There have been few challenges lately so I am issuing this challenge on Emperor level so that a few more players can try it.

The challenge is simple, win the game with a population of over one billion people in your civ.

Settings:
civ: Your choice
difficulty: Emperor
map: continents
size/speed : standard
number of opponents: standard
DLC: any
huts: on

There is no starting save, you are free to try as many times as you like with as many civs as you like.

This challenge will run for 30 days and the person with the earliest finish over 1 billion will win.

Good luck!

I'm pretty sure the population calculation is not linear. Increasing a small city's pop by one is different from increasing a large city's pop by one. Who knows the formula?

I know this much; I think amnt of food needed to grow accounts for CiV-calculated pop. I may be wrong though.

Doing a little math in my head, it would take about 35 pop 40 cities to get to 1 billion pop!

well, my 30 pop and 15 pop cities amounted to 15million. decided to bail after that. 100 million might even be stretching it. like 5+ 30 pop cities.

If the math is right then it should be doable on emperor. Large (huge) map, conquer the world, leave one city for the last remaining civ (surround it by double circle of troops), grow.

India is the only option.

I recall hitting 1 billion once in G&K (no food trade routes!), and it took doing what Moriarte describes. Don't recall the civ (but it wasn't India). Vaguely interesting, in a "how does the game work" sort of way, but mostly "Next turn" drudgery for the last 150+ turns as I watched the pop meter slowly rise. Not much repeat fun value IMO.

I had a single 30 pop and it was 13 million and change. But it does go up exponentially. I would like to know the number for 40 and 50.

I think you have to go tall science until ideologies and then clear the map.

pretty sure that venice and conquering with galleas IS the way to go

obviously a civ like aztec with a good coastal start spot can do well too

and obviously u need 1! big city not 4 tall ones -
Venice might be able feed 2

I don't think anyone knows how many people are in a size 100. But I think you need one city as close to 100 as you can get backed up by 3 more 50s.

I'd say either the Dutch or Siam are also contenders. The Dutch on a dry map will have their amazing Polders going for them. Siam requires a bit of luck of the draw with plenty of Maritime City States to work.

my 30 pop city was aztecs with a decent sized lake. it wasnt optimal and the problem was there werent any other lakes for more cities to try with too. continents effectively shut down good multi-lake city spots. i also was outpacing my border growth way too fast once i got floating gardens. had 2 citizens sitting around since a few of my tiles were "dead" tiles from a couple mtns and some 1 food tiles on deserts. all my specialist slots were eventually worked for market/workshop/unis. stopped before getting any further.

i was pondering what could happen with Austria. if you do nothing but grow and save as much gold as possible you could maybe marry 2 or 3 late game CSs for an immediate 20+ pop infusion per CS. i dont know how tall an Emperor CSs can grow but by late 200s i'd think they should certainly be in the high 20s.

its an interesting sandbox idea to actually get to 1 billion. i dont really know the exponential stuff with pop so maybe an 80 pop city or something could actually do that but so many unworked citizen tiles seems so weird to me.

interesting. that told me a couple things, one was that my Austria idea is bunk. in t336 or whatever only one or 2 CSs had 20pop (unless they'd all been conquered at some point) so no, a huge marriage conquer game isnt a good way to do this. also, it told me i have no interest in getting to 1 billion, haha. conquering the whole map barely gets you to 200m.

with a little time (and i might try this later) you have 3 or 4 cities 1 turn from going up 1 pop and i could only level each one up to see what difference in pop based on whether it is 16 or 17 or 20 or whatever. dont have time today but i might revisit this. thanks for the save.
