Yeah, on the lower levels speed really matters, the AI is so extremely weak in the early game. As an example for your settings, prince/epic, there was a conquest game in last HoF challenge series that was to be played with Ragnar on prince/epic speed, one city challenge, always war and standard sized archipelago map. Obviously the idea with that challenge was to turn it into a tough battle where you have to fight larger opponents from your single city. As it turned out, you could win the game by building a Trading Post for faster galleys, then send out 4-5 galleys with one axe each to find the AI and take them all out before anyone reached archery...
