what slows the game down?

on most games i play, towards the end industrial age/early modern age the game slows down alot in between turns. so is it the number of civs, cities, workers, units, map size, a combination of all? i dont wanna take away the entertainment of my games bt i stil want it to be faster. any help please?

It is mostly the fact that there are more cities, harbors, airports, and roads. The game takes a long time to calculate trade routes.

From my experience the route of your problem is the number of civilizations that you have. The more that you have the more things the computer most think about, and vice versa.
