemplating his new tasking orders

Return to Earth and assist the PDE fleet in any way possible

He was just about to send a reply to the Admiral when his First officer, Commander Rellin, spoke, Captain theirs someone here to see you. The Captain glanced up surprised at the six men standing at the entrance to the bridge.

"What do you want?" he said.
The men looked at each other and simultaneously drew their weapons
Captain Maxwell turned to his first officer
"Apprehend these me..." he stopped staring, in denial almost, at the pulse gun his first officer was pointing at his chest.
"So it's mutiny then" he stated
"Not mutiny, revolution" he replied

Within seconds the bridge crew was unconscious, unlike with the military commanders however, the attackers of the bridge crew were kind enough to set their weapons to stun. After the crew had been tied up the six attackers took their places at the bridge station while Rellin took the captains chair.

He spoke: "Bring the weapons systems online"
Their was a small hum as his small team complied
"Target PDE headquarters on the planet's surface and fire!"
The hum got louder as the weapons charged up, then the ship seemed to release its pent up anger and unleashed a volley of weapons fre at the planet's surface.

Down on the planet, citizens watched in awe as weapons fire obliterated PDE headquarters, the building they all hated, the building they had threatened to destroy themselves, now lay in a smoldering ruin, and back on board the Volshen, Rellin spoke into the transmitter concealed within his hair:
"Stage two, complete"

Within three days reports came in to Admiral Draxis. The revolution had been a success. Terra was now a free planet. There were reports of people celebrating in the streets. Draxis grimaced, he hated being the bearer of bad news.

An uproar could be heard from miles around as Supreme Admiral Draxis walked up onto the stage and approached the microphone transmitter stationed on the podium. If the crowd was worried by the tired look on his face or the weary circles around his eyes they didn't show it. After all, ha this man not just won them their freedom, didn't he have the right to be tired after that.

The crowd fell silent when Draxis took the mike. He began to speak
"People of Terra, we have won a great victory today.
Cheers and applause filled the air, Draxis raised his hand for silence.
"Unfortunately are victory came only in the wake of a tragic event."
Draxis paused as if wondering whether it would be safe to continue.
"We have lost all contact with Earth."
A hush fell over the crowd
"Right before the revolution we received a distress call, no one has heard from them since..."
The crowd remained deathly silent
"...no one has responded to our communications and the scheduled supply ships have not arrived"
"We can only hope that one day we will learn what has befallen them, but today we must look to the future with hope, for today we have won our freedom, today is the end of the PDE and the start of the Alterran Imperium"

Despite what Draxis had previously uttered the crowd continued into an uproar as he walked off the stage. The celebrations continued long after that. Earth had fallen, and Alterra had risen, all within three days.

Part II: The Systems
February 3rd, 2302

Grand Admiral Draxis looked across the fold of space to the glimmering hulls of the ships in orbit. The two captured planetary defense ships had been renamed after their capture a month earlier. The two ships, Discovery & Basilisk, had since been refitted for a scouting expedition. Moments earlier Draxis had given his speech to the crews preparing them for their journey although in truth Draxis was hesitant to send them. What if the destruction of Earth had not been an accident. Anything powerful enough to destroy Earth could easily destroy their defenses.

Captain Rellin spoke to his first officer:
"Time to go lieutenant, take us out.

As he watched the ship sail away Draxis wondered if he had made the right decision.

Several months later, the ships reported good news:

"we've located a system sir"

"Can the planets support life?"

"With some minor terraforming"

"Good, I'll relay this news back to G.A. Draxis"

Part 2: Continued

The Discovery cruised by the star as Captain Rellin stared out into the vastness of space.

"Where are we?"

"According to navigational computers: the star SM-1937" said his navigator

"Stupid PDE designations," muttered Rellin.
"Rename the system Lineus"
"Lineus sir?"
"It was my grandfathers name, he stated simply"

Soon they had left the star behind, but not before a small ship, carefully concealed behind the sun, followed them in secret.

Civ4ScreenShot0043.JPG

A small ship appeared on sensors.

"Is that a vessel" asked Rellin

"It was once a vessel," stated his first officer, it's not much of one now.

The Discovery cruised slowly through the wreckage of the ship.

Prepare a boarding party, lets see what's there, said Rellin.

Soon a large congregation of specialists, wearing extremely bulky suits, walked on board the wreckage.

"Sir, stated one of the technicians," "we've located what appears to be a computer core.

"Activate it" newly appointed first officer Charles stated simply.

As the lights on the device blinked on the technician managed to locate the last few pieces of communication.

To all PDE ships, this is the PDE transport Rushmore, mercenary pirates are attacking us. Our weapons are ineffective... send help ime...

-the distress call ended there, presumably because of weapons fire.

"Those poor souls" stated the technician... "sir I've found what's left of their memory. All I could find was their star charts, they've revealed the location of another star system".

"Very well" Charles said.

We'll have a memorial service to this crew later, right no I need you to upload those charts.

"Aye sir"

The destroyer that had been following them slid quietly behind one of the pieces of wreckage.

"The trap is set," the captain said.

-Later

Sir asteroids rich in hydrogen have been found was part of the report sent to G.A. Draxis on the explorations. The crew of the lost ships were vaporized and a memorial service was held.

The next 2 techs discovered were orbital engineering and synthetic composites.

Padesha Draxis stood on the bridge of the Recluse, the new scout commissioned. It had better sensor and scientific capabilites than the reconfigured planetary defense ship.

"And so it too, goes" he stated.

-October 3rd, 2303

Captain Rellin stood looking at the wreckage, praising his good fortune. G.A. Draxis was becoming anxious for any progress other then how many worthless kilometers of space they had charted. This wreckage could provide the progress he was waiting for.

He ordered the ship to move deeper into the wreckage and locate the computer core. Meanwhile the pirate destroyer signaled its comrade waiting among the wreckage. Together both ships advanced on the oblivious scouts.
