Glad to see a medium size map after the long game in GOTM7 (which I like every now and then).
However, isn't Warlord too easy?
Does anyone out there play on Warlord?
After the long sim citying of the previous game, a fight would have been nice.

IMHO, we should never have GOTM at < King level (and King only rarely). I think new players can learn enough from the forums to cope.

Maybe I'll get some more practice at micromanagement, but I might just go for a quick finish (although I doubt I'll beat Cactus Pete).

Hi everyone,

I've been lurking for a month I messed around with GOTM#7 but this time I'm going to follow the rules and see how it goes - although I'm totally outclassed by some of you guys.

No Noughmaster I disagree with that - I think that King should be the normal GotM, and then have some games on Prince and Emperor - and maybe the occasional Deity and Warlord game.

If you look at the old poll on about what level most people play at, then we need to have quite a few games on prince and King to get most people to play. Given there are a lot of members that might try a higher diff than they usually play, but they also easily get killed of before finishing the game. But still, it's more fun if we are more people that can participate in the game, and by lowering the level we get more players.

I think that it will be a fun month with - hopefully - a lot of players. My only reason for concern is that some of the good players might even start using food caravans to boost their score for better results!!!

I know my sis is happy with this level! She complaints sometimes that the level is too high. But she normally plays warelord or prince or something, so this shouldn't be a problem for her I think.
As for me.........let's score some GotM points by early finish!

Ok, ok, ok. I know that this is a stupid question, but I honestly don't know. How do you submit your GOTM? This will be my first GOTM, I'm a novice.

IMHO, anyone who resorts to the FCT (Food Caravan Trick) should simply have that game excluded. We don't want to go down that road . At the very least, we don't want to see cities ballon to sizes beyond their "natural" size (e.g., how large it would grow on it's own, given enough time).

That said, food caravans are OK when used as "intended": for example, to help cities keep from starving, even help little cities get started, replinish low food stores, etc. But if it is not already a "GOTM house rule", then it should be... no "super size" (larger than could grow naturally) cities & no FCT (at least to grow unnatural cites)!!

BTW, my biggest use (personally) for Food Caravans is for Wonder Building and Spaceship Building. In some games, I have used a handful (10 or 15) to keep cities that have grown naturally from starvation due to shifting engineers or moving citizens around.

At this point, I have personally not seen anyone use the FCT (in GOTMs 4 thru 6), though I know some players like me, Shadowdale, Smash, etc. (and probably most other GOTM-ers) know how to do so.

Glad to see a medium size map after the long game in GOTM7 (which I like every now and then). However, isn't Warlord too easy?

I don't think I ever played at warlord, ever. My first game was at Prince (after looking at the tutorial in the manual), then one at King, and all have been Deity ever since (except for these GOTMs).

However, we must remember the GOTM is for everyone to have a good time. As for me, maybe warlord will be "difficult" in the sense that I'm not used to how the game plays at that level. Strategies should be altered quite a bit, I suspect... esp. since happiness, growth, and wonder building (the race) should not be the overwhelming concern that it is at Deity.

Does anyone out there play on Warlord?

I'm sure some do, and in fact, maybe some lurkers (people that read but do not submit) are "intimdated" by the percieved difficulty level and some of the posts. Hope everyone remembers this GOTM is for fun and learning and developing new styles of play, etc.

IMHO, we should never have GOTM at < King level (and King only rarely). I think new players can learn enough from the forums to cope.

Personally, I think a variation in game play, land/water distribution, difficulty level, world age, starting position, etc. is a good thing.

Maybe I'll get some more practice at micromanagement, but I might just go for a quick finish (although I doubt I'll beat Cactus Pete).

Cactus Pete and Smash could conduct a "clinic" for most of us on the art of the quick kill .

YEA!! a game at my level!!! hehe, Yes, i play on Warlord but am moving up to prince soon, hopefully. I'm no expert yet so im not going to get a very high score, but i'll have fun trying! good luck, although i'll need it!

I have a question, is the civilization score related to the rating?

Well, amazingly, I've had Civ 2 since the day it came out (as well as Scenarios and FW). Just now though, Ive found this site and decided to try out GOTM 8 (why not?), and it brought me back to the wonderful old days of warlord. I managed 78%, although most of that came from the insane time I ended the game. Id like to know how everyone else did percentage wise, when theyre done.

I must apolize to everyone that restart civ is also on in this gotm. I should have customized the rules when setting up the game. Hopefully it doesn't take you too long to hunt down the Civs on this medium map.

We definiely won't have restart civ on in the next gotm and it will be on a higher difficutlty level...

When I downloaded gotm8.zip, and opened the file in Civ2, the cheat mode was enabled! Is this some bug or did everyone have this?
By the way, I turned cheat mode off, played the game and conquered the world in 180AD.

OK, I see your point.
It would be interesting to do a poll of all players and what level they usually play.
There are several key techniques eg. caravans for wonders, super science city, WLTP days which new players can learn from these forums and progress through the levels quickly.

I admit my overall wimpyness by telling you all that I am a mere cheiftain to be crushed by my enemies on higher levels. Having the game only for two weeks, I think I'm doing fairly well
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, fairly well, but when u first time conquer the world in chieftain,
do NOT stay in there long, switch to warlord
and that way to prince... If u stay
easier level too long u will take their tactics and it's impossible to play harder
levels... When I tried to play prince,
It taked 6 months of trying to get there...
PS: Yes, I am dumb too, how do u submit GOTM..?
