(Next War) From Sea To Shining Sea

Is this dead?

Aye, I think so.

Sorry, everyone! School completely took over. But now that's done with, so I hope to be able to finish this LP within the next few weeks!

Spoiler :

On September 6, 1933, American troops occupied the Persian capital of Persepolis.

I’ve captured Persepolis.

Spoiler :

I can see that Dallas is going to be the first flash point of the war. I reinforce Natascha with as many infantry as I can. If the Aztecs want Dallas, they will pay dearly for it.

Spoiler :

Given the Aztec threat, the American government elected to offer Persia a peace treaty. The Persians surrendered, becoming an American vassal state. As a sign of American generosity, Persepolis was returned to Persian control.

I end the Persian war with a victory. I give them back Persepolis, as I never really wanted it anyway. I send the Borealis to pick up the troops from Persia, while the tanks go to take back Harappan.

Spoiler :

One of the bloodiest battles in recorded history, the First Battle of Dallas was fought over a week from March 3 to 8, 1934. It saw the Aztec war machine throw its full strength up against a hastily-assembled American army. Bows, pikes, and catapults clashed with rifles and tank-mounted cannon.

But when the smoke cleared, the Americans were victorious. Their casualties were heavy – the Natascha tank unit had been destroyed, along with untold numbers of infantry – but they had won. And the Aztecs had suffered far greater casualties.

Wow. That was big. And I won! Yay!

Spoiler :

Mass media, or any media that reaches a large number of people, has a major impact on our society. In the United States, most media outlets are privately owned, save the few that explicitly belong to the government. During the early days of the Second North American War, images broadcast from the frontlines, combined with speeches by American leaders, helped bring about a patriotic fervor in the American populace. This wasn’t a war fought in a faraway land – this was a war being fought in America.

I have developed Mass Media. I can build the Hollywood wonder, broadcast towers (though I don’t need to with the Eiffel Tower), and the Civilized Jewelers corporation. Next up: Fission. It’s time to go nuclear on their asses.

Spoiler :

The Aztecs launched a second assault on Dallas in the fall of 1933. It failed to inflict serious casualties. It became clear that whatever momentum the Aztecs had perished in their first assault on Dallas.

Spoiler :

Another mission. I’ll see about this one.

Spoiler :

American Navy SEALs are quite possibly the most elite troops ever trained on the face of the Earth. Those who make it through the grueling training regimen are equipped with the finest weapons and equipment money can buy, technology that sometimes seems like magic to less advanced nations. SEALs are mostly used for wetwork and covert operations.

I’ve trained my first Navy SEALs. I name this unit SEAL Team Six, in tribute to the unit that killed Osama bin Laden.

Spoiler :

In the 1920s, the American music scene was swept by a new sound – rock n’ roll. Led by performers like Elvis Presley, rock n’ roll became the most popular genre of music in America. It took advantage of new technologies like radio and television to reach a wider audience. Rock n’ roll spawned many offshoots genres, such as pop rock, rap, hip-hop, and of course, metal.

In 1935, the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame opened in New Orleans, to commemorate the great rock musicians.

The actual description for the Rock N’ Roll wonder describes Graceland, the Elvis Presley museum. I’ve changed that, obviously. To be honest, it would make far more sense to have modeled the wonder after the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.

Spoiler :

Teotihuacan was the first Aztec city to fall to the American military. The city was subsequently renamed Houston, and annexed into the United States proper. By now, it was clear that the tides of war had turned against the Aztecs.

Yep. This time I’m going on a campaign of conquest.

Spoiler :

Los Angeles, formerly Xochicalco, was captured in 1937 by Navy SEALs. The conquest went fairly well – Xochicalco had long been influenced by Seattle. Around the same time, Calixtahuaca was overrun, becoming Phoenix.

Two more cities have fallen.

Spoiler :

The first attack on the Aztec capital sent shockwaves throughout the empire. Land that had been undisputedly Aztec for millennia was now being overrun by American war machines. Where once the Aztecs had dreamed of bringing their northern neighbor to heel, now they wondered if their nation would survive the war at all.

I’ve begun the assault on Tenochtitlan.

Spoiler :

I’ve lost the tanks from the Persia operation – the Egyptians attacked them in southern Turkey.

Spoiler :

Spain got a nasty shock in March 1939 when the Big Bertha artillery unit opened up on Madrid. With William Clark in command, the Spanish homeland – indeed, their entire nation – was now in peril.

Spoiler :

The word “atom” means “indivisible”. And yet, on a Chicago squash court in 1939, American scientists split the atom for the first time, releasing huge quantities of energy. The scientific implications were enormous. However, as is inevitable for a scientific discovery, the first application of this new development was as a weapon – the nuclear bomb.

I have researched Fission. I can build the Manhattan Project, and then I can build nukes. I choose Rocketry next – the other thing I will need to build nuclear weapons.

Spoiler :

The Hammer captured the Aztec city of Tlacopan in the summer of 1939, depriving the Aztecs of a critical port city. The city was renamed La Paz.

I begin the final assault on Tenochtitlan…

Spoiler :
Spoiler :

On November 19, 1939, American infantry entered the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan. Few were surprised, but the humiliation of losing their capital dealt a further blow to Aztec morale. The very survival of their nation was now in doubt.

And I succeed! I rename the city to Mexico City. As you may have noticed, I am using modern Mexican city names for my captured Aztec cities south of the border.

Spoiler :

By 1940, war weariness had begun to settle on America. The American government offered a peace treaty with the Egyptians, who agreed.

To be honest, I’m kinda tired of that war.

Spoiler :

The effects of the Second North American War stretched well beyond the front lines. The USS Enterprise maintained a position off the Venezuelan coast, launching air raids on Aztec infrastructure. If the American people were starting to tire of war, the Aztecs must have been close to exhaustion.

The final Aztec cities in North America fell in early 1942. After this, the American government offered the Aztecs a peace treaty, which they accepted. The Second North American War came to a close, with the Aztec Empire stripped of half its territory. It was one of the longest and most brutal wars in recorded history.

The war is over. I begin the tedious work of withdrawing my troops back home.

Great update.

Also i am realy happy that you returned back to finish this great story.

subbed

Awesome! Good to see this back :)

Very good update, glad to see that this thread is not dead.

What is dead may never die, but rises again, harder, stronger!

Spoiler :

Japan has offered me a defensive pact. I accept.

Dammit!

Rockets have actually been around for centuries, having been first developed in the early 1600s. However, these early solid-fueled rockets had limited power and range. In 1944, MIT scientist Robert Goddard developed the first liquid-fueled rocket. Rockets soon became a mainstay of American weapons, from surface-to-air missiles to the mighty ICBMs that would deliver Armageddon anywhere on Earth.

I have developed Rocketry. Next up is Ecology.

Spoiler :

Ecology is the study of the environment as a whole, and usually refers to efforts to protect it. Americans had already made progress in protecting the environment, but usually in the context of it being a national treasure. It was only in the mid-20th century that they made the connection to preserving their own health.

And coming after that… Superconductors, for even MORE research power!

Spoiler :

The American film industry started as an offshoot of the Broadway theater scene in Seattle. However, theater owners there often looked down on film as an inferior medium. The filmmakers’ response was to move their operations to the Hollywood neighborhood in Melbourne. The nature of film opened new creative possibilities, and distribution was much easier. Melbourne is arguably the single most culturally powerful city in the world.

I have built Hollywood in Melbourne, completing the trifecta of media-related wonders.

Spoiler :

The Manhattan Project was a top-secret US government project to turn the power of nuclear fission into a weapon of mass destruction. In 1950, they detonated the first test bomb in the Australian desert. The nuclear genie had been uncorked, and the world would never be the same.

I can haz nooks?

Spoiler :

Superconductors are materials with no electrical resistance at all at low temperatures. They are used in a variety of advanced devices, as well as the core of our modern power grid.

I can now build Laboratories. Now you may say, “Meshakhad, we don’t have a superconducting power grid!” I answer, “we don’t, but the person writing this does.”

The next technology will be… Hydroponics.

Spoiler :

In 1954, Cheyenne native Charles Lindbergh became the first man to fly over the North Pole. Upon his return, it was proposed that a monument be built at the Cheyenne airport to commemorate his achievement. The winning design was submitted by Lindbergh himself, consisting of several statues of himself helpfully pointing the way to places like baggage claim.

Spoiler :

Lindbergh’s historic flight was pushed out of the news with the discovery of a primitive tribe of barbarians in the far north. The Canuck tribe was treated as a curiosity, not a threat. A special unit was dispatched to keep an eye on them.

I build a spy to watch over this primitive tribe. I also dip into the World Editor to change their name to Canuck.

Spoiler :

A Great Scientist has been born in New York. I know what I intend to do with him – found Aluminum Corp.

Spoiler :

Aluminum is a very valuable metal, primarily used in the aerospace industry. However, there are only two sources in the United States. In 1955, the metallurgist Ptolemy found a way to extract pure aluminum from common bauxite ore. His company, starting in Denver, soon spread throughout the nation, and became a major employer of scientists.

Aluminum Co allows you to obtain aluminum from coal. More importantly for me, it also gives you research.

Spoiler :

The Internet is a global network of computers that first came online in 1956. Originally intended to share information, the Internet has become something far more. It has revolutionized almost every aspect of our society, from television to business to communication to learning.

And, of course, porn.

I have THE INTERNET! I can know learn any technologies known to other civilizations, such as…

Spoiler :

Communism is an ideology wherein the means of production are owned by the society as a whole rather than individuals or corporations. All individuals contribute to the best of their abilities, and the fruits of their labors are distributed according to their needs.

Communism never got much of a following in the US, though the American Socialist Party has won a few local elections, which is more than the Fascists can say.

Spoiler :

Artillery refers to powerful ranged weapons that require a crew, such as cannons and missiles. America languished in artillery development, preferring to strike quickly with regular troops. It was only in the 1950s that the American artillery arsenal was upgraded with modern technology.

I can now build Intelligence Agencies, the Kremlin, Anti-Tank troops, and Mobile Artillery.

Spoiler :

I have built my first ICBM in Chicago.

Spoiler :

Hydroponics is the science of growing food in nutrient solutions rather than soil. This produces much greater yields for a given area. However, making use of hydroponics requires a great deal of technical know-how, and is only viable in an advanced and educated society. Hydroponics was first applied on a large scale in 1959 in the United States, in response to the ever-growing population.

Now we are entering territory that even veteran Civ players may find unfamiliar. Hydroponics is one of the technologies included in the Next War Epic mod that I am playing. It makes all your farm tiles produce an additional food, and allows you to build the Arcology structure, which gives a bonus to Health. That said, the Arcology also requires Composites.

My next technology will be Genetics. Which I missed the screenshot for, so:

The human genome was first sequenced in 1965, opening a new door on understanding our biology and treating diseases.

That’s a nice health bonus. Satellites next.

Spoiler :

On July 4, 1966, the city of Panama erupted in a violent revolt, calling for a return to Aztec rule. In response, the American government deployed troops to quell the uprising.

Crap.

Spoiler :

In July of 1969, the United States orbited the world’s first commercial satellite, Comsat I, opening the door to commercial activity in space (previously restricted to the American military and NASA).

Well, that gets me the Space Elevator, and now I can research Composites!

Spoiler :

Cyrus offers me dye for gold. As I have no dye of my own, I accept.

Spoiler :

The Centers for Disease Control was established in 1972 in Seattle. Its purpose is specifically to fight and control diseases that threaten public health.

Yay, the CDC is done! This is a National Wonder included in the Next War mod, although its effect is closer to that of a World Wonder, namely providing improved health and happiness to all cities.

Spoiler :

Composites have been used for centuries, dating back to the composite bows used by American soldiers in antiquity. But it was in the late 20th century that composites of metal and plastic became common, used for making everything from drill bits to the supports of the great arcology domes.

I have researched Composites, giving me access to Modern Armor and Arcologies. I’ll explain the latter in a bit. Now for Aquaculture.

Spoiler :

As America’s population grew, her scientists continued to search for new ways to optimize existing food resources. Aquaculture is the system of cultivating the produce of water for human consumption. The first attempts in this field were “fish farms” which allowed for far greater production than fishing in the wild did. Farmed fish, like their landlubber counterparts, could be kept in a controlled environment, and even be genetically engineered for greater yields.

Later, scientists turned to growing and harvesting aquatic plant life. Fortunately, the American populace had already gotten used to eating seaweed in the form of sushi, so it was easy for food production companies to sell them on other seaweed-based products. Seaweed wraps, in particular, sold very well. By 1978, seaweed was the second most commonly consumed vegetable in America after corn.

Aquaculture (another Next War-specific technology) gives you +2 Food production from all Fishing Boats. Next comes Robotics.

A quick primer on the Next War mod and how I’ll be using it in this LP. The Next War mod not only includes new units and technologies, but also gives them backstory, drawing on a future history narrative created by the mod designer. I’ll be treating this narrative like I’ve treated our own history – namely, as a source for references and patterns, nothing more.

Also, if you’re wondering, the quotes for the Next War technologies are read out, presumably by the designer.

You should have used the great scientist to try and convince people of Evolution/Global Warming/The World being round :D

What is dead may never die, but rises again, harder, stronger!
you referenced the drowned god from a song of ice and fire.

late sub much, lol

This is still alive??!!!!!!! OMG!!!!

Anyway, once again, you posted a great update.
