Ideas on How to add Religion to Civ 3

Of course the AI doesn't like them... So you may have to protect them with regular units... but the AI doesn't like you to wander in his realm with armed forces...
But they are also very useful to convert the ennemy units inside your territory. Aren't you tired of seeing the AI send escorted settlers to settle right in the middle of your kingdom? Well, just convert them before they finish crossing!

In fact, it's hard to use the monks agressively, as they are hunted by the AI, but they are efficient to defend against "peaceful invasion"

These are all valid points especially considering that hidden nationality and stealth don't work against the AI.

I just want to gather ideas on how we can add religion in Civ 3
Right now, thanks to everyone who has posted here, I have thought about having in my own mod:
Civ specific Religious techs to allow the building of religious churches that will spawn monks, that can convert other units.
And I will also have a tech "Crusade" which will allow the civs to build crusader units, if they have religious resources.

But, Im still open to more ideas.

Alrighty, one question then why civ-specific religious techs? While this is more historical in a scenario yes, in an epic game its very limiting.

That depends upon how you implement them into an epic game. CCM for instance allow the ability to choose which religion you plan to go for and if you conquor another civ with a different religion the ability to have more than one religion.

How exactly does that work? I'm going to presume 'religious small wonders' or something along those lines?

If it was a small wonder then every civilization could build all the religions ;) However what I am trying to point out is that there are many different ways to do things using the editor.

D'oh! I don't know what I was typing/thinking - obviously religious great wonders is what I had meant :shifty:

No problem, I'm just glad that shiro is making these units because they can be very usefull and having a variety of different ones gives the most oppurtunity for modding.

Here is the explanation of the religious concept in CCM:

The AI goes after hidden nationality units as if it has a blood beef with them. Even more so than it considers going after barbarian units. So what about Barbarians with HN? Will the AI go into a frenzied craze? Tom

In the CCM prebetatests these hidden religious units are used and tested now for a very long time. These units not only are HN, but they are also invisible landunits. The AI doesn´t go into a "frenzied craze" with them. :)

And here some of the religious units of CCM are explained:

As unit graphics CCM mostly uses king unit or leader unit graphics. Shiro, your new unit graphics are very nice. :) About the attack animation: Let them point at the attacked unit (with the hand or a symbol like a cross or something like that). The religious symbol for the attack is a good idea.

Shiro I see you added even more I am flabergasted great work! Civinator I did not want to give ll your secrets away just a simple explanation that other things are possible ;)

Shiro on the attack that is the hardest part with religious units but I think you are doing a great job. I am not familiar with Shinto maybe there are some things they do in prayer that you could use also.

Nothing against Plot - his work is fantastic and always appreciated, but personally I actually liked the monks prior to the new attack. I'd always imagined religious units as converting other civs units to my side via indoctrination; ie, religion. Not shooting magical balls at the opponent (which has a very Tim feeling to it).

Will the final units have both flics available to use?
